Helmuth Rilling conducts Bruckner

Helmuth Rilling conducts Bruckner

Bruckner:

Te Deum in C major, WAB 45

Psalm 150, for Soprano, Chorus and Orchestra

Mass No. 2 in E minor

Bruckner's career as a composer began with writing music for the church. Coming from humble rural origins, Bruckner would receive most of his musical education in monasteries, where he often worked as a teacher and organist. It wasn’t until the composition of the Mass in D Minor (1864), written when the composer was 40, that we begin to glimpse what would become his mature style.

This CD brings together works from Bruckner‘s late period - the Mass in E minor, originally composed in 1866 is heard here in the revised version for choir and brass of 1882 - perhaps his most symphonic Mass of all. Also on the program is his setting of the 150th

Psalm (1892). Written on commission for to provide a festive hymn to celebrate the opening of the exposition Internationale Ausstellung für Musik und Theatherwesen, it is one of his most important works, and as with the Te Deum (1884/85), an expansive and sonorous score.

Helmuth Rilling leads his Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, the Gächinger choir and four outstanding soloists: Pamela Coburn, Ingeborg Danz, Christian Elsner and Hans-Josef Selig in moving performances of Bruckner’s sacred works, bridging the gap between symphonic and sacred music, connecting these works both to the glorious traditions they sprang from to the bold new directions they would lead.

Beethoven: Missa Solemnis in D major, Op. 123

Beethoven: Missa Solemnis in D major, Op. 123

Pamela Coburn (soprano), Florence Quivar (alto), Aldo Baldin (tenor), Andreas Schmidt (bass)

Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Helmuth Rilling

Beethoven's sacred masterpiece, the Missa Solemnis, has thrilled audiences with its monumental splendor and grandeur of vision since its premiere. Even the master himself described his Mass as "the greatest work that I have written so far." And the unusually long duration of the works evolution – originally intended for the occasion of the appointment of the Archduke Rudolph of Austria to the Cardinal Archbishop of Olomouc in June 1819 to the score’s completion in March 1823 - is external evidence of the extraordinary commitment of the intensity the composer’s effort.

The Mass reveals Beethoven at the height of his powers and Helmuth Rilling, the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the outstanding quartet of vocal soloists have achieved world-wide acclaimed in producing a reference recording of this great masterpiece, which is now available once again in a new edition as part of the “Great Choral Works” series at a special price!

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Johannes Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem" is a work of profound reflection, presenting the composer‘s most personal beliefs in a timeless form, overcoming all boundaries of religions and confessions and nations. This "Requiem" is not based on the familiar text of the Catholic funeral mass, but is instead sensitively and knowledgably assembled from text from the Old and New Testaments by Brahms himself. Indeed, it was not his intention to pattern his Requiem after the Latin mass for the dead, nor to proclaim what he felt were false hopes for resurrection. Instead, “Ein deutsches Requiem” is a work of consolation for those left behind. This aspect is particularly emphasized in Helmuth Rilling’s moving interpretation. Donna Brown (soprano) and Gilles Cachemaille (baritone) are the outstanding vocal soloists, delivering well-profiled performances that are perfectly integrated into the overall balance of sound. Together with his regular collaborators, the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Rilling delivers a performance full of gravitas that effectively reconciles the themes of death and mourning with a transcendent sense of spiritual consolation with a sense of immediacy seldom encountered in other performances.

Handel: Messiah

Handel: Messiah

German version

Donna Brown (soprano), Cornelia Kallisch (mezzosoprano), Roberto Saccà (tenor) & Alastair Miles (bass)

Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart & Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Helmuth Rilling

This recording of Mozart’s edition of The Messiah conducted by Helmuth Rilling is one of the most thrilling interpretations of this rare work.

Helmuth Rilling has enjoyed an extraordinary career and earned a plethora of awards, most recently the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize in 2011 and the Martin Luther Medal in 2012. Now over 80 years old, he continues to be internationally active as a conductor and a teacher.

Mozart re orchestrated Händel’s score and re visited several arias to adapt the work to the changing tastes of Viennese Classics, rendering this not only a brilliant work in it’s own right, but an example of how Mozart embraced his Baroque predecessors.

“Any Handel enthusiast will want to have several versions of the original to correspond with at least some of the many composer’s own variants, but they should also have at least one recording of Mozart’s arrangement as a supplement. This recording would be a very satisfactory way of achieving that, as well as giving considerable pleasure to the non-specialist.” MusicWeb International, 28th November 2013

Honegger: Jeanne d'Arc au bucher

Honegger: Jeanne d'Arc au bucher

Knabenchor Collegium iuvenum Stuttgart, Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart, Radiosinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, Helmuth Rilling

The most recent recording from Helmuth Rilling and his Stuttgart Ensembles.

Sung in the original French.

Compelling interpretation of a unique work.

A publication of one of the Great Vocal Works.

In the series of great oratorios that Helmuth Rilling has devoted his life to recording, such a seminal work like Arthur Honegger's dramatic oratorio "Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher", composed in 1935 is not missing. This 2011 recording shines with an outstanding team of both outstanding singers and choirs. They play a major role in the work’s structure, commenting on the story and the experiences of Jeanne.

The text comes from the French poet Paul Claudel. He and the composer were made for each other. They created a folk play, wherein the words and music stand equally side by side; the choir and rich colorful orchestrations are in perfect balance with the spoken word. It is always only a small step from medieval naivety to modern monumentalism, a step which Honegger makes masterfully and effectively.

“Rilling captures the shifting moods - passion, lyricism, vulgarity, suffering - with superb elan. If Joan's notated spoken interpretations are not always precisely in place, that's a small price to pay.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2013 *****

“Rilling handles most of the score very well. He imparts colour and liveliness to Scene VIII, parts of which are the weaker passages in the score...He obtains very good, incisive playing from the orchestra and the adult choir sings admirably. So too does the children’s choir, who do well in Scene IX, sounding like cultivated urchins” MusicWeb International, 11th February 2014
