Ensemble MidtVest

The music of Hans Abrahamsen (b. 1952), dark yet alluringly innocent, exhibits a pure, strong naïveté that opens up into a genuine magical world of both the bright and the sombre kind. Performing two of his early works – Six Piecesfor horn trio and his first string quartet 10 Preludes – Ensemble MidtVestbrings out Abrahamsen’s characteristic clear, precise tone. The same clarity inhabits his arrangements of Erik Satie’s Trois Gymnopédies and Carl Nielsen’s Fantasy Pieces, exploring and evoking the original works in a new, unmistakably Abrahamsen-esque way.

“Abrahamsen’s own String Quartet No.1 is atmospherically performed.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2017 ***

“Ensemble MidtVest’s 10 Preludes, Six Pieces offers a chance to explore chamber music from much earlier in his career. The disc includes his transcriptions of Satie (Gymnopédies) and Nielsen (Fantasy Pieces). They are a lot more beguiling — especially the Nielsen arrangements, where you have the feeling of intense Danes sharing their pain and passion across the decades.” The Times, 4th August 2017 ***

The Weeping White Room for piano and ensemble

Katrine Gislinge (piano), John Storgårds (conductor/violin)

Lapland Chamber Orchestra

Bent Sørensen’s piano concerto Mignon–part of his Papillonstrilogy –reveals textural beauty and melodic elegance in a language both modernist and sweetly nostalgic. The piece was written for Katrine Gislinge, one of the most significant pianists in Scandinavia, and on this premiere recording she is accompanied by Lapland Chamber Orchestra, conducted by John Storgårds. Storgårdseven performs Sørensen’s two pieces for solo violin, Serenissima and The Lady of Shalott. Also included are the premiere recordings of the ensemble pieces Ständchen and Sinful Songs.

“There is an almost unbearable, icy tenderness to [Mignon] (the excellent sleeve notes aptly describe Sorensen’s harmonies as ‘like smoke: forming suddenly only to disintegrate’) and the intricate score is performed with great clarity and beauty by pianist Katrine Gislinge and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra” BBC Music Magazine, March 2017 *****

Rasmussen, S: Symphony No. 2 'The Earth Anew'

Cyndia Sieden (soprano), Bo Skovhus (soprano)

Akademiska Sångföreningen, Muntra Musikanter, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, John Storgårds

The second symphony of the prize-winning Faroese composer Sunleif Rasmussen (b. 1961) is composed as a life cycle based on the Old Norse myth of the tree of life, Yggdrasil, and carries the title ‘The Earth Anew’. Inspired by natural phenomena and Faroese melodies, Rasmussen is a great believer in a shared Nordic identity, and this world premiere recording bears witness to his strong artistic partnership with Finnish conductor John Storgårds and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

“New music of a very, very high quality in a thrilling performance- and we have Storgards to thank for both.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2017

“The symphony’s unsentimental, gently optimistic close is marvellous. Highly recommended, abetted by full-throated singing from the Akademiska Sångföreningen and Muntra Musikanter choirs. Superb recording, too.” The Arts Desk

Bruun: The Green Groves

Bruun:

Perletåredråber (Pearls of Tears)

The Green Groves

The Black Waters

Big Bird and his Friends

Ensemble MidtVest

Even in its most expressive passages, the music of Peter Bruun (b. 1968) owns an innocence in tone that normally belongs to childhood; an innocence that is more common in folk music or pop songs, but one which Peter Bruun grafts on to chamber music by maintaining an intensity and energy of expression that few composers have at their disposal. This album presents four of Bruun’s most evocative chamber works in world premiere recordings by Danish Ensemble MidtVest.

Peter Bruun’s background is in the ‘rhythmic’ genres. In 1989 he began studying composition with Niels Marthinsen, and at the same time studied philosophy at the university. In 1991-1997 he trained as a composer and music teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in Århus. His composition teachers there were Karl Aage Rasmussen and Per Nørgård. Peter Bruun has mainly composed vocal music and works for small ensembles. He also teaches music theory at the Academy in Århus.

In 2008 Peter Bruun recieved the Nordic Council Music Prize for the successful opera MIKI Alone written for Figura Ensemble. Beforehand Peter Bruun has received the National Arts Foundation three-year grant (1996) and Wilhelm Hansen Composer Prize (2000).

Ole Buck: Sinfonietta Works

Ole Buck: Sinfonietta Works

Buck, O:

A Tree for 13 musicians

Fiori di ghiaccio for 9 instruments

Flower Ornament Music for 17 instruments

[Untitled] (2010) for 8 instruments

Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, Jesper Nordin

The music of Ole Buck (b. 1945) is simple and beauty-seeking, sophisticated and surprising on its own terms. In some works he will make do with as few as five notes, but the composer’s incomparable sense of timing ensures that the listener never feels the need for more. This album presents premiere recordings of four of Buck’s works, of which three are inspired by nature: Fiori di ghiaccio (‘Ice Flowers’), A Tree and Flower Ornament Music – all recorded by Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen and conductor Jesper Nordin.

