PluralEnsemble, Fabián Panisello

György Ligeti (1923-2006) counts among the most eminent figures in music history. Numerous of his works have entered the collective memory of human mankind and essentially belong to the international concert repertoire of today.

This new CD release includes most brilliant new interpretations of three concert works from different stages in Ligeti’s artistic career. Fascinating sound extremes in his Cello Concerto from the sixties meet the ludicrous theatricality of his Mysteries of the Macabre from the seventies and the stunning polyrhythmic effects of his Piano Concerto from the eighties.

All three works here are presented by celebrated soloists of the younger generation and the internationally acclaimed Plural Ensemble from Spain under its chief conductor and composer Fabián Panisello.

“Does any work being more quietly than Ligeti's Cello Concerto? The soloist creeps in at pppppppp, and Nicolas Altstaedt manages a more restrained attack than any I've heard on disc...Pacing is sure, and the recording captures all the subtle timbres which Ligeti demands from his small ensemble...[in Mysteries of the Macabre] Marco Blaauw yields to none in his virtuosity.” BBC Music Magazine, Awards Issue 2015 ****

“the NEOS engineers have found an excellent balance for Nicolas Altstaedt and his colleagues in the Italian PluralEnsemble...The Piano Concerto demands a much more extrovert approach, and here Alberto Rosado is hard-working but restrained in both balance and temperament...The members of PluralEnsemble evidently enjoy themselves in the riotous outer movements.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2015

Geneviève Strosser (viola)

This recording allows French violist Geneviève Strosser to fully display her talents in a programme of singular works that she has nurtured for several years and has particularly appropriated to her qualities as an artist: warm sonorities, heightened sensitivity, great expressiveness… Many of the pieces on this disc, pieces on which she worked with the composers themselves, are world premiere recordings.

“Strosser's fingers are kept crazy busy, but each note matters” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011

“as Geneviève Strosser shows, [the Ligeti] is a very considerable addition to the solo-viola repertory...there's Lachenmann's Toccatina, too, a study originally written for violin, and one of Giacinto Scelsi's explorations of microtonal tunings in Manto, which requires the violist to sing as well as play in the final movement. Like every challenge, Strosser takes it totally in her stride.” The Guardian, 21st July 2011 ****

Ligeti: String Quartets & Barber: Adagio

Ligeti: String Quartets & Barber: Adagio

Adagio for Strings, Op. 11

String Quartet No. 1 'Métamorphoses nocturnes'

String Quartet No. 2

Keller Quartett

The Keller Quartet’s association with ECM has yielded outstanding recordings, among them Bach’s Art of the Fugue, Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 15 and works by the ensemble’s mentor, György Kurtág. This release is another remarkable addition to the Budapest-based group’s discography, an album that bridges musical worlds. The Molto Adagio of Samuel Barber’s String Quartet No. 1 is offered as tonal terra firma between György Ligeti’s restlessly shifting First and Second Quartets, bracing creations of the 1950s and ’60s that - like the quartets of his great precursor, Bartók - are as mysterious as they are earthy.

Mid-20th century, Barber and Ligeti would have been considered aesthetic opposites.

“Ligeti was all about leaving what for Barber was solid home”, Paul Griffiths notes in the liner text. From a contemporary perspective both composers are voices from the past, their present-day relevance emphasised in these committed performances. “Physically actualized in the recording, the music is being all the time remade by the performers searching for what a motif can convey and finding an abundance of expressive contours in Ligeti’s quartets as much as in Barber’s. The gesture of lament is common to both.”

The first of the recordings heard on this album was made in 2007 on the first anniversary of Ligeti’s death, Hungary’s foremost string quartet paying tribute to the great innovator of modern Hungarian music. The 2011 recording of the second Ligeti quartet documents also a change in the line-up of András Keller’s ensemble, with Zsófia Környei, widely considered one of the outstanding violinists of her generation, replacing long-serving Keller Quartet member János Pilz.

“the Budapest-based Keller Quartet handle the individual demands of both composers thoughtfully. A cleaner, cooler, more controlled Barber I doubt you'll find: zero warbling vibrato, no emotive hard-sell.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2013

“Ligeti’s quartets are brimming over with them, by turns dark, playful or grotesque — and the members of the Keller Quartett play every note like their sanity depends on it. You wouldn’t think Barber’s luscious “Adagio” needed an advocate but here it’s played with an intensity bordering on desperation that reveals a new, urgent, side.” New York Times, December 2013

“Tremendously abrasive, intense performances.” The Times, 13th July 2013 ****

Brahms & Ligeti: Horn Trios

Brahms & Ligeti: Horn Trios

Aho:

Solo X for French horn

Brahms:

Horn Trio in E flat major, Op. 40

Ligeti:

Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano

(‘Hommage à Brahms’)

Marie-Luise Neunecker (horn), Antje Weithaas (violin) & Silke Avenhaus (piano)

BIS present two major works for horn, violin and piano, bringing together Johannes Brahms, generally regarded as the great traditionalist of the late 19th century, and György Ligeti, born 90 years after Brahms, and one of the most innovative and progressive figures of his time.

The death of Brahms’s mother had a great impact on his Trio, especially on the elegiac third movement.

Ligeti composed his trio to be performed during the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Brahms’s birth.

The two trios frame a substantial, newly composed piece for horn solo written by Kalevi Aho with the present recording in mind.

Marie-Luise Neunecker is acclaimed as a chamber musician as well as soloist: György Ligeti wrote for her one of his last works, the Hamburg Concerto for solo horn and chamber orchestra. She is joined by Antje Weithaas and Silke Avenhaus, both appearing for the first time on the BIS label.

“Neunecker has a fascinating horn sound. She distinguished effectively between open and stopped timbres, but even her open sound is quite narrow and constrained...any new recording [of the Brahms] has to fight on the merits of its performance. Fortunately then, this one stands favourable comparison with the best of them.” MusicWeb International, June 2012
