Sarah Leonard (soprano), Anne Marie Sheridan (soprano), Robin Tritschler (tenor), Stephen Varcoe (baritone), Madeleine Mitchell (violin), Emma Murphy (recorder), Daniel Beer (horn), Nigel Foster (piano)

Betty Roe is quite a phenomenon – unknown to most people! Composer of six operas, orchestral works and light music for theater and cabaret, her first love is art-song of which she has produced over 300 examples. Her style is eclectic, ranging from the serious to the comical, displaying a wonderful wit as well as a firm grasp of vocal writing and a way of providing music that seems totally at one with the texts; and at the age of 87, she remains a major force in the music world. In 2011 she was awarded the MBE by Queen Elizabeth II for services to classical music and composition. This program of songs composed over the last 30 years is a delight, and features top English soloists Sarah Leonard and Anne Marie Sheridan (sopranos), Robin Tritschler (tenor) and Stephen Varcoe (baritone) with Nigel Foster, English Song accompanist extraordinaire (today’s Gerald Moore) at the piano. In several items obbligato French horn (Daniel Beer – the composer’s grandson), recorder (Emma Murphy) or violin (Madeleine Mitchell) add to the texture.

This is the first recording of these songs and is produced in co-operation with the Betty Roe Society.

Richard Craig (flute)

The flute is one of the instruments closest to the audible human breath and is caught in the process of continually becoming something other than a metal cylinder. Listening to Richard Craig’s playing, one becomes aware not of the limitations of the flute but of its expansion into a vibrant sonic biosphere. We listen, not just to the flute, but to the flautist; singing, whistling, humming are added to his palette and become integrated with the sound of the instrument.' – John Hails, from the CD booklet.

Richard Craig has established a leading position in the new music world for his virtuosity and skill in traditional and newer techniques on all members of the flute family. Here he presents a challenging and fascinating diverse group of contemporary works by British, American, French and Swedish composers – some are solos, which present even more challenges to the player – others with voice or chamber ensemble. Vocalist Cora Schmeiser is from the Netherlands and works in early/medieval music, jazz and contemporary and electronic music. Distractfold Ensemble is a British group of high stature, having been ensemble in residence at Harvard University in 2016 – this year they are back in the USA but at Stanford. The ensemble can vary its personnel and here is a string trio: Linda Jankowska (violin); Emma Richards (viola); Alice Purton (cello) This is the first recording of each work.

Song For A Friend

Chris Gekker (trumpet), Rita Sloan (piano), Clara O'Brien (mezzo), Chris Vadala (tenor sax)

A fine anthology of recent music for trumpet by American composers, in basically tonal ‘post-modernist’ idiom and with a wide range; three pieces for trumpet with piano in traditional ‘sonata-accompaniment’ style, songs with trumpet obbligato and two works for trumpet and tenor sax duo, quite unique works from two very differently inspired composers. These are first recordings and feature one of America’s foremost trumpeters, Chris Gekker, currently Professor of Trumpet at the University of Maryland, who has appeared as a guest soloist with the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and other leading orchestras and opera companies. Fine performances throughout from Chris Vadala (Director of Jazz Studies at University of Maryland), Clara O’Brien (Associate Professor of Voice at the University of North Carolina), and Rita Sloan, who is also a faculty member at Maryland and also of the Aspen Music Festival among many other activities.

A Girl

Schoenberg:

Das Buch der Hängenden Gärten, Op. 15

Aylish Kerrigan (mezzo-soprano) & Dearhbla Collins (piano)

Schoenberg’s seminal vocal work ‘Das Buch der hängenden Gärten’ often just referred to as Opus 15, was composed in 1908-1909 – years in which he had taken dissonance to new limits, and turned completely to atonality. This cycle is often regarded as the first major modernist vocal work. It is a setting of poems by Stefan George which tell of a love affair taking place in an exotic oriental garden – full of emotional pictures, never naturalistic ones – foreboding, sensual imagery, repressed longings and intense passion.

“A Girl” is a cycle of 22 settings by Seóirse Bodley of poems by Brendan Kennelly and was commissioned by Radio Telefis Eireann and first performed in 1978. It tells of a pregnant girl unable to cope with the humiliation she suffers in a conservative and repressive society. Highly varied, the songs bring to the fore numbers of different emotions. The composer, at age 83, is amongst the most senior and foremost of Irish composers with 5 full symphonies (2 recorded by Naxos) and dozens of other works.

