American Choruses

Exaudi, James Weeks (director)

“Christopher Fox is 50 this year, and it is hard to think of a better birthday present than this marvellous disc of his choral music from Exaudi. Exaudi traverse the demands of this music with ease, and Benjamin Bayl is equally assured in the sustained unpredictability of the one organ work in the mix, The Missouri Harmony.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2005 *****

“Open the Gate, a setting of a 16th-century manuscript of O clavis David in which the Israelite King is appealed to as a gatekeeper with the power to admit sinners to salvation, inhabits the mainstream of English choral tradition, with the kind of fundamentally consonant but nonetheless sour harmonies common in post-Great War compositions. We're in a different sound world with the earlier works... Americal Choruses, part of Fox's DPhil submission, pays homage to Charles Ives, Christian Wolff, John Cage and Terry Riley. I found these works warmer and more accommodating, with the Riley-influenced 'Transcription' rather magical.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2006

Exaudi Vocal Ensemble

British composer Christopher Fox, whose work is at the cutting edge of the new avant-garde, has been well represented on the Metier contemporary music label from Divine Art group. Featured on this CD is one of his most experimental and abstract works, “Catalogue Irraisoné” for a group of solo voices. Written between 1999 and 2001 it may also be performed as part of the epic “Everything you Need to Know” with instrumental overlay but the composer wished to present the work here in is boldest and most sparsely beautiful. A challenging but truly remarkable work. • The piece is performed by Exaudi (Juliet Fraser and Julia Doyle, sopranos, Tom Williams, countertenor, Jimmy Holliday bass, and James Weeks and Christopher Fox, speakers.

Since its debut in 2002, EXAUDI has emerged as one of Britain’s leading young contemporary music ensembles. With a repertoire that encompasses Ockeghem and Ferneyhough, Tallis and Xenakis, EXAUDI has performed to great acclaim throughout the UK and in Europe, and established a ground-breaking and much-praised discography on the British label NMC. This is the ensemble’s first disc for Metier.

“Fox is...deliberately querying boundaries of comprehensibility, and Exaudi serves these technique-stretching demands keenly...The surface may be disarmingly simple, serene even, but there's a deeper wisdom at play that keeps these aphoristic statements rewinding in the imagination.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2010

Sol-Fa Canon for Aldo Clementi

Trio Scordatura

This new recording features compositions by cutting-edge contemporary composer, Christopher Fox, and explores a cross section of his compositions.

The works of Christopher Fox have been featured on a number of Métier Recordings. Works for Soprano & Piano (MSV92031); Music for Solo Piano (MSV92022); Music for Solo Cello (MSVCD92059); Clarinet Quintet (MSVCD92082); Catalogue Irrasioné (MSVCD92103).

Since its inception in spring 2006, Amsterdam-based Trio Scordatura has presented exploratory music by a range of contemporary composers and sound artists that looks toward new tuning systems and microtonality as a way of expanding the harmonic vocabulary of music. The basic soundworld of female voice, viola and MIDI keyboard is expanded by other sonorities depending on musical context. Their concerts feature “classics” from the worlds of microtonal and spectral music together with new commissions, sometimes crossing over into work in multimedia, involving text, video, dance, and light.

Trio Scordatura grew initially from a project to perform the works for intoning voice, Adapted Viola and Chromelodeon by the American iconoclast Harry Partch. Trio Scordatura has formed close working relationships with a number of leading contemporary composers, including Phill Niblock, the late Horatiu Radulescu, François-Bernard Mâche, Peter Adriaansz, Christopher Fox, Anne La Berge and Marc Sabat, and a range of young composers, with several of whom they have ongoing collaborations. One such is Scott Mc Laughlin, who in 2011 also became Trio Scordatura's regular sound technician.

“The playing of the Trio Scordatura is excellent throughout in what must be music peculiarly difficult to keep in tune, and vulnerable to the slightest error. The recording enables one to hear every detail. The recording is partially sponsored by the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust, and one thinks that RVW himself would have enjoyed at least some of the music here.” MusicWeb International, December 2012

Ives Ensemble

Christopher Fox is one of the leading lights in British contemporary music. He wrote four pieces with the title 'Straight Lines in Broken Times' - this is the second (the third is included on Metier MSVCD92059). Each piece, though otherwise totally independent, spins its music out of a continuous stream of notes. The other major works on this album are all expertly performed by the Ives Ensemble.

Christopher Fox (b.1955) is a composer who sometimes writes about music too. He studied composition with Hugh Wood, Jonathan Harvey and Richard Orton at Liverpool, Southampton and York Universities and was awarded the degree of DPhil in composition from York University in 1984. Between 1984 and 1994 and again in 2014 he taught at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für neue Musik. During 1987 he lived in West Berlin as a guest of the DAAD Berlin Artists Programme and since 2006 he has been Professor of Music at Brunel University. He is widely regarded as one of the most individual composers of his generation, often working at a tangent to the musical mainstream. He has chosen to based his compositional career around close collaborations with a number of performers, including the instrumental groups the Ives Ensemble, KNM Berlin and Apartment House, and the vocal ensembles The Clerks and EXAUDI. His work regularly extends beyond the conventional boundaries of the concert hall and includes the radio piece Three Constructions after Kurt Schwitters, commissioned by the BBC in 1993 and nominated for the Prix Italia, the evening-long ensemble installation,Everything You Need To Know (2000-1), and the music-theatre documentary Widerstehen (2012). He lives in London with his wife, the writer Susan McNally, and is Professor of Music at Brunel University.

Amanda Crawley (soprano), Ian Pace (piano) & Christopher Fox (tape collage)

“This second Metier disc devoted to the inventive British composer comprises first recordings of eight works, mostly involving Ian Pace and joined by Amanda Crawley in two song-cycles, A-N-N-A Blossom-time and Louisiana, using Poems (in Fox's own translation from the German) by Kurt Schwitters. These are dry, droll, stylistically capricious miniatures, musical dada. The piano piece You, Us, Me (Habeñera) inspired by Bizet's Carmen and Catherine Clements's feminist commentary on it, is contrastingly unitary, minimalistic, rigorous. Besides three other piano solos, including the Joseph Beuys-influenced Block, for an instrument "prepared" wit Blu-Tak, there are two tape pieces, both evoking Schwitters as a wartime detainee in Britain.” Sunday Times

This disc of world première recordings represents nearly 10 years of commissions by vocal ensemble The Clerks, best known for their pioneering recordings and reconstructions of early music. Written by some of the UK's leading composers, this disc demonstrates the versatility of the group - the compositions themselves are drawn from sources both ancient and modern, from 12th-Century organum to 21st-Century subway adverts!

Two themes unite the works on these CDs: the first is the use of electronics and the second, the performer’s input into the compositional process. All of the works save one, Gorton’s Schmetterlingsspiel, employ electronics as part of the performance but in each work the electronics are used in very different ways. The performer’s input into the works also varies considerably. Many of the works have included collaborative activity between the composer and performer.
