Vasaras vakara muzika [Music for a Summer Evening]

Piet Koornhof (violin), Thomas Hecht (piano)

Among the most notable regional sources of soulful and spellbinding new music have been the Baltic nations – once part of the Soviet Union – with Arvo Pärt (Estonia), Peteris Vasks (Latvia) and Balys Dvarionas (Lithuania) among the region’s most prominent composers. Works for violin and piano by all three of these Baltic voices – as well as by Giya Kancheli (from Georgia, another former Soviet republic) – are featured in this hypnotically beautiful album that celebrates, in part, the composers’ new-found freedom from a repressive Soviet regime. Distinguished South African violinist Piet Koornhof – one of Delos’s most prolific recording artists – is partnered here by the renowned American pianist Thomas Hecht in a program largely characterized (as Koornhof puts it) by “stillness and closeness to the heart,” as well as “strong meditative and spiritual overtones.”

Celtic Mass

Tina Zenker Williams (soprano), Kori Miller (soprano), Emmalee Hinson (mezzo-soprano), Esther Rose Williams (mezzo-soprano), Ansley Lucas (contralto), Michael Sheaffer (tenor) & Brandon Hendrickson (baritone)

Taylor Festival Choir, Robert Taylor

With this album, Delos offers lovely, skillfully rendered and ear-grabbing accounts of two very different and profoundly spiritual treatments of the Catholic Mass by emerging Irish composer Michael McGlynn and the Scottish master Sir James MacMillan.

Both works reflect their creators’ strong Celtic roots. McGlynn’s Celtic Mass intersperses sections in Irish Gaelic between the traditional Latin elements. Macmillan’s Mass sets the traditional movements in English, and adds other liturgical texts that make the work suitable for use as a stand-alone service.

Dr Robert Taylor’s internationally acclaimed Taylor Festival Choir has earned a firm reputation as being one of America’s most distinguished professional choirs – a reputation confirmed by this glowing recording.

Milan Milisavljević (viola)

The remarkable viola virtuoso Milan Milisavljević currently serves as a principal viola with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. After experiencing his lush sound, jaw-dropping technical wizardry, and deeply felt musicianship, we at Delos lost no time in planning to release this – his first recording of music for unaccompanied viola.

Milan demonstrates stunning beauty of tone and stylistic magic in this fascinating and highly varied program of solo works by Bach, Penderecki, Carter, Harbison, Khachaturian, Britten, and Silvestrov: some of these pieces in his own arrangements and one – by Harbison – in a premiere recording. To hear him play his marvelous transcription of Bach’s famous Chaconne makes for a particularly moving and transcendental listening experience.

Recordings of unaccompanied viola music being rare, aficionados of the instrument and fans of great music in general will be swept away by this unique, revelatory, and captivating album.

Grammy Award-winning choirmaster Ragnar Bohlin leads his professional chamber choir, Cappella SF, in a stunning programme of choral music by two of America’s leading contemporary composers.

In this – maestro Bohlin’s second recording with Cappella SF on Delos – his select 24-voice ensemble delivers these two modern masters’ lovely and accessible music to perfection. Robert Nelson is a wonderfully inventive and stylistically versatile composer known for his prolific output and his forays into a broad range of musical idioms. Many of his creations feature artful fusions of classical, jazz and even hard rock. He has a particular affinity for vocal music of all kinds: operas and choral creations – as well as the art song, as exemplified in this stunning release.

The songs offered here – in Nelson’s first album for Delos – reflect these musical characteristics and more, as well as his richly expressive palette encompassing a remarkable range of emotions and moods from somber and haunting to humorous. We are treated to two song cycles – Zoo Stories and the title work, Watercolors – as well as seven other songs presented in pairs or as substantial individual works.

The internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sonja Bruzauskas heads a diverse and accomplished cast of collaborators in works accompanied either by piano or by varying chamber ensembles composed of gifted performers on violin, viola, cello, clarinet, horn and oboe.

