Riisager - Benzin

Riisager:

Benzin, Op. 17 (1928): Ballet i én akt af Robert Storm Petersen

Til Apollon, lysets gud (1972)

Archæopteryx, Op. 51

“Benzin is a joke,” said the Danish composer Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974) of the work he created for the Royal Danish Ballet in 1928 along with his friend, the popular cartoonist known as “Storm P.” A dubious joke, however, as the ballet was taken off the bill after just three performances. It is possible that the stage design was too unorthodox, or the plot too thin. Alternatively, perhaps Riisager’s music was quite simply too beautiful to be funny. With this world première recording of the music, at any rate, it is clear that Riisager’s unique talent for colourful, intelligent orchestration evokes the magic of 20th-century orchestral music at its very best.

Riisager was a violin player himself and composed for the instrument throughout his career. This collection of his violin music demonstrates the composer's fascinating musical development, featuring student works as well as mature compositions with challenging harmonies in charming neo-Baroque forms.

Johannes Søe Hansen trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and is Concertmaster of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 1992.

“Two sonatas give the disc ballast...No less impressive are the artistry and dedication lavished on the programme by all the performers.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2013

“Johannes Søe Hansen is very well teamed with Christina Bjørkøe and they make a fine case for the music. The other string players make a commendable ensemble in the Concertino.” MusicWeb International, 13th May 2013

Knudåge Riisager was a pioneer of the Neo-Classical style in Danish music. This re-release of the previously acclaimed CD on Dacapo (no longer available), has been given a new lease of life in outstanding SACD sound quality.

Lively and inventive, the music on this disc spans the years 1933-1940 and shows Riisager both as a composer inspired by the Neo-Baroque and as an exponent of a decidedly Danish sound.

“This will be a must for brass aficionados” International Record Review on its original release

Knudåge Riisager: The Symphonic Edition Volume 1

Riisager:

Symphony No. 1, Op. 8

Erasmus Montanus, Op. 1

Klods Hans (Jack the Dullard), Op. 18

Comoedie, Op. 21

Fastelavn (Shrovetide), Op. 20

Dacapo Records are delighted to present this world premiere recording series of the five symphonies by Knudåge Riisager. After having issued the composer's orchestral and ballet music, we have now reached Riisager's absolute key works in the devoted hands of conductor Bo Holten and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. The cycle opens with the virtuosic Symphony No. 1. Also featured are four lively and humorous orchestral pieces.

“None of these pieces is exactly easy to play, the more so since none is in any orchestra's repertoire (nor, to be realistic, ever likely to be). The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra acquits itself bravely under Bo Holten's firm direction and, as usual from this source, recording quality and documentation are first-rate.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012

“entirely idiomatic readings, with the rhythms fully sprung; the intricate details of Riisager's often headlong writing obviously holding no fears for the musicians...Not unalloyed gold...but very good fun, with occasional depths (the slow movement of the Symphony eventually reveals some strength of feeling), and some roller-coaster handling of the orchestra. Worth your time.” International Record Review, January 2012

Symphony No. 2, Op. 14

Concerto for Orchestra, Op. 24

Sinfonia (Symphony No. 3), Op. 30

This second volume presents some highly original and imaginative Riisager works from the 1920s and 30s - from the tribute to the aeroplane T-DOXC to the two bright symphonies and the neo-Baroque Concerto for Orchestra.

“Holten and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra manage to negotiate these tricky scores with a minimum of rough edges and even to give an impression of seasoned acquaintance.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2013

Riisager:

Summer Rhapsody (on Danish folk melodies) for orchestra

Sinfonia Concertante per strumenti ad arco, Op. 34

Sinfonia gaia (Symphony No. 4), Op. 38

Sinfonia serena (Symphony No. 5) for strings and timpani, Op. 52

In this series of world premiere recordings of the symphonic music of Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974), you get to know the charming Danish composer through a genre he once tried to 'kill off ', yet at the same time refused to abandon. The Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, recorded here along with the Sinfonia concertante and the entertaining Summer Rhapsody, show Riisager as a searching, unprejudiced composer for whom the classical form types, despite all opposition, kept their attraction and fascination.

“All this music is unchallenging and easy to listen to on a first hearing. Most of it bears repeated listening too...We are fortunate indeed to have such worthwhile music available on disc...Highly recommended.” International Record Review, May 2014

“For those yet to commit to this cycle, the present volume may well prove the most rewarding...The ASO are in fine form - there is some tremendous brass-playing on the Summer Rhapsody, but the string sections too are worthy of especial mention. Under Bo Holten they have emerged as compelling advocates of Riisager's music.” MusicWeb International, 21st March 2014
