Bent Sørensen: La Notte

Sørensen, B:

Sieben Sehnsüchte for violin and piano

Rolf Hind (piano) & David Alberman (violin)

The Masque of the Red Death for piano

Rolf Hind (piano)

Piano Concerto 'La Notte'

Rolf Hind (piano)

BBC Symphony Orchestra, Michael Schønwandt

These three works all are released here for the first time on CD. The music of Bent Sørensen has been highly praised by all the major classical music magazines, with BBC Music Magazine awarding 5 stars and ‘Choral & Song Choice’ for Sørensen’s Requiem (6220571) in October 2012.

Rolf Hind is an English pianist and has earned an enviable reputation as one of today’s foremost interpreters of new music. The pairing with the BBC SO gives this release a strong platfom in the UK market.

“In all three pieces I can imagine greater variety of pianistic colour and attack. Nevertheless, the performances are clearly admirably prepared, and recording quality and documentation are excellent.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2013

“First recordings of three works from the 1990s, each involving the piano — beautifully played by Hind — but linked in other ways.” Sunday Times, 14th April 2013

Nielsen: Saul & David

Johan Reuter (Saul), Ann Petersen (Mikal), Morten Staugaard (Samuel), Susanne Resmark (Witch of Endor), Leif Jone Ølberg (Abner), Signe Sneh Schreiber (Abishai), Niels-Jorgen Riis (David), Michael Kristensen (Jonathan)

The Royal Danish Orchestra & The Royal Danish Opera Chorus, Michael Schønwandt

This DVD presents a spectacular new production of Carl Nielsen's dramatic debut opera, Saul & David from 1901 - a production marking the Royal Danish Opera’s celebration of the composer's 150th anniversary in 2015.

King Saul, bitterly jealous of young David, who won the favour of the people by defeating the giant Goliath, is staged in a highly original fashion by acclaimed English director and Nielsen enthusiast David Pountney, who updates the Biblical story to our own time, lending it psychological and political undertones.

The performance is conducted by Nielsen expert Michael Schønwandt and presents an array of Denmark's leading singers with Johan Reuter in the demanding role of King Saul, Niels-Jørgen Riis as David and Ann Petersen as his beloved Mikal.

“Johan Reuter is overwhelmingly good in what may be the best role of his life.” Opernwelt

“The renowned Nielsen interpreter Michael Schønwandt conducted with great love for the music that never smothered it: drawing warm and polished playing from the orchestra, he gave the impression of really channeling and shaping the music as it pulsed through him” Opera Magazine

Total duration: 2h 12min (132 minutes)

Booklet essays by director David Pountney and Nielsen scholar Knud Ketting

“a riveting performance by Johan Reuter in both voice and acted intensity...Pountney's direction and the conducting of Michael Schonwandt help make much of characters who might easily remain sinecures...Orchestra and conductor unroll their home composer's score with richness and dexterity...Hugely recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2016

“Michael Schønwandt's expansive conducting conveys its epic scale and lyrical sweep…[Johann Reuter is] excellent here…his stage presence, arrogant yet vulnerable, is compelling. Niels-Jorgen Riis sings and portrays David more ardently than most…[and] Michael Kristensen makes a stronger than usual impression as the put-upon Jonathan…this is a strong performance which works well on screen.” BBC Music Magazine ****

Klenau: Symphony No. 9

Klenau: Symphony No. 9

Cornelia Ptassek (soprano), Susanne Resmark (alto), Michael Weinius (tenor) & Steffen Bruun (bass)

Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Michael Schønwandt

Paul von Klenau’s (1883-1946) grandiose Ninth Symphony in eight movements was composed in Copenhagen 1945 as his last major work; an extraordinary fusion of a Requiem with Latin text and a traditional symphony for orchestra, choir and four soloists. The manuscript then lay unknown for more than fifty years until it appeared in the 2001 discovery of a large collection of Klenau manuscripts in Vienna, and not until March 2014 – after a thorough editing by The Royal Library in Copenhagen – did it receive its first performance by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schønwandt. This world premiere recording presents the full symphony; a magnificent opus of both tonal, atonal and even twelve-tone passages, very far removed from the style that predominated in the post-Nielsen Danish music of the 1940s.

“Bravo to these musicians for giving the piece every chance. Excellent playing, good choral singing and excellent contributions from the inimitable Susanne Resmark…and open-voiced tenor Michael Weinius” Gramophone Magazine, July 2016

“full of terrific ideas throughout its long length in this premiere performance from Michael Schønwandt and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra with the Danish National Concert Choir and soloists” MusicWeb International, June 2016

Danish National Choirs, Phillip Faber, Michael Schønwandt, Susanne Wendt

Carl Nielsen’s large production of around 300 songs comes in many forms. In this collection we hear 25 choral versions of the most popular Nielsen songs like Den danske sang er en ung, blond pige and Solen er så rød, mor as well as more rarely heard or even unknown choral songs. Listen, for example, to the composer’s beautiful – but today entirely forgotten – proposal for a new Danish national anthem; a handful of fine pieces for male choir and not least a series of polyphonic songs for children’s and girls’ choir, including rare jewels and some of the most well-loved songs in Danish schools and homes today.

