Steve Elcock: Orchestral Music, Volume One

Steve Elcock: Orchestral Music, Volume One

Elcock:

Symphony No. 3, Op. 16

Choses renversées par le temps ou la destruction, Op. 20

Festive Overture, Op. 7

The recording is one of the most important of the 300+ that Toccata Classics has released, in terms both of its extraordinary ‘back-story’ and the quality of the music itself. The English composer Steve Elcock (b. 1957) has been writing music since his teens but, with virtually no contacts in the musical world, told no one what he was doing- and thus has evolved a compelling symphonic style entirely his own. It combines virtuoso orchestral writing with a sense of momentum that has its roots in the Nordic-British tradition of Sibelius, Nielsen, Simpson, Brian and similar figures. His Third Symphony is a vast canvas generating fierce energy and titanic violence, leavened at times by a sardonic sense of humor. Choses renversees par le temps ou la destruction is a dark symphonic triptych where fragile beauty is constantly at threat from the forces of ignorance. The breezy, buoyant Festive Overture has a Waltonian swagger that barrels on with relentless jollity.

“Music of awesome power and majesty that has gone completely unheralded...His Choses renversées par le temps ou la destruction pits fragile beauty against brute forces of ignorance, while his Festive Overture is a breathtakingly clever pastiche of Walton and Elgar...A triumphant debut recording.” The Observer, 17th September 2017 ****

Emil Tabakov: Complete Symphonies, Vol. 2

Tabakov:

Symphony No. 1

Concerto for Viola and Orchestra

Alexander Zemtsov (viola)

Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Emil Tabakov

The Bulgarian composer and conductor Emil Tabakov (b. 1947) follows in the footsteps of musicians such as Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, being active as both composer and conductor. Like Mahler, he prefers to write for large forces and now has nine symphonies and an impressive series of concertos to his name. Again like Mahler, Tabakov’s symphonies explore the darker side of the human spirit in epic scores as austere as they are powerful. Both the First Symphony (1981–82) and the Viola Concerto (2007) use small motifs to build up compelling symphonic structures, generating expansive, sometimes bleak, post-Shostakovichian landscapes that can explode with violence and energy.

La Divina Commedia

The musical language of the New York-based Arnold Rosner (1945–2013) clothes the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony in rich Romantic colours, this c ombination produces a style that is instantly recognisable and immediately appealing. These four chamber works embrace a wide range of emotions, from tragic nobility to buoyant good humour, with Rosner’s use of modality adding a hint of the Orient. All these pieces are receiving their first recordings, and many of the performers were personally acquainted with the composer.

Nigel Clarke: Music for Symphonic Wind Orchestra

Clarke, N:

Concerto for Cornet and Wind Orchestra 'Mysteries of the Horizon'

Harmen Vanhoorne (cornet)

Symphony No. 1 'A Richer Dust' for Speaker and Wind Orchestra

H. Stephen Smith (narrator)

Middle Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble, Reed Thomas

A Richer Dust, the epic First Symphony of the English composer Nigel Clarke (b. 1960), explores what it means to live with violence and extremism, the constant companions of human history. The work intertwines words collated from a wide range of sources by the writer Malene Sheppard Skærved with Clarke’s music, weaving together ideas and images in fragments of text from both historically significant figures and voiceless, ordinary people. The dark and powerful atmosphere of the Symphony is prefaced by the bright and sassy sound of Clarke’s Magritte-inspired Mysteries of the Horizon, a concerto for cornet and wind orchestra.

The English violinist and composer Colin Twigg (born in North Yorkshire in 1960) first came to attention as a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978 and since made his living as a chamber and orchestral musician.

Composition has always been important to him, and his music reflects the richness of his performing career.

Its roots are in the great composers of the past, synthesised into an articulate voice that is accessible in style and satisfying in its craftsmanship.

The composer himself performs in all the pieces recorded here, guaranteeing their authenticity, and has written the booklet notes himself, too.

All five pieces are receiving their first recordings here.

