Already at its 9th installment, Florian Uhlig continues his explorations as he draws near the conclusion of the first truly complete edition of the two-handed piano music of Robert Schumann.

With the Kinderszenen op.15 and the Novelletten op.21, as well as hitherto largely neglected contemporaneous pieces, Uhlig explores the musical relationship of Robert and Clara. This most famous of musical couplings was of course - gorgeous! Hardly any other pianist has such a feeling for the hidden undercurrents of Schumann’s scores, and no other pianist can send the sparks flying from the surface of Schumann's music with as much enthusiasm.

A true discovery for the Schumann connoisseur. Joachim Draheim’s entertaining booklet notes are once again a treasure trove of knowledge that will delight both the Schumann scholar and the casual listener.

Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6

With the 8th installment of the first true integral recording of Schumann's works for solo piano, Florian Uhlig reaches the midway point of his widely acclaimed and much admired project. That Schumann deserve such a presentation, is undisputed, and by organizing each installment by musical themes, allows for both a more accessible and representative immersion into the world of the composer’s thoughts and feelings.

This new CD deals with the dual nature of the composer and writer: It finds its finest expression in the "Davidsbündlertänze" (1st version, Op. 6), in the idea of Davidsbündler in which different views on art mint in the figures Florestan and Eusebius which are also liable for the individual pieces of this cycle. The typical romantic play of rubrics, musical ciphers and pseudonyms can also be found in the "Carnaval" Op. 9 – a work which Schumann himself felt was too difficult to be performed and understood.

Together with these two great piano cycles, Florian Uhlig has collected some related miniatures that either Schumann composed and later rejected, or for one reason or another was never included in subsequent printed editions. Among these are at least three premiere recordings. That Florian Uhlig convincingly masters these emotionally complex works in both technical and expressive terms requires no further mention. Once again, he has assembled a CD program that clearly sets itself apart from other typical recitals.

“Uhlig, now well into his complete Schumann cycle, is a musician to his fingertips, with a sense of style and an affinity for the piano so natural that one forgets all about technique. Melodically, he could tell many singers a thing or two about inflection, and his buoyant rhythmic profiles and clarity of phrasing are blessedly free from the tyranny of meter…the seldom heard miscellaneous pieces, by contrast, are quite outstandingly well done” BBC Music Magazine, November 2015

Just last year, Florian Uhlig‘s recording of French Piano Concertos created a sensation. Though originally conceived as a respite from his ongoing project to record the first, truly complete edition of the piano works of Robert Schumann, Florian Uhlig’s excursion into late 19th and 20th century French repertoire demonstrated that he has a knack for the brilliant, urbane sound-world of the great French composers.

This year, Uhlig continues his explorations in this new recording of the piano works of Maurice Ravel. Ravel's piano music is perhaps the most concentrated corpus of music ever produced by a major composer. Despite their modest dimensions (the complete oeuvre can be performed in just over 2 hours), each composition sets out to achieve something new, shaping the genre to achieve works of consummate originality. And no one surpasses Florian Uhlig in delivering performances that allow all the fascinating, ecstatic virtuosity of this music to shine.

“Technically, this is playing of the highest order. Florian Uhlig has fingers to die for, and one of the advantages of this is that he has the confidence to use the sustaining pedal only when it's really called for. Time and again, I was stunned by the clarity and brilliance of passages that too often pass in a hopeful mush.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2014 ****

Volume 7 of what will become the first truly complete recording of Schumann's piano works presents a hitherto underexposed aspect of his work: those compositions in which he deals with counterpoint. That these pieces are no more dry exercises in fugue becomes more than clear when listening to these two CDs.

In his “contrapuntal” works Schumann blends a rigorous style with the Romantic characterpiece in a harmonious way. The studies for the pedal piano are a particularly clear example of how he adapted a Romantic tone to a fugal composition: melancholy, graceful, lyrical and flowing –played here in an arrangement for piano two hands by Florian Uhlig. On this program, there are numerous surprising pieces which help to provide a truly complete overall view of Schumann’s genius in a most beautiful way.

“Uhlig tackles all of this challenging repertoire with empathy and finesse. Even intellectual studies and student efforts emerge from his hands as expressive music first and foremost. The voicing is clear, the tone rich and energetic, the feel for nuance attuned with razor-sharp intuition.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2014 ****

“Uhlig is recording Schumann’s complete oeuvre for piano, and he means every note...Uhlig offers his own compelling two-hand reduction of the Op 56 Studies and Op 58 Sketches for pedal-piano (a piano with quasi-organ pedals).” Sunday Times, 27th April 2014

This release marks the sixth volume of the complete recordings of Schumann’s piano works.

