Henze, H: El Cimarrón

Henze, H: El Cimarrón

El Cimarrón Ensemble

El Cimarrón, one of Henze's major and most profound musical statements, makes a timely appearance to coincide with the bicentenary of the bill outlawing slavery in the British Empire. In his 'recital for four musicians', Henze tells the story of Esteban Montejo, an escaped Cuban slave who, at the age of 104, was interviewed extensively about his life by the Cuban ethnologist

and writer Miguel Barnet. In Henze's composition, there is a narrative gesture that derives from Esteban Montejo's speaking style, which was captured on tape and there is the basso continuo, the musical foundation from which the whole thing grows and produces its new blossoms. It was derived from and developed on ancient African (Congolese-Cuban) percussion music.

"La Cubana" is (nothing but) a vaudeville, and the music for it makes no contribution to the problem of worker's music: from a certain point of view it is 'élitist' (cum grano salis). The standpoint from which I wrote the music is, however, not free from grim dialectic, which perhaps does not matter, as long as listening to and seeing the whole piece is pleasurable. But you should not rank this music with attempts to create art that can be employed in the class struggle. It makes no such claims, it is not so conceived and in any case that kind of thing would be out of place in a vaudeville. (Hans Werner Henze)

Henze, H: Symphony No. 9

Henze, H: Symphony No. 9

The composer Hans Werner Henze describes his Ninth Symphony for mixed chorus and orchestra (words by Hans-Ulrich Treichel after the novel "The Seventh Cross" by Anna Seghers) as follows: "What happens in this symphony is an apotheosis of terror and pain. It is a summa summarum of my creative output, the attempt to come to terms with the assaults of an arbitrary and unpredictable world. A German reality, this symphony is above all an expression of enormous respect for the people who dared to resist in the time of Nazi-Fascist terror and who gave their lives to defend freedom of thought." German-born but long resident in Italy, Hans Werner Henze has just turned 83 and is the most distinguished living composer of his generation. He has been hugely productive and much of his music is attractive and accessible with the added lure of extra-musical programmes that invite the listener in.

“In Janowski's hands the textures overall are less edgy than on Metzmacher's rival - given a more spacious, reverberant acoustic by the EMI engineers, although both versions were set down in the Berlin Philharmonie - and likewise the orchestral textures, which at times have greater suavity and beauty of tone.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009

“the music is densely orchestrated and oppressive, the choral writing demanding; there are no soloists. The piece proclaims itself serious, and does so a bit too obviously. This performance conducted by Marek Janowski, though, is good” The Guardian, 25th September 2009 ***

Henze, H: The English Cat

Richard Berkeley-Steele (tenor), Mark Coles (bass), Ian Platt (baritone), Louisa Kennedy (soprano), Gunvor Nilsson (mezzo soprano)

Parnassus Orchestra London, Markus Stenz

The music for “The English Cat” was composed between 1978 and 1982. The opera was first performed in a production by the composer in May 1983 at the Schwetzingen Music festival and since them there have been productions in many places, including Paris, New York, Bologna, Hannover, Frankfurt, Edinburgh, Santa Fe, Lucerne, and Montepulciano. The libretto consists of a freely adapted version of a short story (in letter form) by Honoré de Balzac, the original title of which is “peines de coeur d’une chatte anglaise”. The verse libretto was written by the English dramatist Edward Bond.

Lulu-Suite (Five Symphonic Pieces) for soprano and orchestra

Julia Bauer (soprano)

Henze, H:

Appassionatamente

Essener Philharmoniker, Stefan Soltesz

Both of the works on this CD have opera connections. The Henze is derived from instrumental interludes in his opera Das verratene Meer (The Sea Betrayed). The Berg Suite is Five Symphonic Pieces from the opera “Lulu”. Appassionatamente plus is a live recording from May of 2010.

“Stefan Soltesz exercises impressive control over his excellent Essen team, and singer Julia Bauer also manages a welcome touch of coolness in the "Lied der Lulu"...The live performance of the Henze is no less successful in the way everything is kept in check, sonically and interpretatively, while not stinting on the intensity of expression” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2010

Ulrich Heinen (cello)

Cellist Ulrich Heinen has over the years commissioned solo cello pieces from composers Simon Holt, Howard Skempton, and Gerald Barry. He has performed all of them many times, mostly in conjunction with Bach’s cello suites (as demonstrated here) or in connection with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Also included on this recording are two 20th century “classics” – Hans Werner Henze’s Serenade and Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Sonata.

In order that these modern but very accessible pieces receive exposure to a wider audience, they are presented here with five of the six Bach suites – all played on the same cello (at modern pitch). The sixth and final suite is omitted as that asks for a 5-string cello with a top E-string, and have been performed in this manner by Heinen on many occasions.

Ulrich Heinen came to the UK in 1984 at the request of Sir Simon Rattle to become principal cellist of the CBSO. His formidable technique and musicianship have enabled him to further develop his solo career with numerous recitals, concerts and radio broadcasts. He co-founded the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, which is one of Britain’s most important ensembles for contemporary music.
