Rasmussen, S: Symphony No. 2 'The Earth Anew'

Cyndia Sieden (soprano), Bo Skovhus (soprano)

Akademiska Sångföreningen, Muntra Musikanter, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, John Storgårds

The second symphony of the prize-winning Faroese composer Sunleif Rasmussen (b. 1961) is composed as a life cycle based on the Old Norse myth of the tree of life, Yggdrasil, and carries the title ‘The Earth Anew’. Inspired by natural phenomena and Faroese melodies, Rasmussen is a great believer in a shared Nordic identity, and this world premiere recording bears witness to his strong artistic partnership with Finnish conductor John Storgårds and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

“New music of a very, very high quality in a thrilling performance- and we have Storgards to thank for both.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2017

Rasmussen - String against String

Rasmussen - String against String

Rasmussen, S:

String Quartet No. 1 (1989)

String Quartet No. 2 “Sunshine and Shadows” (2001)

Grave – in Memoriam Karsten Hoydal (1990) for clarinet, strings and percussion

Violin Concerto No. 1 “Songs of Seasons” (2004)

Echoes of the Past (1992) for solo violin

With this premiere recording of Sunleif Rasmussen’s works for strings it is clear that the point of departure for Rasmussen’s music may be Faroese - or at any rate ultra-Nordic - but its stature is global. Rasmussen’s works always have a natural complexity, combining his jazz background with a rich tradition of Faroese folk music and electro-acoustic and spectral music. The result is highly evocative and beautiful to listen to, as demonstrated by the five works for strings on this CD.

Aldubáran

The five works on this CD offer a broad perspective on the Faroese composer Sunleif Rasmussen (b. 1961). In the virtuoso playing of the ensemble Aldubáran the listener can hear lyrical echoes of traditional folk music, Baroque structures and electronically manipulated sounds as Rasmussen combines the seven instruments of the ensemble in a wide variety of configurations.

Lapland Chamber Orchestra, John Storgårds

In the five works on this new recording, the prize-winning Faroese composer Sunleif Rasmussen (b. 1961) lets the melodies of Faroese folk songs become the musical DNA in powerful sound-evocations of nature - either latently as a basis for ingenious constructions of great sensuality, or quite directly, so that anyone in the North Atlantic islands can hum along. Interpreted by the acclaimed Lapland Chamber Orchestra under the baton of John Storgårds, Rasmussen’s music is in strong fellow Nordic hands on this recording.

“Superb performances throughout from the funding-threatened Lapland Chamber Orchestra players, with Dacapo's standard excellent sound.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2014
