Nørgård - Symphonies Nos. 3 & 7

Nørgård - Symphonies Nos. 3 & 7

Nørgård:

Symphony No. 3 'Twilight'

Symphony No. 7

Per Nørgård’s symphonies are milestones in the music of our time. On this unique CD we hear a new recording of the famous Third Symphony, a watershed work of the seventies that pays tribute to the unifying force of the universe.

The new Seventh Symphony is a dynamic, highly complex work coloured by much use of percussion and a myriad of impulses. Once more it shows new aspects of Nørgård as the constantly developing master of Scandinavian music. This is the world première recording.

The Seventh symphony is the main LIVE feature at the concert for the grand opening of the new and state-of-the-art concert hall in DR Byen in Copenhagen, the National Broadcast’s new home. This will be January 17th.

The conductor Thomas Dausgaard is a true connoisseur and good friend of Nørgård and here together with the Danish National Choir and Symphony Orchestra interprets these wonderful symphonies with stunning flamboyance.

“It's wonderfully approachable, glowing music that includes everything from clusters of microtones to Latin American rhythms and languorous melodies.” The Guardian, 3rd April 2009 ****

Gudmundsen-Holmgreen: Incontri

Gudmundsen-Holmgreen: Incontri

Works for Orchestra

Gudmundsen-Holmgreen:

Incontri for orchestra

Mirror II for orchestra

Symphony-Antiphony

The concept of musical meetings – in Italian “incontri” – is a common denominator in the three orchestral pieces by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen on this CD, recorded in the presence of the composer by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Thomas Dausgaard. The fantastic hallucinogenic landscape of the title work, presented here in a live recording from the BBC Proms 2012, meets the pulsating irony of the two modern classics Symphony, Antiphony and Mirror II – all three works reflecting the composer’s lifelong fascination with the absurd.

Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen was one of the most striking composers from northern Europe over the past half century – a unique personality and a major figure in Danish musical life, even though he considered himself to be an outsider.

He was born in 1932 and had his debut as a composer in 1955. In his early works, Gudmundsen-Holmgreen was inspired by such figures as Nielsen, Bartók and Stravinsky. Around 1960, he became a leading figure within ‘the new simplicity’: laconic music which nevertheless, in Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s hands, could be extremely ambiguous. Equivocality and a provocative absurdity are recurrent features of his production. As he himself formulated it: ‘I often write music that cannot make up its mind, and that is deliberate.’

The material in Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s music was often extremely restricted. Motifs and sound elements are repeated and displayed without mercy, since confrontation for him was artistically speaking the salt of life. This led both to violent clashes and to completely static, eventless modes of expression.

“Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen was a distinctive voice. These performances from Thomas Dausgaard and the BBC Symphony Orchestra could not be bettered. The recordings are all tip top and there are excellent booklet notes from Andrew Mellor…this is a stunning new release from Dacapo.” The Classical Reviewer, 20th October 2016

Bent Sørensen: Sounds Like You (Live)

Bent Sørensen: Sounds Like You (Live)

Sørensen, B:

Intermezzi

Sounds Like You

Loré Lixenberg (mezzo-soprano), Signe Asmussen (mezzo-soprano)

DR SymfoniOrkestret, DR VokalEnsemblet, Thomas Dausgaard

Bent Sørensen’s work Sounds Like You, with text by playwright Peter Asmussen, is a coupling of music and theatre, of orchestral work and drama, or in the composer’s own words: a theatrical play that has become an orchestral work and vice versa.

The piece was commissioned by DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) in collaboration with the Bergen Festival and is here recorded in a live performance by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, two actors and a selection of singers from the Danish National Vocal Ensemble under Thomas Dausgaard.

On the CD, Sounds Like You is combined with Intermezzi, a five-movement suite for two mezzo-sopranos and orchestra, based on Sørensen’s and Asmussen’s opera 'Under the Sky'.

”It reminds me of something I’ve never heard!” - such was the spontaneous reaction of the Norwegian composer Arne Nordheim upon hearing a work by Bent Sørensen. And it is not easy to imagine a more strangely to-the-point description of the ambiguous, almost paradoxical expressive idiom of this unique composer, who is without doubt the leading Danish composer of his generation.

