No other work marks the change and development driven nature of Czernowin's work as do the Wintersongs. The first wintersong was written in 2002 and the last in 2014, right after HIDDEN, which marks the outward cusp of the evolution in Czernowin's work. While the existential and elemental quality of the music are intensely present as before, the engagement with the slower and more temporal perception reveals an immersive quality. The music becomes an experience where rapture and continuity are shaping the sound as if it were living matter, while creating opening and closing spaces inside the structure.

“The performances are brilliantly committed, though occasionally there is a slight lack of clarity in the instrumental profiles” Gramophone Magazine, August 2017

Tsao's music renews the idea of the lyric in contemporary music that becomes fractured, damaged, multi-perspective, complex and problematized in order to negotiate the complexities of the surrounding world. His music constitutes an example of the “speculative turn” in music composition that posits possible worlds as a counterpoint to our contemporary understanding of place, where musical lyricism is sensitive to relations between human impact and presence in the more-than-human world.

This recording, performed by Alberto Mesirca – a virtuoso in whom bravura combines with pure musicality – represents something of an event in the history of recordings for guitar, as it focuses on one of the most considerable contributions made to the guitar repertory in the second half of the 20th century: the work of Venetian composer Claudio Ambrosini, containing 21 pieces composed between 1973 and 2013.

Vykintas Baltakas' new album will arouse interest by analytical and also programmatical listeners. The piece Pasaka retells the mythological version of genesis and „(co)ro(na)” represents a fully composed fermata. Baltakas is successful in turning enigmas of musical aesthetics into tones and creates a musical experience which is both diversified and homogeneous at the same time.

Sei Quartetti Brevi

Kairos is proud to announce the release of three string quartets by renowned Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino, recorded by the brilliant Quartetto Prometeo. The group has worked closely with the composer for years, leading him to dedicate two pieces to it, one of which is included on this CD, the Quartetto No. 8.

The three quartets, Quartetto No. 7, Quartetto No.8, and Sei quartette brevi were written over a time span of fortyone years, but despite this long range of time, Sciarrino’s idiosyncratic musicality is recognizable in every piece.

However, each of the three pieces included in this collection is starkly individual, an ‘interruption’ within the ‘continuity’ of Sciarrino’s oeuvre. In Quartetto No. 7, we are confronted with the composer’s attempt to transfer techniques he developed for voice writing to strings, and in Sei quartette brevi with the enduring legacy of both Beethoven and the post-war avant-garde. This concept of a conscious historical dialog through a personal filter is also present in the Quartetto No.8.

“Quartetto Prometeo project a very composer-specific sound world; vibrato-less rustling, clean-cut lines, a deadpan/aloof tone that renews expressivity. Sciarrino wrote his Eighth Quartet for the group in 2008 and they savour its labyrinths and hidden melodies.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2013

“They are beautiful, haunting pieces; an attempt, Sciarrino says, to apply to instruments what he has developed in his music for voices. The Quartetto Prometeo plays them with just the right sense of bewitching allure.” The Guardian, 14th March 2013 ****

Tsao: Die Geisterinsel (The Ghost Island)

Staatsoper Stuttgart

Die Geisterinsel [The Ghost Island] by Ming Tsao, styled after the eponymous singspiel by Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg, Kapellmeister at the Württemberg court and a contemporary of Mozart, is a chamber opera for singers and actors.

Unlike in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail or Strauss’s prologue to Ariadne auf Naxos, the purpose of this combination of forces is not to set up a contrast. Here, the text spoken by the two actors who play Caliban is of a fragmented character and interlocks with the rhythmical and metric structure—thus seeming to arise directly from the kaleidoscope of sounds and noises in a more or less onomatopoetic way.

The singers, in the context of this work’s music, hardly ever manage an actual sung line, but instead respond to the complex world of sounds around them with speech-like musical Two pieces, Serenade for ensemble and if ears were all that were needed… are completing this potrait CD.
