Toshio Hosokawa's compositions for string quartet reveal manifold links with traditional Japanese arts: music, poetry, calligraphy, ink painting, and philosophy inspire him to compose his works. His compositional esthetic is also influenced decisively by his relationship to nature.

Hosokawa has on occasion mentioned that the specific sounds in his string quartets are not only derived from the fertile ground of Asian spirituality, but also from the scores of western modern and avant-garde composers, declaring that it is not his intention to perpetuate divisions between Europe and Asia: “I would not like to emphasize the leaves and branches of the different kinds of music that have developed within the two spheres of eastern and western culture, but rather find the common aspects that exist in the roots out of which both have grown.” The Arditti Quartet enjoys a world-wide reputation for their spirited and technically refined interpretations of contemporary and earlier 20th century music. Many hundreds of string quartets and other chamber works have been written for the ensemble since its foundation by first violinist Irvine Arditti in 1974.

As the Ardittis approach 40 their busy schedule has included a rare Royal Albert Hall appearance as part of the Henry Wood Promenade concerts on 15th July, playing Lachenmann's Tanzsuite for quartet and orchestra with the Bamberg Symphony under Jonathan Nott. August saw a welcome return to the Edinburgh festival. Irvine Arditti will have his 60th birthday concert on 16th October in the Wigmore hall in London.

This year, the quartet will play two concerts at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music festival: on 15th November, they will open the festival in a concert with the Freiburg experimental studio; on 21st November the quartet will perform an all-Zorn concert, which will contain, both of his quartets, Necronomicon and The Alchemist , as well as the new quintet with soprano, Pandora's Box with Sarah Maria Sun. In 2014 there will be a concert in the Milton Court hall of the Barbican to celebrate the 40 years of the Arditti quartet.

The Sound of Silence:

mediated between these cultures as an essayist.

Hosokawa rarely turns to analogies from early Japanese lyric poetry to explain his music. Far more often he refers to the tradition of calligraphy. He ‘paints’ his compositions on the background of stillness, a canvas of silence.

The QUATUOR DIOTIMA was founded by graduates of the Paris and Lyon Conservatories. They were awarded First Prize at the FNAPEC Competition, Paris (1999) and the Contemporary Music Prize at the London String Quartet Competition (2000).

“Hosokawa likens his music to Japanese calligraphy, and this exquisite anthology of works for string quartet the Quatuor Diotima draw all the lines with exemplary grace and reticence.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 *****

“Excellent, strongly committed and meticulously prepared performances from the Quatuor Diotima that do full justice to these often complex but also beautiful works.” MusicWeb International, 8th July 2013

Hosokawa: The Raven

Hosokawa: The Raven

Charlotte Hellekant (mezzo-soprano)

United Instruments of Lucilin, Kentaro Kawase

Toshio Hosokawa, Japan’s pre-eminent living composer, creates his distinctive musical language from the fascinating relationship between western avant-garde art and traditional Japanese culture. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s 1845 poem, Hosokawa frames his monodrama The Raven as a Japanese Noh play, with its interaction between the human protagonist and an otherworldly animal. Vividly exploring ideas of madness, The Raven conjures up a shadowy and unfamiliar world.

“Much of the text is delivered as melodrama over suitably doomy, atmospheric textures from the 12-piece ensemble...Hellekant delivers it all superbly, though; without a performer of her dramatic presence, it wouldn’t be half as convincing as it is.” The Guardian, 25th May 2017 ***

Arditti String Quartet

The Arditti String Quartet celebrates their 40 years on stage. It is astounding to see how many great composers of our time have written for the unique sound virtuoso Irvine Arditti and his quartet. In co- operation with Westdeutscher Rundfunk Winter & Winter releases a special album with 13 first recordings, compositions which were written for the birthday of this quartet. A top-class birthday song! The WDR studio production, done immediately after the world premieres at Wittener Tage for new chamber music, unites the major contemporary composers of our time. The Arditti String Quartet plays with the guest artists Uri Caine on piano and Brice Pauset on harpsichord pieces by Mark Andre, Hans Abrahamsen, Harrison Birtwistle, Uri Caine, Brian Ferneyhough, Toshio Hosokawa, György Kurtág, liza lim, Hilda Paredes, Brice Pauset, Wolfgang Rihm, Marco Stroppa and Jennifer Walshe. An album brimming with first recordings, sound gifts, serenades, dedications, greetings, homages, an album titled “Gifts and Greetings”. Arditti – that’s the ensemble for which critics have run out of the superlative: The fabulous four!

Blossoming II for chamber orchestra

Oulu Symphony Orchestra, Santtu-Matias Rouvali

Ondine proudly presents world première recordings of two Guitar Concertos: one by Kimmo Hakola and the other by Toshio Hosokawa. These are performed by Timo Korhonen – the guitarist for whom the concertos were written – and the Oulu Symphony Orchestra conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Kimmo Hakola’s Guitar Concerto is a colourful exploration of themes connected to both medieval and modern Southern Spain and Northern Africa

Toshio Hosokawa takes a more meditative approach as he searches for symbolic universal harmony in his music.

Timo Korhonen is one of the world’s most acclaimed guitarists. He has premiered over 40 new works during his career, and has made several critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali has recently made a number of significant international debuts. He participated in the Dudamel Fellowship Programme in 2011/12, and will start his tenure as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2013. He is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra. This CD is his debut disc.

The Oulu Symphony Orchestra has developed considerably over the last few years under Anna-Maria Helsing. Johannes Gustavsson will continue this development from this autumn when he takes over as Chief Conductor.

“The intensity of Hakola's response to the music compels attention through every bar of the [central] movement...The Oulu Symphony Orchestra are on fine form throughout and Santtu-Matias Rouvali directs with assurance.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2013

“The Oulu Symphony Orchestra are based just outside the Arctic Circle and consequently not so well known further south, but it ought to be - their performances here are terrific.” MusicWeb International, 27th November 2013

The acclaimed saxophone player Claude Delangle has long been intrigued by Japan as demonstrated already ten years ago with the disc ‘The Japanese Saxophone’ (BISCD890). Unlike the previous, all-Japanese disc, the present programme includes works by two French composers, Bertrand Dubedout and Hacène Larbi, who have also become fascinated by the enigma of Japan. Apart from Ryo Noda’s Improvisation I for solo saxophone, the programme consists of various combinations of voice, saxophone and percussion.