“Performances, recording and Twigg’s booklet notes are all exemplary, making it a worthwhile addition to Toccata Classics’ enterprising catalogue” Gramophone Magazine, August 2017

David Matthews and Peter Sheppard Skærved have been collaborating on a series of works for violin for many years now, in a partnership that has resulted in over 30 works, from string quartets to many pieces for violin alone. • Matthews sets Sheppard Skærved formidable technical challenges, and Sheppard Skærved surprises Matthews by finding ways of overcoming the difficulties in his path. • Behind all the pyrotechnics, this collaboration is generating one of the largest, and most musically rewarding, body of compositions for solo violin by any living composer. • The range of reference in this music is wide, from Australian magpies and European songthrushes, via an Alpine ranz des vaches, to Three Chants, where the violinist is required to whistle and sing as he plays.

Jerome de Bromhead: Orchestral Music

Jerome de Bromhead: Orchestral Music

Bromhead:

A Lay for a Light Year

Violin Concerto

Alan Smale (violin)

Symphony No. 2

The vitality of these three works by the Irish composer Jerome de Bromhead (b. 1945) point to the sheer pleasure that their creator takes in writing music.

The swirling ebullience of the tone-poem A Lay for a Light Year (2014) suggests the scale and energy of the cosmos.

The edgy, elegiac lyricism of the Violin Concerto (2008) inhabits textures that are brittle and clear like Stravinsky’s.

The more chromatic Second Symphony (1994) suggests a vast sense of space behind a glittering foreground of kaleidoscopic orchestral colours.

A member of his family, Lt Gonville Bromhead, who fought in the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, was made famous when Michael Caine played the part of Lt Bromhead in the 1964 film Zulu.

“De Bromhead is an interesting prospect and his music on this evidence encompasses neon-lit dream textures and imposingly statuesque brass writing. The music feels well organised and efficient.” MusicWeb International, August 2017

David Hackbridge Johnson: Orchestral Music Volume 1

Johnson, D H:

Symphony No. 9 in C sharp minor, Op. 295

Communion Antiphon No. 14, Op. 359 (‘St Boniface, Whitechapel’)

Motet No. 2, Op. 257, No. 2

The English composer David Hackbridge Johnson (b. 1963) has been, until now, one of the best-kept secrets in music.

He has built up a huge catalogue of works completely unknown even within the classical world.

Learning the orchestra from the inside, as a player, he has developed a confident and powerful language inherited in part from Brian, Copland, Janáček, Rubbra, Sibelius, Simpson, Tippett and other such masters.

As these three pieces show, his music capable of bold strokes of colour and gripping dramatic gestures.

Amazingly, he had heard almost none of his orchestral pieces before this recording was made in December last year.

“The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra audibly believe in the music in three terrific performances. Conductor Paul Mann’s unequivocal acclaim for the works is manifest in every bar” Gramophone Magazine, June 2017

Lament for a Blind Harper

Three Scottish Ballads

Christopher Guild (piano)

This second album of piano music by the Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson (1928–2015) focuses on several strands of his irrepressible musical personality.

He was deeply engaged with the folk traditions of Scotland and with Scottish cultural history, and this album contains some exquisitely beautiful realisations of Celtic harp music.

He enjoyed creative friendships with other musicians: the evocative, sonorous Hebridean Seascape reworks music by Frank Merrick, and Lament for a Blind Harper transcribes (for left hand) a moving harp piece by his own daughter, Savourna Stevenson.

He was concerned that music for young pianists should be rewarding, and Three Scots Fairy Tales were written to challenge young players.

The critics loved Volume One, which was released in 2015: American Record Guide reported ‘Gorgeous Steinway, strong and rich bass, clear treble—absolutely everything I could want in a piano, and Guild is a fantastic advocate for this almost unknown music. I can’t wait for Volume 2’, and Fanfare exclaimed: ‘Great joy! […] A welcome from all angles with open arms’.

Longbow, Peter Sheppard Skærved

This album links the contemporary world with the Tudor England of 400 years ago.

The English composer David Gorton (b. 1978) has gone back to the music of John Dowland and rethought it in contemporary terms.

He has written an extended set of variations for string ensemble on Dowland’s massive hit Lachrymae and another on Dowland’s Forlorn Hope for 11-string guitar, where the titles of some of the variations poke fun at British politicians.

Composers all over Europe made their own versions of Lachrymae, and this album proves that Dowland’s fascination endures.

“Well recorded and presented with the Toccata label's usual good standards, this is an intriguing programme that is worthy of investigation - certainly for the Lachrymae Variations. Peter Sheppard Skærved's Longbow is a very fine band, both in this marvellous swirl of modernity and the more or less straight arrangements.” MusicWeb International, May 2017