“Uhlig's playing is by turns raptly beautiful and full of energy...He shows us just how Schumann's affection for his children was reflected in empathetic creations that cede no musical instpiration to the relative simplicity of the technique required to play them...This recording is not only instructive, it's a treasure trove of gorgeous music.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2014 ****

Penderecki: Piano Concerto 'Resurrection'

Penderecki: Piano Concerto 'Resurrection'

Florian Uhlig (piano)

Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw, Lukasz Borowicz

Only recently has Krzysztof Penderecki turned to the piano as a solo instrument. The first sketches for this concerto were made in 2001 and had a lighter character, similar to his Capriccio for Violin and Orchestra. Since the work was scheduled to be premiered in New York following the attack on the World Trade Center, Penderecki decided to present a much more serious work. The work is conceived in a broad formal layout reminiscent of a Mahler symphony transformed into a piano concerto. The work’s title "Resurrection" was also conceived as a response to the events of September 11th, 2001. But this is not a resurrection in the religious sense; rather the title refers to the universal human desire for a fresh start, for a new birth. To underscore this idea, the composer employs a pealing of bells at the work’s climax. In 2007, Penderecki’s score underwent a major revision and it is this even longer version that is performed on this recording.

Florian Uhlig has often played the concerto both under the direction of Penderecki himself as well as with other conductors throughout the world. This recording is particularly close to his heart.

“The performance itself has all the necessary gusto and flamboyance. The new ending does little or nothing to tone down the aggressive exuberance of the original, an American commission which while in progress turned (it would appear) into a defiant riposte to the horrors of 9/11” Gramophone Magazine, October 2013

“Uhlig's performance has all the virtuosic, staminal and expressive necessaries and more besides, and his substantial orchestral support is equally, unflaggingly impressive.” MusicWeb International, 27th September 2013

Debussy, Poulenc, Ravel & Francaix: Piano Concertos

Debussy, Poulenc, Ravel & Francaix: Piano Concertos

Debussy:

Fantasie for piano and orchestra

Françaix:

Piano Concertino in F major

Poulenc:

Piano Concerto

Ravel:

Piano Concerto in G major

A great program featuring the largely neglected piano concertos from some famous composers active in France between 1890 and 1951. Debussy's "Fantaisie" was created in a period of change, exploring how the piano could become a voice in the orchestra.

After an altercation with the work NOT being played at its scheduled 1890 premiere, the Fantasie had to wait until after Debussy's death for its first performance and is seldom heard in the concert hall today.

The contrast with the late romantic Debussy work, Ravel is represented with the bright, humorous G Major Concerto. Poulenc's Piano Concerto is a jewel of sounds and colors, yet still stands in the shadow of his Concerto for Two Pianos. Finally, there is Jean Françaix’s Concertino, composed for a short, witty ten-minute film. Charm and wit, and all the corresponding range of moods are at Florian Uhlig’s command; the result is an entertaining and musically ravishing CD.

“Debussy's unjustly-dismissed Fantasie and Francaix's pithy Concertino are the highlights of this programme, superbly interpreted by Florian Uhlig.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2013 ****

“What an enticing programme this is...Uhlig proves a compelling advocate and the winds of the accompanying orchestra seem to gain in confidence as the work progresses...The über-compact Françaix Concertino is perhaps the highlight here, Uhlig and the orchestra vibrantly capturing the work's myriad moods, culminating in a rip-roaring finale.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2013

Schumann & His Daughters

Three Sonatas for the Young, Op. 118

Wiegenliedchen, Op. 124 No. 6

Supplement to Op. 68

Birthday Album for Marie

Schlummerlied, Op. 124 No. 16

Robert and Clara Schumann were certainly exceptional parents - not just by the standards of the 19th century. Especially striking was how much time Robert devoted to his daughter Marie, their firstborn. Marie, Elise and Julie were the daughters for whom Schumann composed these little pieces and with whom he also made music; and these are NOT “childish” pieces. This CD is a delightful overview of the pieces and little melodies that Schumann produced with and for his girls and practically brings to life again the spirit of the Schumann household. As might be expected, a number of first recordings are represented on this CD.

“Uhlig has come up with a delightful concept for its fifth volume: music that Schumann wrote for his three eldest daughters...Uhlig's playing ranges from the absolutely excellent to the slightly dutiful, as is perhaps inevitable in such a comprehensive series.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2013 ****

“This is a fascinating disc to dip into...Uhlig’s playing is sublime – incredibly witty and attentive to detail, though never to the detriment of the music’s flow. Nicely recorded too, with interesting sleeve notes.” The Arts Desk, 18th May 2013

The entire production has been supervised by Schumann expert Joachim Draheim.
