Sara Trickey (violin), Daniel Tong (piano)

Sara Trickey and Daniel Tong present ‘Romanza‘ – works for violin and piano composed by David Matthews and Faure, includes newly commissioned ‘Adonis,’ inspired by Greek mythology.

Sara has an ongoing collaborating with composer David Matthews and this disc features his piece ‘Adonis,’ inspired by Greek mythology as suggested by Sara herself and commissioned by the Presteigne Festival where it was first performed in 2007. ‘Aria’, composed for Lorraine McAslan, is the most demanding of Matthews’ works for violin featured here. Its title refers to the shape of the piece and suggest the violin sings throughout. ‘Romanza’ was commissioned for violin and piano by Madeleine Mitchell in 2012 and inspired by an essay by Bayan Northcott, Matthews takes on the idea of reviving the waltz.

Also included on the disc are the classic and beautiful Fauré works – the Violin Sonata Op.13 and the Romance in Bflat. Sara Trickey has performed most of the major repertoire for violin and orchestra with orchestras including the City of London Sinfonia and the Orchestra of St Johns and made the world premiere recording of William Mathias violin sonatas. Sara plays regularly with pianist Daniel Tong, with whom she has made an acclaimed recording of Schubert’s Sonatinas.

“Written specifically for Sara Trickey, Adonis suits her lightly-worn lyricism, and she and her pianist Daniel Tong play this three movement work with evident affection…Trickey and Tong’s highly engaging performance [of the Fauré] highlights the Sonata’s late-Romantic quality which so influenced Franck and his circle” BBC Music Magazine, September 2017 ****

“Matthews has a gift for drawing new beauties from traditional mediums and the ending of this graceful three-movement work, when he finally uncovers the Welsh folk song upon which the whole piece is based, is magical in its simplicity…these are natural, unforced performances, recorded in a clear acoustic that nicely captures the gleam of Trickey’s sound” Gramophone Magazine, July 2017

String Quartet No. 4, Op. 27

Adagio for String Quartet, Op. 56a

String Quartet No. 6, Op. 56

String Quartet No. 10, Op. 84

To date David Matthews (b. 1943) has written seven symphonies and eleven string quartets. ‘I have continued’, he explains, ‘along a path similar to that taken by Tippett and Britten: one rooted in the Viennese Classics – Beethoven above all – and also in Mahler, Sibelius and the early twentieth-century modernists. I have always been a tonal composer, attempting to integrate the musical language of the present with the past, and to explore the rich traditional forms.’ This first volume of his complete string quartets presents works written between 1981 and 2001.

He takes his place in the mainstream of western classical music: ‘I have continued along a path similar to that taken by Tippett and Britten: one rooted in the Viennese Classics – Beethoven above all – and also in Mahler, Sibelius and the early twentieth-century modernists’.

The music on this CD is powerful but approachable: ‘I have always been a tonal composer, attempting to integrate the musical language of the present with the past, and to explore the rich traditional forms.’

This first volume of his complete string quartets presents works written between 1981 and 2001.

“Not only our most prominent symphonist, Matthews leads the way in maintaining the time-honoured genre of the string quartet...The Kreutzers’ performances are deeply felt.” Sunday Times, 6th June 2010

String Quartet No. 5, Op. 36

String Quartet No. 12, Op. 114

The American critic Robert Reilly described the music on Volume One of this cycle of the complete string quartets of David Matthews (b. 1943) as ‘some of the most concentrated, penetrating writing for this medium in the past 30 years or more.

It is musical thinking of the highest order and quartet writing in the great tradition of Beethoven, Bartok, Britten, and Tippett’.

This second CD in the series presents the Fifth Quartet (1984) and the most recent, Quartet No. 12 (2009–10).

“Although backward-looking, they are both so well argued that all you notice is Matthews’ civilised pedigree and bright, sinewy language...The Twelfth is full of jolly Haydn-esque touches. The Kreutzers do Matthews proud.” Financial Times, 23rd June 2012 ***

“I'm not sure it all hangs together, but the Kreutzer's performance suggests that they certainly find it convincing.” The Guardian, 21st July 2012 ***

“It reinforces the view that, Robert Simpson apart, he is probably the most important British quartet composer of recent decades...The Kreutzer Quartet (each of whom gets a solo spot in the work's linking cadenzas) are at the very top of their game in expounding this important and masterly score. I have no hesitation in recommending this disc.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 *****

arr. Matthews

This is the third volume in the Toccata Classics cycle of the complete string string quartets of David Matthews (b. 1943).

The American critic Robert Reilly described the music on Volume One as ‘some of the most concentrated, penetrating writing for this medium in the past 30 years or more. It is musical thinking of the highest order and quartet writing in the great tradition of Beethoven, Bartok, Britten, and Tippett’.

