Mendelssohn & Beethoven: Piano Trios

Mendelssohn & Beethoven: Piano Trios

Beethoven:

Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 1 No. 3

Mendelssohn:

Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49

Josef Suk (violin), János Starker (cello), Rudolf Buchbinder (piano)

Josef Suk, János Starker and Rudolf Buchbinder made guest appearance at the Schwetzingen SWRFestival in 1973 – three internationally known, even famous presented two of the most celebrated works of the piano trio repertoire. Suk and Starker had previously enjoyed great success in the 1960s as a piano trio together with pianist Julius Katchen, prior to his death in 1969. For this concert from May 1973, the two experienced instrumentalists chose the then only 27-year-old Rudolf Buchbinder as their pianist. Their decision has become one of the great moments of chamber music-making, full of sensitive – and when necessary – forceful music-making. This is also a fitting tribute to the late cellist János Starker, whom we lost last year.

“Suk's persuasive tone, Starker's fathomless poetry and Buchbinder's brilliance and acuity make a vivid blend in two favourite trios. These live performances offer founts of insight, beauty and conviction.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2014 ****

Mendelssohn:

String Symphony No. 11 in F major

Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 'Scottish'

The Heidelberg Sinfoniker and Thomas Fey have become well known for their critically acclaimed Haydn recordings. The ensemble have decided that 2009 will be their personal “Mendelssohn Year” and are serving his music with a series of new recordings of the complete symphonies.

“Thomas Fey and his eagerly responsive Heidelberg orchestra cleave closely to the composer's prescribed tempi in all four movements [of the Scottish]. The upshot, with a lean, athletic 'period' sonority and sparing use of rubato, is virtually the swiftest, certainly the most abrasive Scottish on disc” Gramophone Magazine, June 2010

Mendelssohn: Der Onkel aus Boston

Mendelssohn: Der Onkel aus Boston

Carsten Süss (Tenor), Lothar Odinius (Tenor), Kate Royal (Soprano), István Kovács (Bass), Bernd Valentin (Baritone), Andreas Daum (Bass)

Stuttgart Bach Collegium, Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart, Helmuth Rilling

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was one of the great child prodigies of music history. His immortal Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture was written at the age of 17, but this long-lost masterpiece was created three years earlier. Written when Mendelssohn was 14, Der Onkel aus Boston, oder Die beiden Neffen ("The Uncle from Boston, or The Two Nephews") is a full-length, three-act comic opera displaying staggering skill and talent. The famed conductor and musicologist Helmut Rilling discovered the score in Mendelssohn’s handwriting in the Berlin State Library. Rilling prepared the work and gave the first belated public performance in Essen, Germany on October 3, 2004. He then brought it to the Oregon Bach Festival for the American premiere on July 3, 2005.

“Helmut Rilling’s fine sense of style makes this recording immediately accessible, with tempos that suit the music quite well. At the same time, his deft handling of the orchestra contributes another dimension to this score.” Opera Today

“Among the singers, Kate Royal stands out for the warmth of her characterisation in the central soprano role; but the entire cast seems to have thrown itself into the project with enthusiasm.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2005
