Hänssler Classic is proud to announce the latest release from the phenomenally gifted young cellist, Johannes Moser. This new CD is the first in a series intended to document the period between Johannes Brahms' move to Vienna in 1869 and the musical innovations that culminated in Arnold Schoenberg's "Method of Composing with Twelve Tones…" in the 1920s. In addition to a compelling performance of Brahms' Cello Sonata in F Major Op. 99, Moser has also programmed the works of Brahms' nearly forgotten protégé Robert Fuchs and the WORLD PREMIERE recording of the Cello Sonata by Fuch's own pupil, Alexander Zemlinsky. This important new release will not only delight the casual listener with new and unfamiliar repertoire but will also introduce music lovers to an exciting and important period of musical creativity.

Kirchner, T:

8 Pieces for Cello and Piano, Op. 79

Martucci:

Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 52

Johannes Moser (cello) & Paul Rivinius (piano)

A winning programme of rarities and surprises, including a lyrical and neglected Cello Sonata by Martucci and miniatures by Kirchner, who was a piano virtuoso and gambling addict.

“Music for cello by Brahms's friends, placing the composer in context. Giuseppe Martucci… challenges Brahms on his own ground with a full-blown sonata. …this is an enjoyable piece, clearly influenced by Brahms but still genuinely inspired. Theodor Kirchner's... nicely played pieces are, in a sense, brief homages to Brahms without being imitative.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2009

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Among the major choral-orchestral works of the 19th century, Sir Roger Norrington and his former Orchestra, the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, have tackled over the years, now finally comes Brahms' "German Requiem." one of the most beautiful and popular sacred music works in the repertoire.

Brahms’ contemporaries, including his close friend Clara Schumann were moved with the score and were enthusiastic about it - and it has been a favorite with the general public ever since. Although Biblical texts are used, the piece is not in the standard church-liturgical tradition. It was Brahms‘personal response to "those who mourn"! The central idea of this masterpiece is the reality of human existence.

It is precisely this „earthly character“ that Roger Norrington uses to shape his interpretation

emphasizing the grave beautify of the music and not religious awe; in this, Norrington draws us close to the composer’s intentions. He is ably supported by soprano soloist Christina Landshamer, basso Florian Boesch, SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart and the NDR.

“Norrington's tempos have eased a little since his first, period instrument recording...but there is still something hair-shirtish about the interpretation...There is, however, much to admire in the reading, not least the ripe-toned choral singing, and the way it's captured by the wide-pan recording, enabling Brahms's gorgeous part-writing to be properly appreciated.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2015 ****

“Norrington has a knack of drawing out detail that other conductors overlook...[the choir] meet all the work's demands admirably, delicate or full-throated as required...the orchestra respond to their Conductor Laureate with enthusiastic subtlety. Fine soloists, too, with Florian Boesch conveying barely suppressed terror in his first solo.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2015

“Even now Brahms’s Requiem can be made to seem stodgy, but not in this superb account by Stuttgart forces under their former director. Whatever one thinks of Norrington’s insistence on vibrato-less strings, the effect here is to clear the air gloriously...The choral singing — cleansed and vivid — is wonderfully expressive.” Sunday Times, 15th March 2015

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Maria Stader (soprano), Hermann Prey (bass-baritone)

Stuttgart Vokalensemble, Frankfurt Choir, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Carl Schuricht

From the date of its premiere in 1868 to the present day, Brahms’ moving early masterwork has spoken to generations of listeners. The work, originally conceived as a memorial for the composer’s own mother, is addressed to the living, offer a message of consolation and hope. Few conductors have approached this oft too familiar score with the sense of awe and reverence as that of Schuricht. A very special dimension of this CD is the magisterial performance of a young Hermann Prey.

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Johannes Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem" is a work of profound reflection, presenting the composer‘s most personal beliefs in a timeless form, overcoming all boundaries of religions and confessions and nations. This "Requiem" is not based on the familiar text of the Catholic funeral mass, but is instead sensitively and knowledgably assembled from text from the Old and New Testaments by Brahms himself. Indeed, it was not his intention to pattern his Requiem after the Latin mass for the dead, nor to proclaim what he felt were false hopes for resurrection. Instead, “Ein deutsches Requiem” is a work of consolation for those left behind. This aspect is particularly emphasized in Helmuth Rilling’s moving interpretation. Donna Brown (soprano) and Gilles Cachemaille (baritone) are the outstanding vocal soloists, delivering well-profiled performances that are perfectly integrated into the overall balance of sound. Together with his regular collaborators, the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Rilling delivers a performance full of gravitas that effectively reconciles the themes of death and mourning with a transcendent sense of spiritual consolation with a sense of immediacy seldom encountered in other performances.

Intermezzi (3), Op. 117

Canon in F minor, Anh. III/2

Gavottes

Albumblatt, WoO

Sarabande in A Minor, WoO 5 posth.

Sophie-Mayuko Vetter (piano)

On this CD you will hear both previously unknown, first recordings of early works alongside well-known late Brahms masterworks. The Opera 117, 118 and 119 from the last years of the composer’s life are famous for their musical balance and quasi Zen-like distillation of the composer’s life experiences. Quite different are the small pieces from the Brahms‘early years: The Albumblatt in A Minor, was only discovered in 2012, a brief canon from 1864 shows the young composer’s mastery early in his career, while the Sarabande and Gavotte of 1855 were to be included in a planned suite.

This CD provides a very interesting collection of works matched with an equally intriguing interpretation! Sophie-Mayuko Vetter is one of the most remarkable and versatile young pianists. A regular guest on many international stages, she has performs an extensive repertoire ranging from early baroque to avant-garde. A perfect pianist and a sensitive musician is all that you need to characterize Sophie-Mayuko Vetter.