Mark Abel: Home Is a Harbor & The Palm Trees Are Restless

World Premiere Recordings

Abel, M:

Home Is a Harbor (opera in 3 acts)

Jamie Chamberlin (soprano), Ariel Pisturino (soprano), Babatunde Akinboboye (baritone), E Scott Levin (baritone), Janelle DeStefano (mezzo-soprano), Jon Lee Keenan (tenor) & Carver Cossey (bass)

The Palm Trees Are Restless (song cycle)

Five Poems of Kate Gale

Hila Plitmann (soprano)

La Brea Sinfonietta, Benjamin Makino

Such words could also describe this stunning new release: Home is a Harbor, Mark’s first opera. And a wondrous bonus in this two-disc set is his latest song cycle, The Palm Trees are Restless (Five Poems of Kate Gale). Both works are prime examples of Abel’s hard-hitting signature style that couches often biting social commentary in a unique musical fusion that combines the depth and sophistication of classical music with the in-your-face impact of rock.

Many of the wonderful singers who graced his previous releases are also members of Home Is a Harbor’s marvelous cast. Palm Trees gets a superlative performance from Grammy-winning soprano Hila Plitmann, known for her work with top contemporary composers, including her husband, Eric Whitacre. Since a veteran of the Afghanistan war is a key character in the opera’s story, Delos will donate a portion of album sales revenue to Veterans’ organizations, beginning with Cathay Post No.384 of the American Legion.

Amorisms: Music of Paul Moravec

Amorisms: Music of Paul Moravec

Moravec:

Amorisms

Sacred Love Songs

Tempest Fantasy (2002)

Portara Ensemble, ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Shreyas Patel

"… openly and ebulliently attractive, flowing with an effortless lyric pulse.” Fanfare

The above quote from a review of Paul Moravec’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Tempest Fantasy (2003) could well be applied to any number of this composer’s beguiling compositions. In this stunning collection, we get not only his fabled Tempest Fantasy, but also two world-premiere recordings of his music for voices and chamber ensemble. Amorisms (2014) is a ballet piece that can also be savored as absolute music; the Sacred Love Songs (2012) set familiar biblical texts and the well-known “Prayer of St Francis.”

Doing this marvellous music complete justice are members of the Grammy-nominate ALIAS Chamber Ensemble and singers of the Portara Ensemble. Both are firm fixtures in the vibrant cultural scene of Nashville, where they have also taken advantage of some of the nation’s finest sound engineering talent.

Essentially a tonal composer, Moravec crafts his music with brainy sophistication and often subtle emotional expressiveness, such that it strikes the listener as highly accessible music of immediate appeal – yet its cunning complexity demands (like most great music) repeated hearings in order to appreciate it fully.

Mivos Quartet

An Andrés Segovia Award winner (Música en Compostela, Spain), Israeli-born Nadav Lev has earned his rightful place among today’s most gifted young guitar virtuosos. In this fascinating album (his first for Delos), Lev has assembled a fascinating and highly varied program of music by six of the finest among Israel’s current crop of young composers:

Gilad Cohen, Yair Klartag, Jonathan Keren, Guy Barash, Ronnie Reshef and Nadav himself. We hear music ranging from lovely vocal treatments of ancient Ladino Jewish songs (with violin) to edgy and gripping works (some including live electronics) that cross into the realm of the avant-garde.

Among the musicians, Nadav leads the way with his stunning work on both classical and electric guitar, ranging from jaw-dropping virtuosity to lyrical and playfully saucy interpretations. His team of global “A-list” collaborators includes the brilliant Mivos String Quartet, violin virtuoso Miranda Cuckson, live electronics wizard Guy Barash, and three exceptional sopranos: Tehila Nini-Goldstein and mezzos Rinat Shaham and Re’ut Ben-Ze’ev. All is captured in Ear-boggling sound that’s fully in keeping with Delos’ lofty standards.
