Composed by David Lang, love fail is a meditation on the timelessness of love that weaves together details from the story of Tristan and Isolde with more modern sources. The recording also spotlights the singular and magical sound of the vocal quartet Anonymous 4, whose longstanding commitment to medieval music and historical scholarship has been acclaimed worldwide.

The music and libretto pull together narratives of love from such sources as Lydia Davis, Marie de France, Gottfried von Strassburg, Béroul, Thomas of Britain and Richard Wagner. love fail was commissioned by The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2012 Next Wave Festival, The International Festival of Arts & Ideas, The John F. Kennedy Center Abe Fortas Memorial Fund, The Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, The Wake Forest University/Secrest Artists Series, and Hancher Performances at the University of Iowa.

Reviewing the BAM performance for the New York Times, Anthony Tommasini wrote: “It was Mr. Lang’s music, and the ethereal, pure-toned singing of Anonymous 4, that claimed me in the first section of the piece, which begins with the line ‘he was a blessed man.’”

In his liner notes, David Lang poses the question: “It’s ‘the greatest love story ever!’ But why? Of course, there is excitement, drama, love, lust, shame, death, dragons. I think the real reason is because the love of Tristan and Isolde begins by accident—they drink a love potion. They didn’t mean to drink it, and they didn’t mean to fall in love. They drink and—BAM!—it starts. It’s almost a laboratory experiment into what love might be like without any of the complications of how real love begins or works—without the excitement, embarrassment, frustration, guilt or competition present in the courtships of ordinary people.”

“This new disc offers something different, but not always so radically different as you might imagine...With its mix of simplicity and complexity, Love Fail is both haunting and thought-provoking.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2014

Lang, D: The difficulty of crossing a field

Lang, D: The difficulty of crossing a field

Beverly O’Regan Thiele, Laquita Mitchell, Jay O Sanders

Harlem String Quartet, Douglas Kinney Frost

Libretto by Mac Wellman

Directed by Bob McGrath

Based on a one-page story by Ambrose Bierce, The difficulty of crossing a field is a joint collaboration in musical theater between composer David Lang and playwright Mac Wellman that recounts, in the words of a recent New York Times performance review, “a strange disappearance and what the neighbours have to say about it”.

Mixing arias with spoken text and emotional melodies with tense drama, the story takes place in 1854 near Selma, Alabama, where a planter named Williamson has vanished without a trace while crossing a field. The original production was staged in March 2002 at the Theater Artaud in San Francisco, starring Julia Migenes as the wife of Williamson, and Tony-award winning singer Anika Noni Rose as the leader of the slave chorus, with music performed onstage by the Kronos Quartet.

This recording of The difficulty of crossing a field was tracked and produced by Lawson White, in partnership with Beth Morrison Projects, and features the Harlem String Quartet and an A-list of New York City’s established and emerging talent in opera and theatre, including Beverly O’Regan Thiele, Laquita Mitchell and Jay O Sanders.

Yale Schola Cantorum, Yale Voxtet, Simon Carrington

“… the voices of the Yale Schola Cantorum make strong contributions throughout with their bright, youthful, and beautifully balanced sound. The hand of that choral magician, Simon Carrington, is in evidence here ..." Craig Zeichner, for Early Music America

Such glowing testimonials as this are typical of critical acclaim for the Yale Schola Cantorum (YSC). In keeping with the choir’s main areas of specialty (music before 1750 and of the past hundred years), Anniversaries and Messages offers a diverse program of mostly ancient and modern selections: a setting of the Latin Mass by Victoria and a Bach motet, plus works by leading contemporary composers Christopher Theofanidis and David Lang. We are further treated to a lovely Ave Maria setting by Franz Liszt.

The YSC is an exceptionally accomplished academic ensemble founded in 2003 by “choral magician” Simon Carrington, who brought the choir to prominence during his Yale tenure as Professor of Choral conducting. His pioneering work there attracted the attention of Japanese early music master Masaaki Suzuki, who has been the choir’s director since 2009. Carrington continues to work intermittently with the choir as a Yale Professor Emeritus. In this splendid live concert recording, the ensemble lives up to its exalted reputation in every respect, engaging their fortunate listeners with gripping spontaneity, sweet sound, uncanny balance, and unblemished technical perfection.

David Lang: death speaks

David Lang: death speaks

Lang, D:

death speaks

depart

featuring Shara Worden, Bryce Dessner, Owen Pallett and Nico Muhly

In 2012, David Lang spent so much time racking up awards — from Carnegie Hall’s 2013-14 Debs Composer’s Chair to Musical America’s Composer of the Year — that it’s a wonder he was able to wrangle a project of the size and scope of death speaks. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Stanford Lively Arts to go on a program with his piece the little match girl passion, death speaks draws its initial inspiration from the work of Schubert — specifically the song “Death and the Maiden.”

As Lang describes it, “I went alphabetically in the German through every single Schubert song text (thank you, internet!) and compiled every instance of when the dead sent a message to the living. All told, I have used excerpts from 32 songs, translating them very roughly and trimming them in the same way that I adjusted the Bach texts in the little match girl passion.”

For the next step in the process, Lang sought to recruit an ensemble of successful indie composer/performers who had training in classical music, and invite them back into the fold. “I asked rock musicians Bryce Dessner (The National), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) to join me, and we added Nico Muhly. He’s not someone who left classical music, but he’s known and welcome in many musical environments. All these musicians are composers, they can write all the music they need themselves, and it is a tremendous honor for me to ask them to spend some of their talent on my music.”

As a companion to the five-part “death speaks,” Lang also composed “depart,” the second piece on the CD. Featuring four solo vocalists with Maya Beiser on cello, the music offers a life-affirming meditative ambience intended to help family members deal with the death of a loved one. The piece currently plays as part of a permanent installation at a hospital morgue in France (for more information, visit: radiolab.org/blogs/radiolab-blog/2008/jan/29/salle-des-departs).

“The settings are wonderfully spare and insistent, with accompaniments from guitar, piano and violin.” The Guardian, 6th June 2013 ****
