Schubert - Piano Works Volume 12

Schubert - Piano Works Volume 12

Schubert:

Piano Sonata No. 17 in D major, D850

Adagio and Rondo in E major D506

12 Valses Nobles, D969

With the 12th and final installment of his grand tour of the piano works of Franz Schubert, the internationally renowned pianist Gerhard Oppitz now concludes his journey. Included here are the Sonata in D Major, D. 850, the Rondo in E Major D 506 and the 12 Waltzes D 969. Gerhard Oppitz understanding of the musical depth of Schubert's creations is without peer, all the more effective for its unobtrusive understatement. The "heavenly lengths" of this composer are a challenge for some artists, who transform transcendence into tedium but not Gerhard Oppitz. Under his hands, he is able to draw out the narrative logic of each large-scale Sonata while engaging the smaller pieces for what they are: jewels of pianistic invention.

Schubert - Piano Works Volume 11

Schubert:

Piano Sonata No. 19 in C minor, D958

Adagio in D flat, D505

Hungarian Melody in B minor D817

Galop and 8 Ecossaises D735

10 Variations in F major for piano, D156 (1815)

Gerhard Oppitz has played all the sonatas of the Viennese master Schubert in the course of his explorations, but he also has taken up many of Schubert's smaller pieces for the piano, which are less frequently played in concert and are still largely unknown. Here, the composer creates a special intimacy with the listener in these sometimes almost improvised works that provide fascinating insights into Schubert's creative process.

This CD continues Oppitz's Schubertian dialogue through the juxtaposition of the composer's great late period Sonata D 958 with many smaller pieces, such as the 10 variations of 1815, written when Schubert was just 18 years of age.

Variations on Diabelli's Waltz, D718

13 Variations on a theme by Anselm Hüttenbrenner in A minor, D576

Piano Sonata No. 14 in A minor, D784

10th installment in Oppitz’s recordings of the complete piano works of Schubert.

Gerhard Oppitz has performed in major concert halls worldwide.

As a student of Wilhelm Kempff, and according to his own inner inclination, Gerhard Oppitz has been praised worldwide as a performer of Romantic piano works, especially those by German composers. He also loves to perform the large scale cyclical works such as Beethoven or Schubert on several consecutive evenings. "Variations" could be the theme of this 10th volume in his recordings of Schubert's piano works. It presents as it’s central work the “Wanderer Fantasy”, where in the second movement are a set of variations on the famous song "The Wanderer" D 489. Oppitz achieves here a momentous emotional climax in this performance. Also included is the comparably intense Piano Sonata D 784; these larger works perfectly frame to delightful sets of variations; the Variation on a Waltz by Diabelli, D 718 and the "Hüttenbrenner" Variations D 576.

Schubert:

Piano Sonata No. 9 in B major, D575

Piano Sonata No. 16 in A minor, D845

Gerhard Oppitz has a particular fondness for presenting cycles of the works of major composers and here continues his Schubert series: “….this imperious, no-nonsense German pianist bears down heavily on Schubert’s lyricism and vitality…..” Gramophone.

“Oppitz has [D845's] full measure, not only in its frequent dramatic moments but also in the delicacy of some of the variations...The best thing about his performances of both sonatas is that they focus the listener entirely on their musical and sonorous beauty, supported by good, natural recorded sound.” International Record Review, March 2011
