Canzona for cello and piano, Op. 56

Sonata No. 2 for cello & piano, Op. 99

Evva Mizerska (cello) & Emma Abbate, Katarzyna Glensk (pianos)

Krzysztof Meyer, born in Krakow in 1943 is one of the leading Polish composers of the day.

He studied with Penderecki and Nadia Boulanger and counted Shostakovich as friend and supporter.

His music marries a powerful sense of drama with long-breathed lyricism in a largely tonal framework.

Of these works, Meyer writes, 'I wanted the melody to be predominant – not a post- Romantic cantilena but absolutely contemporary. And the cello, like no other instrument, is perfect for that'.

Meyer, K:

Piano Quintet op. 76

Piano Quartet, Op. 112

World Première Recording

Piotr Sałajczyk (piano)

Silesian String Quartet

The twin series of symphonies and string quartets stand at the centre of Krzysztof Meyer’s achievement as one of the most renowned composers of our time. His mastery of the chamber medium is also revealed in the two works presented here.

The Piano Quartet, Op.112, heard here in its world première recording, is unusual in Meyer’s output for its one-movement structure with several contrasting sections. Elegy, threnody and caprice co-exist in an intense interplay of great passion.

In its scale and impact, the Piano Quintet recalls similar such pieces dating back to Brahms.

As one of Europe’s leading composers of chamber music, Meyer’s influence is widespread. He was taught by Penderecki, and has written important books on Lutoslawski and Shostakovich. He also completed Shostakovich’s 'The Gambler' and this performing edition has been staged in various countries - his name will be well-known to admirers of the Russian composer.

Meyer is one of Poland’s leading living composers, and his works reflect his awareness of – but not imitation of - the music of his fellow Poles – Penderecki and Lutosławski.

“Those hesitant about modern music should sample at length; admirers of Meyer’s chamber music should be very happy with this CD” MusicWeb International, 13th June 2016

Marek Szlezer (piano)

Krzysztof Meyer’s early works reflect the times in which they were composed and his compositions reveal the influence of Bartók who, in the Poland of the 1950s, was considered synonymous with modernity. The parallel triads at the end of Sonata No.1 are reminiscent of the ending of Bartok’s String Quartet No.6 and sound like a homage to the Hungarian composer. The later three sonatas illustrate the new trend towards sonorism which grew and matured in the 1960s. The recording opens with nine miniatures written when he was an 18 year old student in Kraków. Pianist Marek Szlezer has performed with leading orchestra, including the English Chamber Orchestra and at such venues as the Wigmore Hall and Palais des Beuax Arts. At present he is concentrating on the music of Polish composers.

Canzona for cello and piano, Op. 56

Imaginary Variations, Op. 114

Moment Musical

Misterioso, Op. 83

Piano Trio Op. 50

Monika Baranowska (cello), Laura Kluwak-Sobolewska (piano), Anna Ziółkowska (violin)

Poznań Piano Trio

This recording presents chamber music by Krzysztof Meyer composed over a 30-year period and for a variety of instrumental combinations. The lyrical Canzona, the bravura cello solo Moment musical and the atmospheric Misterioso are all miniatures, the latter a competition test piece demanding expressive melodic shaping and delicate sustained harmonics. The substantial Piano Trio develops over recurring motifs, taking flight through striking contrasts over a tonal centre of C. The Imaginary Variations suggest classical form through constant change, with piano and violin interacting in a rich interplay of layers, rhythms and imitation.

Wieniawski String Quartet

Krzysztof Meyer’s intensely dramatic and eloquent string quartets stand at the centre of his achievements as a composer. The extremes of mood which characterize the Ninth Quartet contrast with the Eleventh Quartet, whose form recalls the single movement quartets of Shostakovich. The Twelfth Quartet is a richly expressive and forceful summation of the composer’s contribution to this genre. The Wieniawski Quartet’s recording of Meyer’s Quartets Nos. 5, 6 and 8 (8570776) was welcomed as an ‘exciting issue of very stimulating music’. (MusicWeb International)
