Read our exclusive interview with Bob Chilcott about the recording here.

Bob Chilcott is one of Britain’s most popular and respected composers and his choral music is performed worldwide. He has always embraced a broad stylistic palette and his writing for voice combined with jazz instrumentation gives these works a sense of vitality and energy. Performed by leading jazz soloists and Commotio, the distinguished promoters of contemporary repertoire, this sequence of brilliant villanelles, folk song arrangements and witty settings reveals once again the breadth of Chilcott’s musical imagination. Chilcott has enjoyed a lifelong association with choral music, as a composer, conductor, and singer. He was a chorister and choral scholar in the choir of King’s College, Cambridge and for twelve years was a member of the vocal group The King’s Singers. In 1997 he became a full time composer. A Little Jazz Mass, Requiem, and St. John Passion are among a number of works from his prolific output which are performed worldwide. He has written large-scale works, including The Angry Planet, community-based projects, pieces for children, and a significant amount of music for the church. In 2017 Chilcott was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal School of Church Music.

The Messenger

Farewell Serenade

Silent Music

Iryna Starodub (piano)

Kiev Virtuosi, Dmitry Yablonsky

Ukranian composer Valentin Silvestrov has said that ‘I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists.’ This is particularly pertinent to works such as the Two Dialogues with Postscript that engage hauntingly with Schubert and Wagner, and the evocative Moments of Memory II which alludes to Chopin and yearns for an unreachable past. ‘Music is still song, even if one cannot literally sing it,’ says Silvestrov. Silvestrov was born on September 30, 1937 in Kiev. He began private music lessons at the age of 15. From 1955 to 1958 he studied music at evening school in Kiev while training to become a civil engineer. For the following six years he was enrolled at Kiev Conservatoire. Here he was a composition pupil of Boris Lyatoshinsky and also took harmony and counterpoint lessons with Levko Revutsky. His catalogue consists mainly of orchestral, chamber, vocal and piano pieces. These have been played internationally. Early works such as the Piano Quintet earned him a place among the leading avant-garde Ukrainian composers of his generation.

Opera Colorado Orchestra and Chorus, Ari Pelto

David Mason’s beautiful verse adaptation of Hawthorne’s classic novel, The Scarlet Letter, astutely portrays its characters amid the Puritan society of 17th-century New England. My music – lyrically expressive and intricately orchestrated – dramatizes the psychological underpinnings of this story. Though Hester is shamed for adultery, her steadfast strength of character reveals a true moral sense, while the weaknesses of both her lover and estranged husband ultimately yield their self-destruction.'– Lori Laitman

Ēriks Ešenvalds: The Doors of Heaven

Ēriks Ešenvalds: The Doors of Heaven

Ešenvalds:

The Doors of Heaven

The First Tears

Rivers of light

A Drop in the Ocean

Passion and Resurrection

Portland State Chamber Choir, Ethan Sperry

The Latvian composer Eriks Ešenvalds has rapidly become one of the world’s most performed choral composers. His ability to bring a dramatic text to life through textures that are lush yet permeated with a more stringent and angular aesthetic has ensured a steady stream of commissions from leading orchestras and choral forces. The four works here reflect an interest in the beauty of nature, religious faith and legend. The First Tears explores an Inuit story and employs subtle instrumental colouration from jaw harps and Native American flutes, whilst Passion and Resurrection is a profound and powerful exploration of Christ’s death and Resurrection.

“his musical language ranges widely and the complex choral writing storms the heavens.” Financial Times, 1st September 2017 ***

“This is a super disc. All the music is compelling and the work of a composer who really knows how to exploit the sound of a choir to the full and in most imaginative but not outlandish ways. The singing throughout is excellent…anyone wanting to explore the extraordinary music of Ēriks Ešenvalds could start here with confidence. In all respects…this disc is a conspicuous success.” MusicWeb International, September 2017

“It takes its title from the most successful work in the collection, Rivers of Light, a gorgeous evocation of the northern lights...impressive throughout is the splendid singing of the Portland State Chamber Choir.” The Observer, 13th August 2017 ***

Unforgettable

Albany Symphony Orchestra, David Alan Miller

Over the last few years American composer George Tsontakis, winner of the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, has crafted three distinctive and exciting additions to the contemporary concerto repertoire. Anasa, for clarinet and orchestra, combines elements of the Klezmer tradition with dance themes inspired by the lyra and lauto, traditional Cretan instruments. In True Colors the trumpet journeys in harmonically vivid, jazz-tinged directions, while Unforgettable balances the meditative with the playful, moving from ballad to phantasmagoria in a double concerto of drama and drive.

