“A programme of subtle and absorbing sounds. Despite the occasional clustery outburst, Michael Finnissy's piano style envelops bristlingly ornamented, irregular melodic lines in a haze of sustaining pedal, thereby transforming folkish melodies into evocative vistas of colour.” BBC Music Magazine

Finnissy: Gershwin Arrangements & More Gershwin

Finnissy:

Gershwin Arrangements

More Gershwin

Ian Pace (piano)

“This disc deserves a place on the shelves of every serious collector. These two cycles of Gershwin arrangements contain some of Finnissy's best and most thought-provoking music played by one of his greatest advocates. Most of Finnissy's output contains pre-existing music, but those who only known works such as English Country-Tunes or Folklore may be surprised at how identifiable Gershwin's melodies are. Conversely, those who know little or nothing of Finnissy's music may be disconcerted initially by how far these pieces seem to stray at times from Gershwin. For the latter, it is worth remembering that Gershwin's songs have been treated as malleable material from the start of their existence. Most people think they know how 'Summertime' should go, but relatively few are thinking of the operatic original. Indeed, some of the more dissonant and daring arrangements for piano were in improvisations by Gershwin himself. Finnissy joins a long line of transcribers including, of course, figures from both trad and progressive jazz, as well as composers such as Grainger and Earl Wild. The emotions in Finnissy's arrangements are often as complex as the music is intricate, at one moment poignant, disturbing at the next, but always utterly compelling.Strongly recommended” BBC Music Magazine

Finnissy: Seven Sacred Motets

Voces Sacrae, Judy Martin (director)

“Anyone thinking that the sacred choral genre calls for a dilution of Michael Finnissy’s musical focus is in for a surprise. Idiomatically conceived, these motets traverse a variety of liturgical techniques with a concentration and lucidity that compel admiration. The ambience of Exeter College, Oxford makes a beneficial contribution to the performances.” Gramophone Magazine

Clare Lesser (soprano), Carl Rosman (clarinet) & David Lesser (piano)

Michael Finnissy is one of the acknowledged geniuses in the field of new music, with a style which can be exceptionally adventurous (and difficult) but almost always retains a tonal core which reveals his myriad influences and inspirations often from folk music and classic literature. With his vocal music, Swinburne rubs shoulders with Petrarch and he is equally at home setting Walt Whitman, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Tasso. His wordless songs carry no less meaning and his setting of the Tyneside vernacular songs is no way sentimental or parody but surprisingly unemotional, allowing the characters to speak from their difficult lives in the new industrial society of the 19th century.

Clare Lesser is a specialist in new vocal music and ‘is blessed with a gorgeous voice and terrific technique’ (Musical Pointers) needed for the advanced notation (including glissandi and microtones) of these pieces, some of which feature piano, some obbligato clarinet and some both, though four songs are for unaccompanied voice. This is the 12th in the Métier Finnissy series, celebrating the 70th birthday of this most brilliant of composers.

“The songs, performed here with considerable grace, are studies in extended line as long, lithe melodies crumple into obsessive detail and undertake obsessive detours – the Beat goes on, music truly on the road” Gramophone Magazine, August 2016

“The performances are consistently fine, as is the recording quality, and Finnissy admirers will need no second bidding to add this twelfth CD in the series to their collections” Musical Opinion, July 2016 *****

“A superb release.” MusicWeb International, 17th January 2017

“These performances of Finnissy’s quite remarkable songs are unlikely to be bettered” The Classical Reviewer, 28th May 2016

Finnissy: The History of Photography in Sound

Finnissy: The History of Photography in Sound

Ian Pace (piano)

This is no less than a seminal and milestone recording in modern piano music. The awesome Michael Finnissy’s 'History of Photography in Sound', a five and a half hour epic of genius, was recorded in several sessions between 2004 and 2006.

This cycle is much more than just a musical representation of pioneer photographers – only one section directly relates to such: the title refers to 'photography in sound' - i.e. the representation in music of events, people, places, cultures, and above all, philosophies. It is the recording for which Métier have had more requests than any other, and in all fairness to composer and pianist, should find itself in every recommended list of contemporary music.

The 100 page booklet contains a detailed essay of doctorate standard by Ian Pace.

“You might think a piano cycle lasting more than five hours is asking too much. But when the music is as endlessly fascinating, engaging, challenging, puzzling, beautiful, thought-provoking and charming as Finnissy's, it is not a hardship...This is a magnificent achievement for both composer and performer.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2014 *****

“Finnissy keeps his cultural aperture forever wide-angled, ideas and sounds papped ferociously...Ian Pace is Finnissy's David Bailey, each note shaded to perfection, structures translucently and sharply lit, defining sonic images of our time.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2014 *****

“a major achievement and one that should appeal strongly to lovers of contemporary and piano music alike...The experience is as fulfilling as it is stimulating...Pace's own commitment and skills here go a long way towards making such fulfilment...Execution and presentation are as excellent as the music is compelling.” MusicWeb International, 14th January 2014

“Both composer and executant here are truly prodigious figures...It is hardly possible to comment significantly on such a phenomenon in a capsule review, but I heartily recommend this profoundly dedicated undertaking as a source of stimulus and as something to live with.” Sunday Times, 10th November 2013

“The vibrant relationship between contemporary sacred British choral music and the music of the medieval era' is what this disc sets out to celebrate, and Judith Weir's All the Ends of the Earth, the opening selection, vividly illustrates that particular symbiosis. ...an interesting programme, performed with a brightness of timbre and attack sometimes missing among fully professional exponents.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2006 ****
