Silenzio - Five Pieces for bayan (accordion), violin and cello

Geir Draugsvoll (bayan), Geir Inge Lotsberg (violin), Øyvind Gimse (cello)

Sofia Gubaidulina’s distinguished career and her 80th anniversary are celebrated with this world première recording of Fachwerk. Recorded here by its acclaimed dedicatee Geir Draugsvoll and in the presence of the composer, this dramatic but also magical work is inspired by a fascination with architectural styles of timber framing. The bayan is a distinctively Russian variant of the accordion and is an essential feature of this piece, also giving a special character to the subtle poetry and textures of Silenzio.

“[Fachwerk] is a wise and magical work, Gubaidulina at her most shamanic. Her characteristically exploratory attitude to sound and texture here engenders a spellbindingly poetic fantasy...A marvellous disc.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 *****

“Gubaidulina's fine ear and skill with subtly arranged and contrasted forms maintain interest in a piece lasting over half an hour, even if this is gentle and contemplative rather than in any way dramatic....[Silenzio] are very attentively performed pieces, Geir Draugsvill's bayan blending subtly with the violin and cello.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011

Preludes (9) for double bass

Daniele Roccato (double bass), Fabrizio Ottaviucci (piano) & Massimiliano Pitocco (bayan)

The double bass is the focus of four compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina, presented here in unique interpretations by Daniele Roccato, Fabrizio Ottaviucci and Massimiliano Pitocco. The compositions which were written and reviewed over a time span of over 40 years "are among the highlights in double bass literature: four gems of outstanding value every double bass player should learn to perform." (Roccato)

In 'Sonata' the double bass part is largely written in a traditional way. However, the performer can opt for various choices of fingering, positions and resonating chords according to personal preferences. Moreover, it is to be assumed that Gubaidulina also intended a specific gestural expressiveness of the double bass player to be part of the tonal result. In 'Pantomime' one immediately senses a certain theatricality which is evoked by melodic contours, dramatic pauses and dynamic progressions. Everything contributes to revealing the composer’s dramatic intention.

Gubaidulina originally composed her ten 'Preludes' for the cello. Later, she rearranged nine of these original compositions for double bass.

In 1975 Sofia Gubaidulina, Viktor Suslin and Vyacheslav Artyomov founded a group called 'Astreya' whose aim was to achieve new forms of improvisation by using either ancient or folk instruments. Against this backdrop, the composer used for her third version of 'In Croce' not only the double bass but also the bayan which is a sort of button accordion quite common in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century.

“By turns both ethereal and then confrontational, the work employs a vast range of tonal and instrumental effects, and the performance here by Daniele Roccato and Massimiliano Pitocco is impressive for its emotional and expressive concentration as much as for its technical accomplishment” International Record Review, September 2013

“Naxos are to be congratulated for contributing to the process. There is a certain steely cool about the music-making here, a tendency to avoid the disturbing excesses of introversion and extroversion that some might see as part and parcel of Gubaidulina's idiom, but, with Maria Kliegel once again proving herself a cellist of real distinct, the disc would be worth acquiring at twice the price.” Gramophone Magazine

In tempus praesens - Concerto for violin and orchestra

Vadim Gluzman (violin)

Glorious Percussion - Concerto for percussion ensemble and orchestra

World Première Recording

Glorious Percussion (Anders Loguin, Anders Haag, Mika Takehara, Eirik Raude, Robyn Schulkowsky)

BIS here present a substantial addition to Sofia Gubaidulina’s discography to coincide with her 80th birthday.

Her music is intimately connected to her religious and philosophical beliefs. In the violin concerto In tempus praesens the numbers 1 and 3 – derived from the Holy Trinity – play an important role, as well as the concept of ‘Sophia’, implying divine wisdom and the creative power of God. The soloist here is Vadim Gluzman.

Another pillar of Gubaidulina’s musical thinking is rhythm, and this disc features her most recent work for percussion: Glorious Percussion received its first performance in 2008 by an international group of eminent percussionists adopting the work’s title as its name. In this world première recording of the work, the ensemble appears with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under Jonathan Nott.

“Gubaidulina's second violin concerto, In Tempus Praesens (2007) is one of her most eloquent utterances...All in all a poetic reading, sufficiently different from Mutter to be worth acquiring...Gubaidulina has written resourcefully for percussion throughout her career, and this is almost a showcase of her command of the medium.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 ****
