Slagwerk den Haag

1 EP

Michael Gordon is a founding member of Bang on a Can and Cantaloupe Music. Over the past 25 years, he has produced a strikingly diverse body of work, ranging from large-scale pieces for high-energy ensembles to major orchestral commissions to works conceived specifically for the recording studio.

Timber was commissioned by Slagwerk Den Haag, Club Guy and Roni, and Mantra Percussion, with generous support from the Nief Norf project. US Premiere at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), September 2011.

Scored for six graduated wooden Simantras (or less formally, 2x4’s) — percussion instruments devised by French composer Iannis Xenakis. It is a one of a kind musical experience and nothing like this has ever been recorded.

Timber will be packaged and released in actual wooden boxes, complete with disc and booklet.

Gordon, M: Timber Remixed

Mantra Percussion (Joe Bergen, Al Cerulo, Chris Graham, Mike McCurdy, Jude Traxler and Nick Woodbury)

When Michael Gordon’s Timber, scored for six amplified wooden 2-by-4s, premiered in 2009, it brought the physicality and endurance of percussion performance to a new level. In the liner notes for Slagwerk Den Haag’s recording of the piece, released on Cantaloupe Music in 2011, Gordon described a connection to the work of shamanist author Carlos Castaneda, whose self-imposed spirit journey in the desert could wipe the brain clean and “bring on visions.”

Newly recorded by Mantra Percussion and reworked by an A-list of producers and DJs, Gordon’s deep exploration into the extreme possibilities of rhythm gets the full electronic treatment on Timber Remixed. Featuring the studio touches of Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Hauschka, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Ikue Mori, and many more, the double-CD set also includes Mantra’s live performance of Timber from the 2014 Bang on a Can Marathon.

Alarm Will Sound, Alan Pierson

Michael Gordon's new album based on letters between Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo, doubles as Alarm Will Sound's follow-up to their album Acoustica: Music of Aphex Twin (CA21028) which was placed in the top 25 of Billboard's classical-crossover chart. Gordon has written numerous well-known orchestral works, including Decasia (CA21008), a multimedia orchestral work

with film by Bill Morrison.

Alan Pierson of the unique 20-member band,Alarm Will Sound, says about Van Gogh: "I wasn't much of a Vincent Van Gogh fan when I first heard the piece, but I was very moved by the story that Michael Gordon tells of the artist's life-his adolescent anxieties, professional challenges, and a kind of transcendence that comes with his eventual institutionalization. There's a directness and intimacy that Michael brings to VanGogh's story by sharing it entirely through Van Gogh's private letters. And the immediacy of those words intensifies Van Gogh's already staggering story."

“Like the Dutch artist's fragile mental condition, Gordon's music often appeals to be on the edge of chaos but never quite loses control.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008

Walking Song

Conducted by Paul Hillier since 2003, Denmark’s Ars Nova Copenhagen has built an immovable reputation as one of the world’s most versatile and inventive vocal ensembles. First Drop is testament to that spirit; it’s a wide-ranging and ambitious project that interprets the choral work of some of the giants of contemporary classical music, including Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Louis Andriessen, Michael Gordon, David Lang and more.

“Almost all the works on this CD are first recordings,” Hillier explains, referring to one source of inspiration behind the title. “Ideally we wanted the idea of First Drop to remain ambiguous, but the diligent listener will sooner or later notice that it originates with Ralph Waldo Emerson.”

Recorded over a stretch of nearly ten years, in different locations and with different configurations of singers, the performances documented here still come across as parts of a seamless whole. From the haunting strains of Michael Gordon’s He Saw A Skull (composed specifically for the 12 voices of Ars Nova) to Hillier’s vocal arrangement of Steve Reich’s classic Clapping Music, First Drop channels a vernal energy that’s unparalleled in new vocal music

“their works sound remarkably fresh, thanks in no9 small part to Ars Nova’s refined naturalness of delivery…the soundworld is generally post-minimal – and the singing immaculate…the highlight in harmonic terms is Michael Gordon’s Talmud-inspired He saw a skull…a striking piece from a composer who merits wider attention” BBC Music Magazine, August 2017 ****

“Ars Nova Copenhagen is Denmark’s crack vocal group of 12 singers for whom this varied programme of contemporary choral music holds no fears. They rise to every challenge sent their way- and the results are breath-taking in their virtuosity and musicality.” Choir & Organ, September 2017 *****

“Hillier's collection is a true labour of love. It was recorded over the course of ten years and his advocacy and the commitment of this world-class ensemble do the project proud.” Classical Music, August 2017 *****

