SCENATET

Love is not always a liberating good – it is just as often the root of human misery and degradation. Niels Rønsholdt’s surreal song cycle Me Quitte (2012) sees an iconic Parisienne love song reflected in a cabinet of magic mirrors where good is turned into evil, love is destructive and beauty is repulsive. In this world premiere recording, we hear the vulnerable voice of the composer himself, together with the Faroese singer Anna Katrin Egilstrød and the Danish ensemble SCENATET.

The fusion – or 'alliage' – of French sonorities with Nordic structural thinking gives Niels Rosing-Schow’s works a special position in Danish and international music. His music mixes Nordic light, golden phrasing, a keen sense of resonance and musical layers that illuminate one another – all seasoned with a feeling for giving the music content and weight.

The six new works on this CD and Rosing-Schow’s ‘classic’ Ritus I from 1991 are premiered on this CD by a selection of Denmark’s leading interpreters of contemporary music today.

“Committed performances, as one might expect from this crop of the leading Danish musicians, and unexceptionally fine sound enhance the attractions of a release that certainly makes a representative introduction to another composer of note within the Danish musical firmament.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2015

The Danish composer Mogens Christensen (b. 1955) is known for his exquisite sense of tone colour and for his unusual inspirational sources, found in dreams, astrology and natural phenomena. The title work of this CD, Busy Bees and Birds, explores the fascinating sound world of a lively beehive juxtaposed with fabulating birdsong, while his cycle Nocturnal Birds invites the listener to share the experience of atmospheric nightly birdsong through all four seasons – and through a timeless kaleidoscope of acoustic and electronic sounds around recorder soloist Pernille Petersen.

Sound-magic and continuous transformations are key elements in the music of Danish composer Niels Rosing-Schow.

This world premiere recording by the leading French ensemble TM+ presents five of Rosing-Schow’s most profound compositions, all exploring the concept of time: time as motion, as process, as imprints or mapping – and time as space.

A marked sense of lyrical expression has always been a characteristic of Rosing-Schow, but in the later years he has combined this with an experimental exploration of the more dramatic and expansive possibilities of his musical material.

“Although rather forbidding, they repay concentration and are full of unexpected textures.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 ****

The Danish-domiciled Californian composer Wayne Siegel is a pioneer of the interaction between computers and acoustic instruments. The title work of this CD is constructed solely from the voice of a singer which has been transformed into percussive elements, pitches and melodies. Other intriguing effects on this album include electronic canons, layering and delayed echoes – all putting the acoustic solo instruments in new and exciting perspectives.

The Danish composer Gunnar Berg (1909-89) was part of the international modernist milieu in post-war Europe, and his music has only recently become known and acknowledged in earnest in his native Denmark.

This premiere recording of a number of Berg’s chamber music works with piano from the 1950s and 1960s offers unusual instrument combinations including saxophone, trumpet, bass clarinet and marimba.

“The melodic contours rather defy you to grasp their shape but, like a mid-Atlantic wave, they are full of potential energy, their origin and direction being harder to plot.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2012

Randers Chamber Orchestra, David Riddell

Uniquely conscious of tradition, Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen (b. 1958) is a composer fully capable of writing insistent, rhythmically marked music. This new CD centres on a tiny, striking dance motif that is taken on unpredictable detours off the beaten track.

The Scottish conductor David Riddell is the artistic director and main conductor of the Randers Chamber Orchestra, as well as artistic director of the Aarhus Summer Opera. He is a frequent guest conductor for most of the Danish orchestras and in Britain he has appeared with the Northern Sinfonia, English Touring Opera, Scottish Opera and The Garden Venture (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), amongst others.

Peter Bruun (b. 1968) is one of the most distinctive and exciting voices in his generation of Danish composers. His sense of timbre and sonority is highly sensual as appears in these three works witnessing the composer’s strong fascination with the ocean.

Holmen: Oort Cloud

Holmen: Oort Cloud

world premiere recording

Torben Snekkestad (soprano saxophone), Frode Andersen (accordion) & Frode Haltli (accordion)

Oort Cloud is a piece for accordian, saxophone and electronics by Danish composer Jexper Holmen. This is the World Premiere Recording of Holmen’s breakthrough work from Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

The composer described the piece as a “sphere of sound, inspired by the cloud of comets believed to surround the solar system a light-year away. The music is extremely slow and relentless, not unlike a cosmic disaster.”

Jexper Holmen is a composer of extremes - a ‘classicial' composer with a penchant for the likes of Aphex Twin. One that enjoys placing the soft noise distortion of ambient electronica alongside the radical thinking.
