Julian Gorus (piano)

This is the debut recording of the young Bulgarian virtuoso Julian Gorus. He brings a special Slavic sensitivity to the music of Liszt and this is a stunning new interpretation of the complete Années de Pèlerinage.

Liszt: Christus, S3

Liszt: Christus, S3

Andreas Schmidt (Baritone), Henriette Bonde-Hansen (Soprano), Iris Vermillion (Mezzo soprano), Michael Schade (Tenor)

Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart Gächinger Kantorei Choir, Cracow Chamber Choir, Helmuth Rilling

The complete work was first performed on 29 May 1873 in the Protestant church in Weimar, under the direction of the composer and in the presence of, among others, Liszts daughter Cosima and her second husband, Richard Wagner. The performers numbered three hundered.

During Liszt´s lifetime it was performed ten more times. But after 1914 it virtually disappeared from the repertoire.

This recording will provide a start towards restoring an important oratorio to the rightful status which it occupied once before, at the turn of the 20th century.

“ Christus is essentially a contemplative work and so could really be said to exist in a different timescale to most music. Much of the opening part, the 'Christmas Oratorio', uses very simple melody and harmony, and is studiously undramatic. Helmuth Rilling does well not to charge it with too much colour, and, if listened to as meditation rather than drama, what can seem static takes on a positive atmosphere as a group of long reflections on the Christmas events. This is a far cry from the sensational Liszt of the early virtuoso years, not yet reaching the terse, inward pieces of the last years. There's greater drama in the middle part, 'After Epiphany', especially in the superb scene of Christ walking on the water. Although there's still the suggestion that a wonder is being contemplated, Liszt stirs up a terrific storm. This part also includes the beautiful setting of the Beatitudes, sung by Andreas Schmidt with a degree of uncertainty which he entirely sheds when he comes to pronounce the sentences in Part 3 ('Passion and Resurrection') for the scene of the Agony in the Garden. The long Stabat mater is beautifully controlled by Rilling. His soloists support him well.
The recording does excellent justice to Liszt's wide-ranging orchestration.”

He has won many prizes and scholarships, including a silver medal in the International Vladimir Horowitz Piano Competition in Kiev. His Liszt recital includes Sonata in B minor and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.

“For [Zhang], Liszt is never a springboard for personal or preening excess, and even when you marvel at his velocity in the treacherous fugue, it is in the slow descending scale...and the glassy sighs and menaces of the retrospective coda that he creates a truly haunting and spacious impression...Zhang is a most serious artist” Gramophone Magazine, April 2011

Friedemann Eichhorn (piano) & Rolfe-Deiter Arens (violin)

Friedemann Eichhorn is a German violinist with the unique gift of projecting into different musical idioms. While generally not known as a composer of chamber music, Liszt wrote music for violin and piano throughout his career. While several pieces are arrangements of songs or works originally composed for piano solo, many are original compositions and explore the same stylistic explorations that can be found in Liszt's more famous compositions - including the use of folk materials, harmonic and melodic experimentations and cyclical forms.

“…the second Elegie and the Romance oubliée… best suit violinist Friedemann Eichhorn, the slight graininess in his tone never oversweetening Liszt's potent austerity; his tuning, too, is impeccable.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009

This CD completes this set of all Liszt’s works for violin and piano. Included are Rapsodie hongroise XII, Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth and Zwei Walzer. The first volume was well received; “..his mix of technical fireworks with honey and cream tones fills the works with understanding. Wonderfully alive accompaniments from Rolf-Dieter Arens.” Yorkshire Post

“Eichhorn and Arens...transcend any pedagogical preconceptions in meticulously prepared performances that are completey attuned to Liszt's idiom, flamboyant (but never flashy) when they need to be, and giving due weight to the introspective side of Liszt's multifaceted genius.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2011

André Watts (piano)

Andre Watts was born in 1946 and made his concert debut when he was only 9 years old. At the age of 16, Leonard Bernstein asked him to perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1. Bernstein became Watts’ mentor. This all-Liszt recital, recorded in 1986, demonstrates what a great musician and breathtaking virtuoso he is.

“This remarkable pianist, born in 1946, is seldom heard in concert now, but this recital is treasurable. His Liszt is spacious, almost leisurely, and intensely poetic.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2012 ****

Bach Illuminationes

Bach Illuminationes

Transcriptions

Angelika Nebel (piano)

With her first critically acclaimed recording for hänssler CLASSIC, "Metamorphosis", pianist Angelika Nebel took an in-depth look at piano arrangements of works by Johann Sebastian Bach. In her new recording "Illuminationes", she now traverses the full spectrum of transcriptions, from the 19th and 20th centuries, straight through to the 21st century as well as those from many different countries, for a vision of Bach’s music that is international and timeless; the Soul encountered through the prism of these sacred piano meditations.

In addition to well-known composers and arrangers of Bach such as Franz Liszt, Dmitri Kabalevsky and Egon Petri, there are also some unknown composers. Nevertheless, their transcriptions are worthy for inclusion and offer further evidence of Bach’s tremendous compositional stature. Perhaps, it is their own humility that is so very evident as it is with Bach and “his” pianist, Angelika Nebel?

A very special boxed set documenting the artistry of one of the 20th century’s greatest conductors. Includes a special bonus disc including Schuricht in rehearsal.