Volume Three contains Matthews’ first three numbered quartets, written between 1969 and 1978 This third CD in the series presents the first three works in the cycle along with an early contrapuntal study and an arrangement of Scriabin.

The Second Quartet, as the composer says, ‘shows the influence of the kind of minimalism in songs by The Velvet Underground, and aims for the energy and dynamism of The Who’.

The Kreutzer Quartet – Peter Sheppard Skærved and Mihailo Trandafilovski, violins; Morgan Goff, viola; Neil Heyde, cello – have worked with David Matthews for many years now; many of his quartets were written with them in mind. The Kreutzer Quartet is also engaged on a project to record the string quartets of Beethoven’s friend and colleague Anton Reicha, also for Toccata Classics.

“Throughout this disc the Kreutzer Quartet have all the complexity well under control. What an impressive group of musicians they are. Their discography shows a devotion second to none to the twentieth century British and American quartet repertoire. Clearly this David Matthews cycle is in safe hands. The engineers have done a good job.” MusicWeb International, 1st December 2014

“[Quartet No. 1] appears influenced by Schoenberg, Bartók and, in some of its aphoristic yet highly expressive melodic fragments, Janáček. Quartet No. 2 (1974-76) is more 'of its time', the Scherzo's chugging rhythms inspired by The Who and Velvet Underground...The Kreutzer Quartet give strong advocacy with atmospheric and expressive accounts.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2015 ****

Diabelli Variation (version for string quartet)

This fourth CD in the series of David Matthews’s complete string quartets presents the String Quartet no.11 – a set of variations on the eighth of Beethoven’s Op.119 Bagatelles – and Matthews’s own contribution to the ‘Diabelli’ Variations, first written for piano and transcribed for string quartet – ‘a small miracle’, in the words of the violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved.

The disc also features Matthews’s complete Beethoven transcriptions for string quartet: the Piano Sonata no.28 in A major, op.101, the 11 New Bagatelles, op.119, and the slow movement of the Piano Sonata no.11 in B flat major, op.22.

Laura Mikkola (piano)

In his piano music, as in his symphonies and string quartets, the English composer David Matthews (b. 1943) marries the idiom of classical tradition with that of his own day.

His 2009 Piano Concerto, Mozartian in spirit, contains both a tango and a blues; his Piano Sonata of 1989 includes jazz elements, and his 1997 Variations feature both further blues and a homage to Beethoven.

The mood of the music on this CD ranges from contemplative introspection to fiery, rhythmic energy.

David Matthews describes the Finnish pianist Laura Mikkola as ‘a marvellous exponent of my music’.

This disc is released to mark David Matthews’ 70th birthday in March.

“This Sonata is virtuoso music and Laura Mikkola is equal to it. Matthews describes her as ‘a marvellous exponent of my music’ and this performance proves the point. It is an exciting work and she is utterly in tune with its mood and demands.” MusicWeb International, 30th August 2013

Peter Sheppard Skaerved (violin)

David Matthews and Peter Sheppard Skærved have been collaborating on a series of works for violin for many years now, in a partnership that has resulted in over 30 works, from string quartets to many pieces for violin alone. • Matthews sets Sheppard Skærved formidable technical challenges, and Sheppard Skærved surprises Matthews by finding ways of overcoming the difficulties in his path. • Behind all the pyrotechnics, this collaboration is generating one of the largest, and most musically rewarding, body of compositions for solo violin by any living composer. • The range of reference in this music is wide, from Australian magpies and European songthrushes, via an Alpine ranz des vaches, to Three Chants, where the violinist is required to whistle and sing as he plays.

Matthews, D:

Three Studies, Op. 39

Fifteen Fugues, Op. 88

Winter Journey, Op. 32

Peter Sheppard Skærved (violin)

David Matthews’ Fifteen Fugues for solo violin, composed over four years between 1998 and 2002, constitute what is probably the largest set of violin fugues by a living composer.

They also form an extended essay in musical portraiture, with each fugue ‘depicting’ its dedicatee.

Like the Three Studies (1985) and Winter Journey (1982–83), a tone-poem for solo violin inspired by Schubert’s Winterreise, they pose extraordinary technical challenges to the performer.

They are played here by the violinist for whom most of this music was written, Peter Sheppard Skærved.

This release continues Toccata Classics‘ coverage of David Matthews‘ music, with two volumes of his string quartets already released to outstanding reviews.

“While the monumental 15 Fugues for solo violin charm and astonish, it's the passionate Schubert homage Winter Journey that's the high point. Peter Sheppard Skaerved's playing sets a gold standard.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2014 *****