“[the Girls' Choir] is bright-sounding, alert and technically bang-on under its charismatic guiding light Philip Faber…the Childrens' and Junior choirs sound thrillingly open, a joyousness in their voices that suits Nielsen's musical intentions down to the ground” Gramophone Magazine, April 2016

Nielsen: Maskarade

Nielsen: Maskarade

Johan Reuter, Stephen Milling, Niels-Jørgen Riis, Dénise Beck, Anne Margrethe Dahl, Ditte Højgaard Andersen, Guido Paevatalu

Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Choir, Michael Schønwandt

Carl Nielsen's vivid comedy opera Maskarade has enjoyed a natural status as Denmark's national opera ever since its first performance at the Royal Danish Opera in 1906.

On this recording, Nielsen expert Michael Schønwandt leads a sparkling cast of today’s finest Nielsen singers and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra through the delightful yet stirring comedy plot.

Recorded in the ideal acoustic of DR Koncerthuset, this is the 21st century’s first studio recording of Nielsen’s much-loved opera, appropriately released to celebrate the Danish composer’s 150th anniversary.

“The mighty bass Stephen Milling catches the ageing paterfamilias Jeronimus's comically fallible humanity likeable…Denise Beck and Ditte Højgaard Andersen as love interests Leonora and her maid Pernille are excellent, as are the many character roles. Michael Schønwandt conducts with great detail and sweep.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2015

“Nielsen’s anniversary invites us to reassess the composer with new recordings, in this case a fourth – and successful – outing on disc for Maskarade...The new performance, like all previous rivals, builds on the strength of home casting at the work's alma mater, the Royal Danish Opera...there's a suitably towering comic monster performance from Stephen Milling.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2015

“When played and sung like this, by a cast, conductor and orchestra who clearly relish every bar, it is hard not to be swept along by the warmth and generosity of spirit of the music...All squeeze the maximum dramatic juice out of what the score gives them; they may be stock comic characters, but the feelings with which Nielsen invests them are real enough.” The Guardian, 16th September 2015 ***

“here’s a cast (led by Johan Reuter and Niels Jorgen Riis) whose singing brings the comedy to life under the expert baton of Michael Schonwandt. Enjoy two hours of top-notch light music and brush up your Danish in the process.” The Times, 17th July 2015 ****

Ruders: Selma Jezková

Ruders: Selma Jezková

An opera based on Lars von Trier's “Dancer in the Dark”

Ylva Kihlberg (Selma), Palle Knudsen (Bill), Hanne Fischer (Kathy), Guido Paevatalu (Norman/Guard 2), Gert Henning-Jensen (District Attorney/Guard 1) & Carl Philip Levin (Gene)

The Royal Danish Opera & The Royal Danish Orchestra, Michael Schønwandt

Poul Ruders' opera Selma Jezková (sung in English) is based on Lars von Trier's film Dancer in the Dark and follows the heart-wrenching story of Selma, a poor factory worker with failing eyesight who sacrifices her life to ensure that her son receives an eye operation.

The opera is a dark and compelling story of fate; a highly evocative and epic performance yet also intensely distilled with a duration of just 70 minutes. In this DVD production of the 2010 Copenhagen première performance, the forces of the Royal Danish Opera are directed by Kasper Holten and framed by Christian Lemmerz' grand Gothic set design.

Conductor Michael Schønwandt commands the podium and the demanding title role is sung by Ylva Kihlberg, to whom Poul Ruders has dedicated the role.

“Musically, the work is descended from Berg, in that its free tonality provides an expressive focus yet without the schematic framework becoming inflexible...The cast is dominated, as it needs to be, by Ylva Kihlberg's Selma: her dramatic soprano exudes fervency and commitment...Michael Schønwandt conducts with his customary flair...Indeed the whole production is a triumph of dramatic focus and concentration.” International Record Review, July 2011

The premiere production was a decided audience success and a more or less unanimous press acknowledged the music as original. “The first act works excellently. After this one would swear that Carl Nielsen was born to write opéra comique. So smooth, so dexterous, such a quick turn of phrase, such aptness in the dialogue, with fine phrases and droll ideas; equally felicitous in the treatment of the text, the singing roles, the instruments of the orchestra. In the craft of music, it is a fully-fledged master who holds the pen; one’s thoughts can only resort to Verdi in ‘Falstaff’ to find a parallel.” Nationaltidende (1906)