Aylish Kerrigan is one of the foremost interpreters of contemporary Irish vocal music, and of Brecht, and her one-woman Broadway-style shows won acclaim when given in New York, Paris, Berlin and Dublin. Her accompanist Dearbhla Collins has performed worldwide especially in German lieder, contemporary art song and theatre music.

The Fidelio Trio

Rhona Clarke is one of the Irish composers living in a shadow – the perception that Irish music consists only of stepdancing, jigs and reels. Our ongoing series of Irish music albums should demonstrate that fallacy. Clarke’s work is eclectic, brilliant and varied – from relatively ‘tough’ constructs to quite tonal works with influences of jazz. Her Piano Trio No. 2 appeared on the previous Métier release ‘Dancing in Daylight’, prompting one review to hope for a whole album devoted to her work – here it is. As well as three full pieces for Piano Trio, there are three for members of the ensemble.

Apart from the said No. 2 Trio, all the works here are receiving the first recording.

The Fidelio Trio continues to gain an ever more positive reputation as one of Europe’s most skilful and innovative ensembles, and is also gaining quite a following in the USA. They record for Naxos, NMC, Resonus, Delphian and Col Legno as well as Métier.

“[The Fourth Trio] was written for the Fidelio Trio, whose expertise is second to none among present-day ensembles. The programme works well as a sequence too…[this is] a disc that does Clarke’s profile no harm at all” Gramophone Magazine, May 2017

Natalie Schwaabe (piccolo) & Jan Philip Schulze (piano)

This fabulous new album, co-produced with Bavarian Radio, presents top German piccolo virtuoso Natalie Schwaabe in an international program of recent works for ‘the screaming twig’ as the instrument is sometimes known in orchestral circles. No screaming here, though the instrument’s upper stratospheric registers are fully exploited – these works are modern and freely composed but will still be attractive to conservative listeners with elements of traditional tonality and jazz and utilizing the middle and lower ranges of the piccolo which can be ethereal and smooth. The range of pieces is wide, from the somber ‘Lachrymose’ for solo piccolo, to the bright and buzzy sonata by Gyöngyösi, and the new setting of The Pied Piper story by Kanefzky.

Natalie Schwaabe was born in Tokyo, grew up in Hong Kong, studied in London and obtained her degree in Munich where she is now based, playing with the prestigious Bavarian Radio Symphony as well as enjoying a busy solo and chamber music career. Her regular partner Jan Philip Schulze is carving out a fine reputation in the new-music field with recordings for several labels, and is sought after to accompany many top vocalists.

Mandala 3

Sarah Leonard (mezzo-soprano) & Aleksander Szram (piano)

Gemini, Ian Mitchell

Both composers represented on this album are well respected members of the new music scene both with 40 years of experience behind them; they are also husband and wife. They also share a passion for nature which is reflected in their music. David Lumsdaine, though now living in England, is Australias senior composer. His music is wonderfully dramatic and wide ranging; Nicola LeFanu has been for many years a leading figure in Women in Music; her mother Elizabeth Maconchy was also a very highly respected composer. The ensemble Gemini has been associated with both composers for decades, introducing new works from both of them to the repertoire. This album is being released to celebrate Nicola's 70th birthday and (belatedly) David's 85th. All the works are recorded here for the first time and will demonstrate why their work is still considered fresh, vibrant and relevant.

Each of the works is receiving its first recording.

“This disc stems from friendships both musical and personal: between composers David Lumsdaine and Nicola LeFanu, and chamber ensemble Gemini. Indeed, listening to the disc is something like being party to an intimate, intelligent and far-ranging conversation among old friends.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2017 ****

“All of the performances are superb; the recording is excellent as are the notes from the composers that include full English texts within a nicely illustrated booklet all of which makes this new release highly recommendable.” The Classical Reviewer, 22nd March 2017

Three Pieces for String Quartet

In 2012 Metier released its first DVD, titled ‘Quartet Choreography’ which was not only a rare visual release of modern string quartets, but also a study in how great chamber musicians communicate in subtle ways, giving each other cues and leads, even more important in contemporary works with aleatory or ‘optional’ sections.

The audio version of the album has been available as a digital download for a while and now has been released on a medium price CD.

The Kreutzer Quartet is one of the premiere quartets in Europe and every year gaining more of a reputation for the championing of contemporary composers while not ignoring the classical and Romantic repertoire.
