Andreas Bach (piano)

In the years since the acclaimed recordings made by the Hungarian pianist Zoltán Kocsis back in the 1980s and 90s, no single pianist has attempted to record a complete edition of Bartók’s works for solo piano! For a quarter of a century, no new comprehensive perspective on this multifaceted oeuvre has been cast, an important and varied, yet internally cohesive body of work that displays so many different aspects of Bartók’s creativity. This is exactly what the German pianist Andreas Bach has set out to achieve - "... to find the young Bartók in the late works as well as the late Bartók in the early works. And (...) create a recording that presents a Bartók different from those usually encountered and which are by contrast, ‘middle-of-the-road’. Emphasizing “not only the rhythmic and folkloric content, but also providing an opportunity to discover Bartók‘s harmonic thinking”, an aspect of the composer’s language that few fans had the opportunity to appreciate before.

Volume1 of this new complete edition presents individual works that Bartók composed in his mature, personal style, including the Sonata, the Sonatina, the Suite op. 14, and the 14 Bagatelles; folk music influences are present but only as distant references. The next 4 CDs will focus on the "Romantic Bartók” and will include his early works, compositions written early in his career and still showing influences of 19th century Romantic idiom. CD 5 "Bartók and Folk Music" is dedicated to his works, and arrangements most directly influenced by folk music. The remaining CDs (Vols. 6-8) are devoted to the major cycles "For Children" and "Mikrokosmos ".

Andreas Bach (piano)

With this latest release (volume 2 of a projected 5 volumes) of his recording of the complete piano works of Béla Bartók, Andreas Bach focuses on Bartók’s romantic roots; those pieces that originated in his early period, and based primarily on the German Romantic tradition. These include the Funeral March from “Kossuth”, arranged by Bartók himself for piano, the Rhapsodie Sz. 26, 2 Elegies and 4 Piano Pieces. Andreas Bach has quickly established himself as a masterful interpreter of Bartók‘s music, with enthusiastic reviews praising the edition‘s success: “... A project, that when complete, will be the most comprehensive presentation of Bartók‘s legacy as a keyboard composer ever available. (...) Of all the recordings and concert performances of these furious, earth-shattering, primitive works known to me, only my Philips recording with Zoltán Kocsis offers these fantastic keyboard scenes with comparable nuance, and sense of drama.” Klassik Heute)

Meta4

The Finnish string quartet Meta4 has now achieved international recognition and regularly plays on the great stages of the world. In their new album, featuring the first and fifth quartets of Béla Bartók, Meta4 turns once again – as a follow up to their hugely successful 2011 recording of Shostakovich quartets – to a program of 20th century masterpieces. There is little doubt that Bartók is among the boldest quartet composers since Beethoven. His irrepressible expression will meet with the equally distinctive style of the four Finns and leads to incredibly expressive, emotionally charged interpretations. The uncompromising musical standards offered by these musicians take hold of the capricious ideas and unorthodox forms of the Hungarian master to deliver what will most likely be the string quartet album of the year.

“Meta4 connect well with Bartok's sense of humour...The more Romantic First Quartet is lovingly indulged, occasionally with cosseting portamentos...The overall impression, performance-wise (and I mean this with a maximum of respect, even encouragement), is of works in progress.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2015

The Miraculous Mandarin, Op. 19, Sz. 73 (complete ballet)

arr. For two pianos by Bartók

Sonata for Two Pianos & Percussion, BB 115, Sz. 110

Ákos Hernádi (Piano); Károly Mocsári (Piano); Franz Lang (Percussion); Jochen Schorer (Percussion)

The current program provides a fascinating overview of Bartók's chamber music for multiple pianos. The composer's own arrangement of the searing, expressionist score for his ballet, "The Miraculous Mandarin" reveals the audacity of Bartók's creative vision with a clarity that is often lost in the popular orchestral version. This rare recording of the two piano version will delight Bartók fans everywhere. Next, the Hernádi/Mocsári Duo is joined by a pair of percussionist in a thrilling performance of the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. Arguably, one of the greatest chamber music pieces of the 20th century.

Tchaikovsky:

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23

Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, Ferdinand Leitner

Géza Anda (piano)

Géza Anda single-handedly helped the Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto attain a truly international breakthrough – in Salzburg in1952 -; this CD offers his first public performance of the work in 1950. This recording allows a fascinating insight into the beginnings of a lifelong passion and shows why Anda was predestined to become the paramount representative of this concerto. Even as a very young man, Anda had performed the Tchaikovsky first, but in later years this most famous of all piano concertos only sporadically appeared on his programs. This recording from 1973 documents a blissful evening; sound, touch and phrasing always remain flexible and differentiated with all the desire of overflowing – life-affirming gestures. A subtle, burnished tone of exquisite beauty and sublime serenity informs his interpretation of the Intermezzo in E flat major, Op 117, No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, performed by Anda as an encore following the Tchaikovsky Concerto, opening up the very poetic essence of this late Brahms work.