Sørensen’s music is not recycled. In no way does it rely on the yellowing pages of history for its musical nourishment. His musical language is undeniably of the present day, both aesthetically and technically. The music does, however, appear to be pervaded with memories, wisdom of experience and old dreams, of the inevitability of transitoriness and parting. It is a flickering, glittering world where things seem to disappear at the slightest touch.

The moment something becomes tangible and recognizable, it dissolves, becomes obscured, or disappears. But this ghost-like indistinctness is nevertheless the work of an experienced illusionist: Perhaps Sørensen’s most singular talent is his ability to give voice to this indistinctness, to render it distinct and clear. Often he places very simple musical material inside an ingenious musical 'hall of mirrors' in which echoes, and echoes of echoes, spread like ripples in water. The quiet, smudged contours, which sound as though heard through falling rain or misted windows, are always drawn in minute, calligraphic detail.

Langgaard: Music of the Spheres

Langgaard, R:

Music of the Spheres, for soprano, chorus, orchestra and distant orchestra, BVN 128

Endens Tid (The End of Time), BVN 243

Fra Dybet (From the Deep), BVN 414

Inger Dam-Jensen (soprano), Hetna Regitze Bruun (mezzo-soprano), Johan Reuter (baritone) & Peter Lodahl (tenor)

Danish National Symphony Orchestra & Danish National Concert Choir, Thomas Dausgaard

Music of the Spheres is a symphonic work of great complexity, calling for a large orchestra, organ and choir, a supporting (distant) orchestra including a soprano voice, and a further piano on which the strings are played directly rather than via the keys.

For this new and important recording, Dausgaard couples Music of the Spheres with two later works by Langgaard - The Time of the End and From the Deep - bringing an overview to the composer’s music over a period of 35 years.

Thomas Dausgaard and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra will be performing the UK premiere of Music of the Spheres at this year’s Proms on 11th August.

“It's not great music, but it is startling for many of the effects it employs, using a huge orchestra with enormous restraint in a frieze-like construction juxtaposing mundane Romantic rhetoric with the textural and spatial ideas that attracted Ligeti's attention.” The Guardian, 5th August 2010 ***

“Langgaard worked with texture and colour, and the forms he used are static or repetitive rather than organic. Yet, for me, there’s a disquieting naivety about this piece. Thomas Dausgaard and his fine forces are undeniably ardent champions.” Sunday Times, 5th September 2010 ***

“Dausgaard draw[s] every subtlety from a score whose often hushed dynamic level does not preclude a wealth of textual and motivic detail” International Record Review, September 2010

“Amazing, sometimes banal but never dull.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2010 *****

“Dausgaard's interpretation, brought vividly to this year's Proms to much acclaim, accentuates the textural subtleties of the score in a vibrant recording that achieves amazing quietude...[From the Abyss] rounds out this superbly played and recorded disc splendidly. Highly recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2010

Asger Hamerik is still one of the far too often overlooked great Danish composers.

Dacapo has already introduced Hamerik to an audience through recordings of his complete symphonies and his Requiem.

These profound works are here being reissued in an exclusive 4 SACD boxed set as Dacapo did earlier this year with Rued Langgaard’s complete symphonies (SACD 6200001).

This is grand Late Romantic music in the style of Berlioz, Hamerik’s teacher, recorded by Thomas Dausgaard and Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra (Symphonies 1-6) and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Symphony no. 7 “Choral” and the Requiem).

“Dausgaard conducts with all the verve we expect from him, relishing the combination of late-Romantic lyricism and Berliozian instrumental dash. Top-notch sound from Dacapo makes this a highly enjoyable set.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2010

Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Vocal Ensemble & Danish National Choir, Thomas Dausgaard

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was an odd, lonely figure in Danish music. His 16 symphonies make up a thought-provoking, original contribution to the history of the symphony.

The last two symphonies are both brief, but are musically very different. In No. 15 we find modernist features, while No. 16 can be called a personal testament in the spirit of Romanticism.

The CD concludes with a couple of early orchestral pieces and three world premiere recordings of late works.

This is the final disc in Dacapo’s successful and highly acclaimed series of Langgaard’s symphonies recorded by Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard.
