Wolfgang Rihm: Sphären

Wolfgang Rihm: Sphären

Rihm:

Sphäre um Sphäre

österreichisches ensemble für neue musik, Rupert Huber

Vier Male

Andreas Schablas (clarinet)

Séraphin-Sphäre

österreichisches ensemble für neue musik, Rupert Huber

Wolfgang Rihm is doubtless one of the most successful composers of our time and can also look back on an enormous oeuvre that can hardly be classified within a single stylistic direction. According to Wolfgang Rihm, in ‘Sphäre um Sphäre for ensemble’ (1992 / 2003): “Some pieces carry genetic material within them that went out into the world decades ago.” In this case, the constant transformation began in 1990 with the piece ...et nunc, to which a solo piano part was added in the second version; this solo part was then “released” (Nachstudie - Post-Study), before it became Sphare nach Studie and finally “as in the medieval parody masses”, an integral component of Sphäre um Sphäre in 2003 - “in which new sonic spheres around sonic spheres formulate themselves around the ‘old material’. This recording also includes ‘Seraphin-Sphare for ensemble’ (1993-1996/ 2006), the most recent work by Wolfgang Rihm which was premiered in 2006, is another example of the constant transformation of themes for the constantly renewing “harmonies of the spheres”. The works on this disc are performed by oenm . sterreichisches ensemble fur neue musik with Rupert Huber, conductor and Andreas Schablas, clarinet.

“In the context of Rihm’s output as a whole, [the solo clarinet works] may be mere slivers from a vast creative block, but played so consummately by the clarinettist of the Österreichisches Ensemble für Neue Musik, Andreas Schablas, they make superb, fiesty showpieces.” The Guardian, 24th August 2017 ***

Concerto pour accordéon

world premiere recording

Teodoro Anzellotti (accordion)

Études (6) for large orchestra

Presenting the World Premiere Recording of Georges Asperghis’ ‘Concerto pour accordion’, accordionist Teodoro Anzellotti is joined by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks conducted by Emilio Pomárico.

These are live performances and comprise Volume 28 of Neos’ groundbreaking ‘Musica Viva’ series and the concerto is coupled with Six Etudes for large orchestra which was composed between 2014-2014. This is the fifth recording of Georges Aperghis’ music on Neos who was born in Athens in 1945 to an architect father and artist mother. He is largely self-taught: his interests were divided equally between painting (he was already exhibiting paintings at the age of 12) and music, which he explored for himself on the radio and in private piano lessons.

Matthias Mueller (basset clarinet)

Matthias Mueller was born in 1966 and studied clarinet, composition and piano at the Basle Music Academy and has been a Professor at the Zurich Academy of the Arts (ZHdK) since 1996. He is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation.

He is internationally active as a composer, soloist, chamber musician, improviser, producer, pedagogue, researcher and entrepreneur. As a composer, his oeuvre consists of chamber music, orchestral works, music theatre and electronic music. As an interpreter, he performs the entire clarinet literature and has performed over 100 world premieres in collaboration with composers from all over the world. This recording premieres his Piccolo Concerto Grosso for two basset clarinets and orchestra, coupled with Mozart’s more traditional Clarinet Concerto in A major and Mueller’s own composition, ‘Octet’ which he composed in 2004.

He is joined on this recording by Michael Collins who has been committed to expanding the repertoire of the clarinet for many years. He has given premieres of works such as John Adams’ Gnarly Buttons, Elliott Carter’s Clarinet Concerto - for which he won a Gramophone award for his recording on Deutsche Grammophon - Brett Dean’s Ariel’s Music and Turnage’s Riffs and Refrains, which was commissioned by the Hall Orchestra. Collins has also been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year Award in recognition of his pivotal role in premiering repertoire by some of today’s most highly regarded composers.

Musica Viva 27 - Vinko Globokar

Globokar:

Exil 3 (Das Leben Des Emigranten Edvard)

Choir Des Bayerischen Rundfunks

Orchestra Des Bayerischen Rundfunks

Comprising the next recording in Neos' Musica Viva series, this volume 27 contains premiere recordings from composer Vinko Globokar.

He says of this recording: "Four years ago a group of musicians from the former Yugoslavia requested a short composition from me. At that time I was reading a book of poems about exile. I selected several texts from it and wrote a piece for five instrumentalists and a soprano. That was Exile No. 1.

As for No. 2, it remained an attempt. Then came the commission from Munich, and for that, taking Exile No. 1 as the point of departure, I have now written a large work of about fifty minutes. The orchestra consists of 32 solo instruments, with the four strings amplified. Then there are 48 choral singers and four soloists: a high soprano, a narrator, a contrabass clarinettist and an anonymous improviser who remains unseen by the audience."

GrauSchumacher Piano Duo

Andreas Grau and Götz Schumacher, with their talent for putting together clever and innovative programmes, have established themselves as one of the world’s top piano duos.

Like no other piano duo, their repertoire ranges from Bach to contemporary music in all its facets. Their collaboration at the piano is evidence that the two expert pianists are nothing short of musical soul mates. The vast breadth of the duo’s expressiveness has garnered it invitations to various festivals and concert halls such as the Cologne Philharmonie, Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Konzerthaus, Cité de la Musique Paris, Salzburg Festival, Lucerne Festival and Wigmore Hall London and has resulted in partnerships with renowned conductors such as Emanuel Krivine, Kent Nagano, Andrej Boreyko, Peter Eötvös and Zubin Mehta.

“Andreas Grau and Götz Schumacher intriguingly explore the genre that lies between the genres — the time-honoured “fantasia”. When formal strictures are relaxed, invention often flourishes.” Sunday Times, 21st May 2017

“The GrauSchumacher Piano Duo are always accurate and well balanced, with some great feats of coordination” The Observer, 14th May 2017 ***
