Trio Ismena

A special Nordic blend of lightness and melancholy is shared by the five piano trios on this CD, although it is indeed five highly individual composers that are presented here by prizewinning Ismena Trio.

The listener is taken from Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen’s dynamic inwardness through Jesper Koch’s elegance and Lars Hegaard’s sound-objects to Ib Nørholm’s masterly, rigorous expression and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s no less rigorously controlled yet more surprising exchanges of opinions between the instruments.

Trio Ismena has celebrated its 10th anniversary and is a well established ensemble on the Danish chamber music scene. After forming as a trio in 2004, Monika Malmquist (violin), Ida Nørholm(cello) and Christine Raft (piano) have thrilled audiences with their musical insight and seriousness.

“[The Gudmundsen-Holmgreen] piece is worth the price of the disc alone, and suggests that Nielsen's legacy of individuality has eclipsed Gade's ideas of conformity when it comes to Denmark's most worthy 21st-century music” Gramophone Magazine, January 2016

Else Torp (soprano), Per Pålsson (guitar) & Mathias Friis-Hansen (percussion)

Composer Ib Nørholm (b. 1931) presents us with a delightful twist on Danish nocturne and condensed music drama for two in Tavole per Orfeo. This world première recording by soprano Else Torp and guitarist Per Pålsson unfolds as a fascinating testimony to an inspired encounter between words and music and a meeting of strong artistic personalities. Else Torp has performed with a selection of renowned orchestras and is a core member of Paul Hillier’s Theatre of Voices.

“the composer could hardly wish for more elegant interpreters. Inevitably, Else Torp takes centre stage. In the more modernist pieces her straight tone allows for admirable clarity, while the tonal ones admit of judicious vibrato.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012
