Weiping Lin (violin)

This is the first COMPLETE recording of Scelsi’s works for solo violin.

Includes the FIRST RECORDING of the “Divertimento #2.”

The pieces span from Scelsi’s early virtuoso style of the “Divertimenti” to his later explorations of the “inside of sound.” Taiwanese born violinist Weiping Lin lives in Austria, where she is first violinist in the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. A specialist in contemporary music, she has also performed in prestigious ensembles such as Ensemble Modern and Ensemble die reihe.

Produced by Scelsi expert Sharon Kanach.

“Performed to extraordinary perfection by Weiping Lin… The violin opens up a whole range of subtle graduations unique to itself including double-stopped incremental glissandos and microtonality. Engaged and engaging’ Lin is completely in control of both of these diametrically opposed styles to the point that I’d recommend this disc to anyone” International Record Review, September 2013

“Agile performances of Scelsi’s early divertimentos, slipping in and out of their references to Romanticism and folk music with ease and wit. Her vibrato is clean and responsive and her phrasing immaculate, and she’s a passionate advocate for all the disc’s varied music.” The Strad, September 2013

Hispania ‘Triptyque pour piano’

Suite No. 5 ‘Il Circo’

Suite No. 6 ‘I Capricci di Ty’

Stephen Clarke (piano)

Mode’s Scelsi Edition continues with the fourth volume devoted to his piano works — three first recordings of major, large scale works from his early period of the 1930s.

The piano plays a role of undeniable importance in Scelsi’s life and work. From 1930 to 1941, and again from 1952 to 1956, the composer produced an enormous repertoire for the instrument, including 40 Preludes, 11 Suites, four Sonatas, and many solo works. The works on this CD attest to his brilliance as an improviser, his sensitivity to rhythm and colour, and the originality of his compositional identity. While much of Scelsi’s work is highly chromatic, reflecting the influence of Scriabin and Berg, Hispania contains long passages of predominantly diatonic material, using mostly the white keys of the piano with very few accidentals. It also shows the influence of French neoclassicism and impressionism, with certain moments recalling the Spanish-themed works of Ravel and Debussy.

Rhythm, an aspect of music which Scelsi held as equivalent to vitality, is the true shaping force in the short vignettes of Suite No. 5: Il Circo or The Circus, an image that is full of possible connotations from the ancient (as in Rome’s Circus Maximus) to the exotic.

Suite No. 6: I Capricci di Ty takes more steps in the direction of Scelsi’s later minimalistic style, with entire movements focusing on this type of material, with variable beats in each bar and time signatures often omitted altogether. ‘Ty’ was Scelsi’s nickname for his wife, Dorothy.

One of Canada’s leading pianists, Stephen Clarke has performed as a soloist in festivals in Europe, Canada and the U.S, with such ensembles as the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Composers’ Orchestra.

This audiophile quality recording was made using high-resolution 96khz/24-bit technology.

“[Hispania] is the musical equivalent of dressage, a beautifully-rendered presentation of mannered, equestrian moves. "Suite 5" has a similarly prancing dissonance, while "Suite 6" is fast, rangy and explosive; like "Hispania", it uses repeated single-note motifs.” The Independent, 4th March 2011 ***

Vincent Royer (viola & voice)

Volume 9 of Mode’s Scelsi Edition is devoted to the first complete recording of Giacinto Scelsi’s works for viola solo and duo.

Manto was a prophet in ancient Greece. Scelsi translated her oracle maxims into cryptic phonemes which the viola player has to sing simultaneously in the third movement. In Manto, the sound of the viola is expanded and explored via experimental playing techniques. This is the first recording of the third movement with male voice, sung by Vincent Royer.

In Xnoybis, Scelsi’s exploration “into the inside of the sound” is taken to its extreme. A central tone, variously coloured and surrounded, moves in microtonal steps — no melody in the traditional sense, but a sole wandering sound. Again this is the first recording of the viola version in a transcription by Vincent Royer.

Elegia per Ty for viola and violoncello is Scelsi’s tender rememberance of his former wife Dorothy (nicknamed 'Ty'). It is among his most important chamber works.

Coelocanth (1955) and the Three Studies (1956) belong to Scelsi’s earlier style of composing. Concise motivic gestures are developed by improvisation. These expressive, virtuoso pieces are overwhelming in their ecstatic ferocity. First recording of the Three Studies.

Violist Vincent Royer is one of the most outstanding performers of contemporary music today. Born in France but now living in Cologne, Germany, he is among a handful of musicians who have truly mastered the works of the Spectral composers, such as Gerard Grisey. In his hands, these challenging and complex works give way to new forms of musical expression that are mysterious, powerful and filled with beautiful colours. A key to his deep understanding of new music is his close collaboration with living composers, like Horatiu Radulescu and Tristan Murail, two important composers with whom Royer has enjoyed close working relationships.

“The demands placed on the soloist [in Three Studies] are immense, often requiring several different playing techniques to be used simultaneously, but Vincent Royer's performances are immaculate.” The Guardian, 1st September 2011 ***

Nono:

Post-Prae-Ludium per Donau

Scelsi:

Mantram-canto anonimo

Stockhausen:

Signale zur Invasion, I

Mike Svoboda (trombone, tuba) & Holger Stenschke (live electronics)

With this CD, the trombonist Mike Svoboda casts revealing sidelights on four heroes of new music.

Late pieces by Luigi Nono and Giacinto Scelsi as well as derivations or condensations from major works by John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen are placed in a new space due to Svoboda's interpretation.

Scelsi did not see himself as 'author' of 'Mantram, canto anonimo': By his own admission, he received the music from other spheres, acted as an intermediary between two worlds. Svoboda, in his version, makes the piece, which originally has not been designed for a certain instrument or voice, take shape, in close proximity to the language, in a declamatory pattern by means of breath, voice and sound.

With 'Solo for Sliding Trombone', taken from Cage's 'Concerto for Piano and Orchestra', Mike Svoboda devised a version for eight trombones which he plays all by himself. The multiplication of the solo part produces an amazing multiplicity of moments of sound and silence.

'Signal zur Invasion I' – on this CD in a version for solo trombone – is part of Stockhausen's opera heptalogy 'LICHT' [Light]. The composer has the protagonist Lucifer musically represented by a trombonist. From the very beginning, this character has been connected with Svoboda who had been discovered by Stockhausen when he was a young musician.

The genre 'post-prae-ludium' invented by Nono is a music which wants to play after and before at the same time, thus gradually piling up sound incidents and turning them into a hovering presence. In 'Post-prae-ludium per Donau', Svoboda's tuba actions are multiplied and rearranged by a live electronics sound designer so that a permanent spatial polyphony is created.
