Poulenc: Stabat Mater & Les Biches

Poulenc: Stabat Mater & Les Biches

Poulenc:

Stabat mater

Les Biches

Marlis Petersen (soprano)

Stuttgart Southwest Radio Vocal Ensemble, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, North German Radio Chorus, Stéphane Denève

This recording marks the debut recording of the new principal conductor of the RSO Stuttgart, Stéphane Denève.

He has achieved some fantastic reviews here in the UK so we welcome him to the Haenssler label with open arms! The release presents a well-balanced program which shows both sides of Poulenc ’s compositions.

The recording has excellent artists including soprano Marlis Petersen who is a regular guest on the Metropolitan Opera, and is accompanied by the SWR Vokalensemble, and the NDR Choir Poulenc’s Stabat mater is one of the greatest sacred choral works of the 20th century and is released at a perfect time of year.

“Monk and man-about-town: both sides of Poulenc's complex personality are represented. Deneve conducts idiomatically, and his sharp, perky account of the ballet Les Biches is particularly relishable.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ****

“Sensuous fervour contrasts with carefree elegance and erotic urbanity in this disc that represents the composer’s two extremes” Financial Times, 30th March 2013

“Profundity that's usualy convinced through an elegant lightest touch benefits from Stéphane Denève's heavier hand and more formidable utterance.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2013

“This new version from Stéphan Denève with soprano Marlis Peterson, NDR Chorus, the SWR Vokalensemble and the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra is one of rare beauty: an exceptionally refined performance and also a very moving one that instantly heads towards the top of any list of recommendations.” International Record Review

“Denève’s perfomance [of the Stabat Mater] will leave even atheists and agnostics rheumy-eyed.” The Arts Desk, 15th June 2013

Knabenchor Capella Voca, Eckhard Weyand

Musical and artistic success depends to a great degree on the ability of all those involved to work together harmoniously, in every sense of the word. At the same time, the diversity and individuality of each member of an ensemble needs to be taken into account and nurtured.

These are the guidelines which the founder of the boys' choir and present choir director of capella vocalis, Eckhard Weyand, has adopted. The success of his concept is demonstrated by numerous concerts both at home and abroad and the way in which the choir has rapidly built up a reputation since it was founded.

Following on from the ensemble's debut "Kein schöner Land", released on hänssler CLASSIC (98.360), here is another CD featuring the boys' choir singing sacred choral works and entitled Cantate Domino.

Debussy, Poulenc, Ravel & Francaix: Piano Concertos

Debussy, Poulenc, Ravel & Francaix: Piano Concertos

Debussy:

Fantasie for piano and orchestra

Françaix:

Piano Concertino in F major

Poulenc:

Piano Concerto

Ravel:

Piano Concerto in G major

A great program featuring the largely neglected piano concertos from some famous composers active in France between 1890 and 1951. Debussy's "Fantaisie" was created in a period of change, exploring how the piano could become a voice in the orchestra.

After an altercation with the work NOT being played at its scheduled 1890 premiere, the Fantasie had to wait until after Debussy's death for its first performance and is seldom heard in the concert hall today.

The contrast with the late romantic Debussy work, Ravel is represented with the bright, humorous G Major Concerto. Poulenc's Piano Concerto is a jewel of sounds and colors, yet still stands in the shadow of his Concerto for Two Pianos. Finally, there is Jean Françaix’s Concertino, composed for a short, witty ten-minute film. Charm and wit, and all the corresponding range of moods are at Florian Uhlig’s command; the result is an entertaining and musically ravishing CD.

“Debussy's unjustly-dismissed Fantasie and Francaix's pithy Concertino are the highlights of this programme, superbly interpreted by Florian Uhlig.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2013 ****

“What an enticing programme this is...Uhlig proves a compelling advocate and the winds of the accompanying orchestra seem to gain in confidence as the work progresses...The über-compact Françaix Concertino is perhaps the highlight here, Uhlig and the orchestra vibrantly capturing the work's myriad moods, culminating in a rip-roaring finale.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2013

Les Ballets Russes Vol. 2

Les Ballets Russes Vol. 2

Poulenc:

Les Biches

Ravel:

Daphnis et Chloé

EuropaChorAkademie, Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Michael Gielen, Marcello Viotti

Maurice Ravel was the first French composer who received a commission from Diaghilev. "Daphnis et Chloé" is most often performed today mostly in the form of the two Suites, here thiis masterpiece is presented in its full choreographic form. Also included is Francis Poulencs " Les biches ." Poulenc's score is the backdrop for a series of amorous tableau between three muscle men and twelve excited young girls. His colorful and creative score (one of his finest) is a stylistic romp, drawing freely on everything from Mozart to Stravinsky, Folksong and Jazz, with even a little Baroque finesse thrown into the mix for good measure!

“…Ravel's radiantly magical Daphnis et Chloé complete, in a glowing, ecstatic choral performance, with a glorious "Daybreak" and a thrilling closing "Danse générale". Its coupling is Poulenc's witty Les Biches ("girls of independent spirit and virtue"), and its catchily audacious opening trumpet theme and luscious Adagietto are part of a suite full of piquantly affecting nostalgia and sparkle. ...played with spirited insouciance and plangent lyricism.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2008