Ole Buck is one of the best kept secrets in Danish contemporary music. He is unknown to the general public, esteemed by all who have heard his music. Ole Buck has developed his own “new simplicity” and has worked with repetitions of a small number of crystallized tones, which are dabbed through the music like brush-stokes in a Japanese drawing. With his pristine expressive idiom, many stylistic elements find a place in Buck’s music. His works are elaborated down to the smallest detail, with many exquisite, elegant features. On the surface the music may seem cool, but beneath this there are always narrative or playful elements. Ole Buck has composed several chamber works in succession as well as instrumental works for large ensembles, for example the four-seasons piece Landskaber (Landscapes).

“The Athelas Sinfonietta’s playing is suitably hypnotic, with beautiful solos and a sense of the music’s haze despite a close recording. Resonant and fascinating music from a composer who knows himself and his art” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2016

“Minimal minimalism of great interest and variety – one to explore.” Music Week, October 2016

Olesen: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Olesen: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Danish National Opera & Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Joachim Gustafsson

The staging of the Danish composer Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen’s opera The Picture of Dorian Gray (2013) is one of Den Jyske Opera’s (Danish National Opera) bravest ventures in recent years: a choreographed opera with no singers on stage – based on Oscar Wilde’s most controversial novel. Like Wilde’s novel, Agerfeldt Olesen’s opera balances between reality and dream or imagination. Consequently, both sounds from the world of yesterday and outbreaks of the musical genre are present in Agerfeldt Olesen’s score, though primarily expressing the composer’s own distinctive sound. The prizewinning Swedish choreographer Marie Brolin-Tani has conceived the choreography seen on the opera stage as a strong sensual interpretation of the actions and conflicts of the drama.

Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen trained as a cellist and composer at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Århus, studying composition with Poul Ruders, Karl Aage Rasmussen, Olav Anton Thommesen, Henryk Gorecki in Poland and Bent Sørensen.

In recent years Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen has become a particularly sought-after composer, and he works with many prominent Danish and foreign ensembles including WDR Radiosinfonieorchester Stuttgart, the Århus Symphony Orchestra, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, the Danish National Opera, Quartetto di Cremona, Henschel Quartet, Pellegrini Quartet, the European Union Chamber Orchestra, Århus Sinfonietta, PLEX (formerly The Other Opera), Rolf Hind, Thomas Hell and the Danish String Quartet.

SCENATET

Love is not always a liberating good – it is just as often the root of human misery and degradation. Niels Rønsholdt’s surreal song cycle Me Quitte (2012) sees an iconic Parisienne love song reflected in a cabinet of magic mirrors where good is turned into evil, love is destructive and beauty is repulsive. In this world premiere recording, we hear the vulnerable voice of the composer himself, together with the Faroese singer Anna Katrin Egilstrød and the Danish ensemble SCENATET.

Per Nørgård: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 6

Per Nørgård: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 6

Nørgård:

Symphony No. 2

Symphony No. 6 'At the End of the Day'

“I feel each of my symphonies is a whole continentin itself,” the Danish composer PerNørgård(b. 1932) has said. His music stems from an insatiable urge to explore thepheno menaof the world and the possibilities of music, and his eight symphonies stand as milestones along the course of six decades. This recording with the Oslo Philharmonicconducted by JohnStorgårdspresents Per Nørgård’sSecondSymphony, in which the composer unfolds his famous ‘infinity principle’ euphorically and almost psychedelically, and his Sixth Symphony, in which the mature composer proves more exploratory andplayfulthan ever.

“exemplary performances from the Oslo Philharmonic in crystalline recordings that fasten on every sonic detail in the scores...what all these symphonies offer is unlike anything any other composer is writing today.” The Guardian, 15th June 2016 ****

“Cumulatively beautiful, structurally tangible and deliciously pure. The Oslo Philharmonic’s ability to collectively recede as if into a minimalist canvas, parts emerging thereafter with brightness and intent without distorting the contours, makes this performance. In music that’s deceptively tricky to pace, Storgårds delivers – again.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2016

“There’s something almost miraculous about the way Finnish conductor John Storgards has brought this music so finely and compellingly into focus…[in the Second] all is ghostly detached sounds, but then a melodically tight little figure in running notes starts to unfold, somehow transforming yet remaining essentially the same…yet the effect isn’t coldly cerebral: it feels natural, instinctual – as do the exultant brass and bells climaxes that grow out of it” BBC Music Magazine, September 2016 *****

Per Nørgård: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5

Per Nørgård: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5

Nørgård:

Symphony No. 4

Symphony No. 5

Per Nørgård’smusic originates in an inextinguishable desire to explore the marvels of the world and the powers of music. His eight symphonies stand as milestones, composed through six decades, each with its own unique musical world. This recording by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestraand conductor John Storgårdspresents two of Nørgård’smost dramatic works; the chaotic and troubled Symphony No. 4inspired by the schizophrenic Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli, and the fearless Symphony No. 5, in which the composer seems to embrace violent forces of nature.

“The detail in the writing – articulation bestowed upon single instruments in the tiniest of gestures – is beguiling. So are these performances. Listening across the orchestra is vital in this music, just as in Sibelius. The Oslo Philharmonic sound settled at the foundations while suggesting spontaneity on the surface…the brass and percussion offer extreme restraint and delicacy” Gramophone Magazine, July 2016

“At times, listening to these quixotically vibrant, multi-layered scores, Jackson Pollock at his craziest has come to mind: you sense the energy in the teeming textures, but trying to find reassuring form can induce vertigo…Storgards has drawn out the Ariadne’s thread I always sensed had to be there and pulled it just tight enough” BBC Music Magazine, September 2016 *****
