Götterdämmerung: excerpts

Siegfried Idyll

"It will be no surprise to anyone who knows Schuricht's Bruckner that these are flowing, beautifully balanced, serious readings. I don't know any quite like them. As I listen to them, it seems to me that there is no other way to do justice to Wagner's noble genius. Whether it is in the intimate tenderness of the Siegfried Idyll as warm as Walter (but better proportioned) or Solti (but more relaxed), or the sheer luxury of the Tristan Prelude, this is exalted music-making." - American Record Guide

This assemblage of Wagner excerpts from the archives (XVI, the Schuricht Edition) of conductor Carl Schuricht (1880-1967) traverses sixteen years of work with the SouthWest German Radio Stuttgart, the earliest inscriptions being the 29 April 1950 Tristan Prelude; the latest the Parsifal Act I and Act III sequences from 17-19 March 1966. The Twilight of the Gods excerpts from 28 September 1955 are particularly powerful, with Siegfried’s Funeral March in towering motion against the Valhalla motif in the trumpets. The Rhine Journey is no less plastic and arched, with the vocal lines preserved right up to Brunnhilde’s high C from Zu Neuen Thaten.

"From the same day of recording comes the chamber version of A Siegfried Idyll, which permits the flute, oboe, and low horns immediacy of impact on the amblings of our Nibelungen hero. The Parsifal Act I Prelude is cast in the same expansive mold we hear in renditions by Schuricht’s contemporaries Klemperer, Knappertsbusch, Walter, and Furtwaengler. The Good Friday Spell (23 September 1954) from Parsifal projects a deeply burnished, rich ambiance, with the strings and winds in pungent, incisive form, the oboe ravishing. The Act III Finale lacks the chorus, but the alchemical mix of winds, horns, and harp is superbly magical. Schuricht’s is a lustrous Wagner, eminently vocalized in the instrumental renditions, and equally notable for the clarity of orchestral detail. Himmel hoch!" Gary Lemco on www.audaud.com

Beethoven:

Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92

Schumann:

Symphony No. 2 in C major, Op. 61

The charisma of Schuricht’s interpretation skills intensified in his old age, when he seemed to prevail over his physical handicaps through the sheer strength of his artistic presence alone. As a former member of the SDR Orchestra in Stuttgart said, »he understands how to transmit his musical intelligence, his skill and his interpretation of a work directly to the musicians with whom he is working

Schicksalslied, Op. 54

Nänie von Friedrich Schiller, für Chor und Orchester, Op. 82

Conductor Carl Schuricht is presented here in a program of Brahms masterworks that contrast darkness and light, the beauty of nature and beauty’s passing. From the exuberant Symphony No. 2 to the reflective sound-worlds of »Schicksalslied« and »Nänie« , Schuricht leads his Stuttgart ensembles with a clear understanding of Brahms’ intentions. For listeners unfamiliar with Brahms’ rare choral work »Nänie« , this is a recording to become acquainted with it’s treasures and cherish.

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Maria Stader (soprano), Hermann Prey (bass-baritone)

Stuttgart Vokalensemble, Frankfurt Choir, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Carl Schuricht

From the date of its premiere in 1868 to the present day, Brahms’ moving early masterwork has spoken to generations of listeners. The work, originally conceived as a memorial for the composer’s own mother, is addressed to the living, offer a message of consolation and hope. Few conductors have approached this oft too familiar score with the sense of awe and reverence as that of Schuricht. A very special dimension of this CD is the magisterial performance of a young Hermann Prey.

Haydn:

Symphony No. 95 in C minor

Symphony No. 100 in G major 'Military'

Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major, Hob. VIIb:2 (Op. 101)

It is true that Carl Schuricht was the supreme interpreter of German late Romanticism but his roots were to be found in the works of the Classical masters Haydn and Mozart. Long before the "historic performance practice" trend come into vogue, Schuricht crafted perfectly controlled, and balanced performances - allowing the genius of these Haydn masterworks to be experienced without excess or artifice.
