“There are some fine songs here. I was glad… to be reminded what a good composer Delibes is, and to be introduced to Lecocq's wonderfully witty settings of La Fontaine. The actual piano sound is for me a touch prosaic at times, but this is compensated by John Mark Ainsley's absolute control and superb diction... A disc to treasure.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2006 *****

“There's a high standard of singing throughout and… Geraldine McGreevy offers delicacy, shape and direction, combined with an intelligent variety of tone, and Christopher Maltman's more forthright approach gives impetus to 'Le voyageur' and 'Prison'. Though her tone is a touch mature, Jennifer Smith is able to draw on the warm colours of her voice for the late cycle Le jardin clos (1914), a sombre, understated piece that emphasises the oblique, unpredictable harmony of the composer's final period.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2005 ****

“Volume 2 of Hyperion's superb Fauré song series takes its theme from Clair de lune and an idealised landscape peopled with dreaming birds and sobbing fountains. It follows the composer from youth to old age, from the young charmer to the mature master to the inscrutable sage, imaginatively side-stepping all possible monotony.
Fauré's dream world is a mirror of an occasionally innocent nature that received too many cruel knocks, reflected in music of light and darkness, courage and despair. All the singers involved in this ideally presented and recorded offering perform with a special ardour and commitment; Graham Johnson is, as always, a matchless partner and commentator.”

L'horizon chimérique, Op. 118

Felicity Lott, Jennifer Smith, Geraldine McGreevy (sopranos), Stella Doufexis (mezzo), John Mark Ainsley (tenor), Christopher Maltman, Stephen Varcoe (baritones), Graham Johnson (piano)

“Few singers would give over a whole evening to Fauré's songs on the concert platform, and choosing a way of presenting them on disc obviously poses problems. Previous sets had all the songs in chronological order; others chose poets or moods: Graham Johnson and company have begun with songs about water. This means a lot of dreaming and melancholy, whether in Gautier's Chanson du pêcheur ('Ma belle amie est morte', also set by Berlioz), or Richepin's Aucimitière. The latter is given a most beautiful rendition by John Mark Ainsley, who otherwise only sings on two tracks, with Jennifer Smith in the sentimental Pleurs d'or, and the homage to Venice and its lovers in Marc Monnier's Barcarolle.
Three cycles are the main items here. Felicity Lott sings the Cinq Mélodies de Venise, which includes some of Fauré's best-known songs, 'Mandoline', 'En sourdine' and 'Green'. She brings to bear on them a lifetime's devotion to French song. Her other contribution is Au bordde l'eau, to a poem by Sully-Prudhomme. This is made to sound very sad; taken faster it can be quite merry; it's a celebration of love, as well as a meditation on the passing of time.
Stephen Varcoe sings Mirages, Fauré's penultimate cycle (1919). As Graham Johnson writes in his fascinating notes, these poems by Brimont permitted Fauré 'uneventful passion'. Christopher Maltman is the other featured singer, in five separate songs and L'horizon chimérique. All the performances are elegant and well-balanced, but one misses the extra slight note of acid that native French singers bring to Fauré's songs.
Hyperion's sound is impeccable and in both his playing and accompanying essay, Graham Johnson penetrates to the heart of one of music's most subtle and enigmatic geniuses.”

La dernière valse

Dame Felicity Lott (soprano), Susan Bickley (mezzo soprano), Ian Bostridge (tenor), Stephen Varcoe (baritone)

The London Schubert Chorale, Stephen Layton

“The two cycles, Douze rondels and Etudes latines, are linked by a common fascination with the past.
The Douze rondels were composed to poems in a medieval metre, which allowed Hahn to try his hand at pastiche madrigals and courtly ballads.
The Etudes latines cast their gaze back still further in time to Classical antiquity. For Hahn, that era seemed to represent the ultimate in purity and sensuality rolled into one. This collection of 10 songs is a real discovery and rivals late Fauré, both in its refinement and mesmerising simplicity of utterance. Apart from a few moments when one would like a more substantial tone, Stephen Varcoe's light baritone suits Hahn very well and he's a refreshingly unaffected interpreter, who sings with grace and feeling. Susan Bickley is better at the larger canvas of a piece like Quand la nuit n'est pas étoilée than the more intimate songs but the most celebrated pair of all Hahn's mélodies goes to Dame Felicity Lott, whose sympathy for the French style could have no happier outlet. Both Si mes vers avaient desailes and L'heure exquise are included here, the latter if not an hour, then at least two and a half minutes that are truly exquisite. They are both beautifully sung and are undisturbed by the discomfort around the top of the stave that sometimes mars Lott's singing elsewhere. At the end, she offers four operetta solos as an encore. Graham Johnson's accompaniments are as sensitive as ever. The piano could have been placed a little closer, but the voices have been well captured.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“What treasures are here … The two discs provide an unmissable opportunity to explore a composer who is underrated and overlooked perhaps because he was too modest about himself. There are melodies here which Massenet, Debussy, Fauré and Ravel would have been proud to call their own. No one can fail to have their musical horizon broadened by these discs, which will assuredly come high among my Records of the Year, any year” Sunday Telegraph

Charles Gounod - Songs

Charles Gounod - Songs

Gounod:

Biondina and other songs

Dame Felicity Lott (soprano), Ann Murray (mezzo soprano), Anthony Rolfe Johnson (tenor), Graham Johnson (piano)

“This well-filled two-CD set is surely the most wide-ranging single issue of Gounod's mélodies.
The first of the discs confirms the commonly held view of Gounod. Almost without exception the songs are pleasing and sentimental, a sweetly scented posy of hymns to flowers, of rêveries and serenades. The selection includes two settings of poems that Berlioz had used in Les nuits d'été, plumbing the depths of the poetry, where Gounod is content to skim across the surface.
In chronological order, the songs show how little Gounod's music deepened, but also how evergreen was his inspiration in melody and harmony.
To turn to the second disc is to have all your prejudices overturned. This comprises non- French settings, for which Gounod dons first Italian garb for the song cycle Biondina, and then English for a group of ten songs written during his stay in London in the 1870s. The Italian cycle is a delight. It would be impossible to guess the composer, as Gounod exchanges his customary flowing themes and rippling arpeggios for an ardent, Tosti-like vocal line over dry staccato chords.
Anthony Rolfe Johnson catches its mix of sunny lyricism and Gallic sensitivity to perfection.
All three singers are on their best form, Rolfe Johnson bringing an air of intimate seductiveness to Byron's Maid of Athens.”