“As well as being a pleasure in itself, this disc makes an ideal sampler of new music being written for choirs…almost every piece is getting its first recording and there are some striking items among them, not least Howard Skempton’s sensual Rise up my love…performances by the 12-strong Ars Nova Copenhagen are first-rate.” Financial Times, 26th May 2017 ****

“A retrospect of Hillier’s years with his vocal group, this disc presents 11 contemporary works. Most impressive is Jackson’s L’Homme armé, an antiwar meditation deriving from a 15th-century song, and a harmonic triumph.” Sunday Times, 11th June 2017

“The 12 singers of Ars Nova are immaculate throughout.” The Observer, 2nd July 2017 ****

Michael Gordon: Dystopia

Michael Gordon: Dystopia

Gordon, M:

Dystopia

Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, David Robertson

Rewriting Beethoven's Seventh Symphony

Bamberger Symphoniker, Jonathan Nott

Combining two of Michael Gordon’s most daring large-scale orchestral works, the long-awaited release of Dystopia documents Gordon’s dream of not only stretching the capabilities of the modern symphony, but in his words, of “exploring the grey areas between harmony and dissonance”.

On its own, the music of Dystopia paints a picture of one city’s future - in this case, the city of Los Angeles - that is frenzied, chaotic, dazzling, electric, and ultimately...loud.

Gordon had discovered similar sensibilities in composing Rewriting Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. “Beethoven’s brutish and loud music has always inspired me,”, he explains. “At the time it was written, it was probably the loudest music on the planet”.

Using one element from each of the original movements as a starting point, Gordon crafts a post-modern take on the master’s classical forms that managed both to mesmerize and scandalize the audience at Beethovenfest Bonn, who commissioned the work’s premiere in 2006. “I had tread on hallowed ground - no, I was leading the way into the future. Well, all in a day’s work”, he wrote of the crowd’s reaction in a blog post for the New York Times.

Taken together, both works reimagine the 21st-century symphony as equally reverent of the past (if not also a bit irreverent), while envisioning, as an L A Times review of the Dystopia premiere put it, “a drunken fugue of the future”.

“Best known for his work with ensembles (not least in Bang on a Can), Michael Gordon is no slouch when it comes to translating his high-octane idiom into the orchestral genre…such music demands no half measures in terms of execution, and the playing of both the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Bamberg Symphony meets the respective challenges with alacrity” Gramophone Magazine, June 2015

“It’s music that goes on a frantic, often exhilarating, journey, setting off at top speed and only occasionally pausing for breath in moments of sliding, swooping instability...startlingly imaginative textures and scouring dissonances...are strewn through the score: its power is undeniable.” The Guardian, 4th March 2015 ****

Michael Gordon: Rushes

Michael Gordon: Rushes

Gordon, M:

Rushes

Rushes Ensemble

Composed for seven bassoons, Rushes takes its place alongside Michael Gordon’s 'Timber' for expanding the boundaries of a single instrument’s repertoire into unknown (and at times, otherworldly) spaces. Like 'Timber', which maps new percussive territory for the simantra - a simple two-by-four slab of wood, amplified and played in a group of six to yield trance-like sonic textures, Rushes brings out tonal and timbral aspects of the bassoon that are meant to induce a quasi-meditative, almost ecstatic state, in the listener as well as the performer.

“The name comes from the tall grass that’s reminiscent of the reeds that bassoon players use”, Gordon told the Times-Union newspaper, just before the piece’s September 2012 premiere at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) in Troy, New York. “It also refers to an ecstatic rush, a euphoria that I’m trying to build. It’s very visceral for the players, who are playing basically nonstop for an hour, and that requires a sense of intensity and concentration.”

The players themselves were open to the challenge. “One of my first impressions of the score was that it looked like a percussion piece!” remembers Dana Jessen, who organized the New Music Bassoon Fund that commissioned the work, and is one of the seven musicians on the official Rushes recording. “There weren’t any obvious melodic or lyrical lines that are common in wind music. Instead, we play continuous patterns and rhythms that lengthen and shorten, with subtle changes and shifts in dynamics from one player to the next.”

As technically demanding as Rushes can be in performance, the recording required an equal level of precision. Produced by Argeo Ascani at EMPAC, the result is rich, multi-layered and stunningly lush. There’s an analogue and human “warmth” that resides in the natural sound of the bassoon, but Rushes also exposes how deceptively electronic a group of them can sound when played with arpeggiated gusto.

“The bassoon is very beautiful and sensual”, Gordon says. “After taking a good look at several centuries worth of bassoon music, I felt that the instrument had been overlooked. I see Rushes as a bassoon extravaganza - but at the same time, it’s propulsive, rhythmic and visceral.”