Sweet May Again

Hot Pepper

Dan Zhu (violin), Julian Schwarz (cello), Trey Lee (cello), Robert Black (double bass), Yoobin Son (flute, alto flute), Pius Cheung (marimba), David Friend (piano), Marika Bournaki (piano), Bright Sheng (piano)

Acclaimed Chinese/American composer Bright Sheng has been fascinated by folk music for his entire career and Northern Lights is his first work to use Scandinavian folk music, exploring its kinship with American sources such as Appalachian and Bluegrass music. Inspired by ancient Chinese poetry, Melodies of a Flute captures deep and sensuous moods of love and longing, while Hot Pepper refers to the spicy cuisine of Si Chuan province. Bright Sheng combines Chinese and Western musical ideas to create luminous, deeply expressive and rhythmic scores, giving new meaning to the idea of music as a universal language.

Román, A:

Epojé

Diégesis

Trois Tableaux Français

Zootropías

Homenaje a Bartók

Justo Sanz (clarinet)

Nocturno

Marta Knörr (mezzo-soprano)

Alejandro Roman is one of Spain’s most eclectic and versatile composers. He has been influenced by jazz and popular music, and this disc charts many facets of his unique compositional style. The sonically alluring Diegesis incorporates melodic motifs from ancient Greece in a theatrical context. Trois Tableaux Francais owes its inspiration to Debussy and Impressionism, whilst Homenaje a Bartok uses a Hungarian scale in Roman’s tribute to another of his favorite composers. In its repetitive movement, the suite Zootropias evokes early cinematic devices. Trio Arbos was formed in 1996 in honor of the violinist, director and Spanish composer Enrique Fernandez Arbos (1863-1939), and currently comprises Cecilia Bercovich (violin and viola), Jose Miguel Gomez (cello) and Juan Carlos Garvayo (piano). It has established itself as one of Spain’s leading chamber ensembles. The trio’s repertoire ranges from the Classical and Romantic to the contemporary, with specially commissioned works forming a significant part of their programs. The Trio Arbos has appeared frequently in major concert halls and festivals in more than 30 countries and has recorded the complete Piano Trios by Joaquin Turina for Naxos, as well as several other albums of music by Spanish and Latin American composers on other labels. Since 2005 Trio Arbos has held a residence at the Reina Sofia Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid. Their project Triple Zone has been recently lauded by the Ernst von Siemens Musiksiftung of Germany.

Nowakowski, M:

Blood Forgotten

Emily Ondradek-Peterson (violin)

String Quartet No. 1 'Songs of Forgiveness'

String Quartet No. 2 'Grandfather Songs'

A Uśnijże mi, uśnij

Voxare String Quartet

The people of Poland have lived through often impossible conditions over the last three centuries, and this album is Polish-American composer Mark Nowakowski’s tribute to their spirit of survival. Songs of Forgiveness is both a meditation on anger and grief and a lamentation on the stark realities of a society riven by tragedy. “Blood, Forgotten” is a multimedia memorial for the victims of Nazi and Soviet aggression during World War II, the electronic soundtrack using sounds from an instrument that survived one of the concentration camps. Partly written as a memorial for Henryk Gorecki, “Grandfather Songs also includes the surreal element of a recording of Nowakorski’s family singing the war song “Hej Ulani.” These deeply moving works are a highly personal tribute to the spirit of the people of Poland.

El-Khoury: Orages

El-Khoury: Orages

Espaces-Fragmentations, Poème nocturne, Le Chant d'amour

El-Khoury:

Espaces-Fragmentations

Poème nocturne

Le Chant d'amour

Orages

Ariane Douguet (soprano) & Vicens Prats (flute)

Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France & Orchestre Colonne, Paavo Jarvi, Daniele Gatti, Eivind Gullberg Jensen & David Coleman

Bechara El-Khoury’s work often refers to his native Lebanon, and Orages (Storms) takes us back to youthful memories of nature’s chaotic moods, from flashes of lightning via sinister darkness to surreal and luminous calm. Espaces-Fragmentations reflects on time and ‘a strange journey into night,’ while Poeme nocturne marks the life of renowned French flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal. The lyrical post-Romantic style of Le Chant d’amour at times evokes the spirit of Richard Strauss. Bechara El-Khoury was born in Beirut in 1957 and started his musical studies in Lebanon, moving in 1979 to Paris to study with Pierre-Petit, then Director of the Ecole Normale de Musique. The televised gala concert of his works on December 9, 1983 at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris with the Orchestre Colonne conducted by Pierre Dervaux, to mark the centenary of the Lebanese-American philosopher and poet Khalil Gibran, proved ground-breaking in El-Khoury’s career. In 1987 he took French nationality. His works have been played by leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre de Paris, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the NDR SinfonieorchesterHamburg, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the European Chamber Orchestra, the Basler Kammerorchester and the Halle Orchestra, among others, with conductors including Pierre Dervaux, Daniel Harding, Martyn Brabbins, Kurt Masur, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Daniele Gatti, Paavo Jarvi and Jiri Belohlavek.
