Xenakis: Choral Music

Xenakis:

A Colone

for male or female choir and instrumental ensemble (1977)

Nuits

for 12 mixed voices a cappella

Serment

for mixed choir (1981)

Knephas

for mixed choir (1990)

Medea

stage music for men's chorus and instrumental ensemble (1967)

New London Chamber Choir, Critical Band, James Wood

“This enterprising release is a great success, showing just how varied – and unintimidating – Xenakis's music can be. The performances are nothing short of phenomenal in their technical assurance and emotional power, and the recording is also something special, giving the singers just the right degree of space and resonance to project the often complex textures with all the necessary precision. The earliest works offer different angles on the composer's ultra-expressionist idiom, with Nuits (1967) adopting a very direct way of representing its anguished lament for the martyrs of Greece's struggle for freedom after 1945. Medea (also 1967) uses much more text, and its chant-like style has affinities with Stravinsky's Les noces, but the overall effect is much harsher, with abrasive yet imaginative instrumental writing. A Colone (1977) also has Stravinskian affinities, and the text (Sophocles's description of the delights of Colonus) prompts music which is uninhibitedly exuberant. This warmer, more celebratory side of Xenakis is carried over into Serment (1980), a short setting of a text derived from the Hippocratic Oath and not, one suspects, an entirely serious effort, though there's nothing trivial about it either. Finally, the superb Knephas ('Darkness') of 1990 begins in an appropriately unsparing manner, but ends with a hymnic apotheosis which recalls Messiaen in its harmonic character and warmth of atmosphere. Here is one of the 20th century's most important musical voices, and this recording does it full justice.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“ I would never have expected to see a crowd at a downtown nightclub erupting with whoops after performances of four hypercomplex, cutting-edge string quartets by Iannis Xenakis. But in this setting these dense and kinetic works came across to this open-minded audience as just more hip, wild, out-there contemporary music." The New York Times, Sunday, December 21, 2008

“…discs which feature this kind of contemporary repertory are so rare that the enterprise of Mode Records must still be highly commended. Xenakis's music for string quartet provides an enthralling demonstration of a radical thinker in sound engaging with a medium whose traditions and conventions he takes great delight in subverting... the performances of Tetora and Ergma are the most effective, the mixing in of shots of the musical score in the former adding to the rather mannered artificiality of the experience. The sound in itself is admirably vivid, the performances immensely confident.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009

Paille in the Wind

with Rohan de Saram (cello)

Aki Takahashi (piano)

Pianist Aki Takahashi’s follows up her acclaimed first disc of Xenakis piano works (which won a “Diapason d’or” in France, mode80) with this second volume — this time works for piano with instruments.

She is joined by an all-star cast of players: Rohan de Saram (formerly of the Arditti Quartet), The JACK Quartet, and the Callithumpian Consort conducted by Stephen Drury.

All works are underrepresented in current recordings or difficult to find at all.

Includes the first new recording in over 10 years of Xenakis’ landmark EONTA (1963) for piano, 2 trumpets & 3 trombones — a blistering work which rates among the most difficult solo piano pieces ever written. Unique effects include requiring the brass players to move about the stage for spatialised effects, and to point the bells of the brass instruments into the piano and play to create resonance.

AKEA (1986), written for Claude Helffer and the Arditti Quartet, is not a typical addition to the romantic tradition of the piano quintet. It signaled the beginning of a more inward, reflective phase of Xenakis’ output.

MORISIMA/AMORSIMA, was composed with the aid of a computer in 1962. This is the only readily available recording

PAILLE IN THE WIND (1992) for piano & cello performed with Rohan de Saram. This is the only available recording

Charisma X presents the visionary work and ideas of Greek composer and architect Iannis Xenakis, structured around musical performances, interviews and testimonies from Xenakis’ collaborators and those with a deep understanding of his work.

Xenakis appears in rare historical footage…talking about his multimedia electronic work La Legende d’eer, with film of the performance and the Diatope in front of the Pompidou Centre; he demonstrates the UPIC, the computer which he designed that allows music to be drawn on a computer screen; speaking about his opera Oresteïa and various Greek legends which influenced his work.

It explores the relationship between his music and architecture, including working for Le Corbusier. His architectural achievements of the Philips Pavilion at Expo 58, the convent of La Tourette, his home in Corsica, and the houses he designed for his daughter Mâkhi and composer Mâche are shown.

The film also includes an interview with an eyewitness to Xenakis’ devastating injury which he suffered as a Resistance fighter in Athens (1945), which has affected his life and work.

An exhilarating Xenakis programe, built around works for soloist and ensemble. Most of the soloists are from the acclaimed International Contemporary Ensemble led by their resident guest conductor, Steven Schick. 'Zythos' and 'O-Mega' are among Xenakis’s final compositions. In the Xenakis oeuvre these constitute a new and plaintive percussion music. Yet there is a strange power in these stark landscapes. In 'Zythos,' long trombone lines are wound round the threading of six marimba parts. It receives its first recording here, featuring trombonist Benny Sluchin of Ensemble Intercontemporain. 'O-Mega', a fitting name for Xenakis’s final work, is a short offering for percussion soloist and chamber group.

“The momentous masterpiece Thallein (1984) reinvents the concerto grosso with manic soloistic episodes. The playing is brilliant throughout.” Sunday Times, 19th January 2014

“Best of all, there's Thallein from 1984; it's one of the finest of Xenakis's later works...in which sound seems to be moulded like molten metal and and propelled with sometimes frightening rhythmic intensity. The performances under Steven Schick don't squander any of that power.” The Guardian, 20th February 2014 ****

A film by Benny Sluchin (78 minutes), which explores the work in detail through films & recordings of Xenakis himself (in rare footage) and a wide group of people speak of the music and Xenakis’ relation to Greek mythology, mathematics, open-form composition, game theory and computer assisted performance.

Sluchin explains the development of the computer interface which assists with the performance with, in alphabetical order, Moreno Andreatta, Gérard Assayag, Jérémie Dufourt, Sharon Kanach, Mikhail Malt, Jens McManama, Pierre Michel, Benny Sluchin, Makis Solomos, and Iannis Xenakis.

• Iannis Xenakis on 'Double Audition': French radio broadcast from 1974 on 'Linaia-Agon'. Xenakis is interviewed, with two complete performances and musical excerpts live in the studio (57:31, no video)

• INTERACTIVE INTERFACE allows the viewer to perform the piece on computer using sound samples, engaging in a musical battle while gathering points to reveal the final victor. The DVD includes a filmed demonstration of how to use this interface which can be accessed on the internet.

• The films are in French with English and French subtitles.

The documents presented on this DVD propose a musical journey through this wide range of topics focused on Iannis Xenakis and his work 'Linaia Agon'. Conceived by the great new music trombonist Benny Sluchin, it is an interpreter’s quest for truth regarding musical creation, a legendary composer and musical performance at the beginning of the 21st century.

'Linaia-Agon' (1972) scored for the unusual combination of trombone, French horn & tuba, was an unduly neglected work because of performance problems in the printed score. Those remained unresolved until a computer interface was developed recently by IRCAM in collaboration with Benny Sluchin. It is a 'game' piece in which 3 musicians, representing the legendary Greek musician Linos [trombone] against the god Apollo [French horn & tuba], battle each via musical strategies in the score. No two versions of this piece will be the same. 'Zythos' is one of Xenakis’ last works. Previously issued on MODE261, this DVD release is the first in surround sound with full video directed by Anton Cabaliero.
