Arensky & Taneyev: Piano Quintets

Arensky:

Piano Quintet in D Major, Op. 51

Taneyev, S:

Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 30

Two chamber masterpieces from nineteenth-century Russia, performed by Piers Lane and the Goldner String Quartet.

Taneyev has been known as the ‘Russian Brahms’ and this epithet is particularly apposite when considering his Piano Quintet in G minor, especially as regards both its instrumental writing and its intellectual passion. Composed in 1911, this massive work bids fair for the accolade of the greatest work in the Russian piano-chamber repertoire before Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet of 1940. Only the extravagance of its technical demands can explain its failure to establish itself in the standard repertoire.

Arensky’s Piano Quintet of 1900 is less monumental and less flamboyant, though not exactly short of fireworks, especially in the piano writing. It is a deeply attractive and enjoyable work—and equally little-known on the concert platform.

“[Taneyev's] Piano Quintet is an expansive work, warmly played here and with the subtle intelligence Taneyev demanded of himself when planning a work...If Taneyev's Quintet is the more impressive, Arensky's is perhaps the more attractive...The piano-writing is deft and delicate, excellently handled by Piers Lane and well balanced with the strings in the recording.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2013

“Lane's light-fingered ascents and rapid scalic plunges are perfectly complemented by the Goldners' feather-light string playing.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas Issue 2013 ****/*****

Stephen Coombs’s ‘Russian Piano Portraits’ series turns its attention to solo piano music by Anton Arensky, one of the more shadowy figures of the Russian pianistic pantheon. Bon viveur extraordinaire, Arensky lived life in Moscow to the full—and to the disgust of colleagues such as Rimsky-Korsakov—but he was also an important teacher whose pupils included Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Glière and Grechaninov. Indeed, it was Arensky, together with Taneyev (successor to Rubinstein as director of the Moscow Conservatory), who shaped a situation in 1880s Moscow which finally allowed the city to rival St Petersburg in terms of its musical culture.

Arensky’s piano pieces have an easy charm and lyrical breadth of melodic invention. They also show rare inventiveness. There is a quality that is both nostalgic and surprising, reassuringly familiar yet unconventional in harmonic and melodic construction. This music has the power to move the emotions, not perhaps in a dramatic or passionate way, but by its rather personal reflective quality.

“Coombs produces a lovely sound, is a powerful virtuoso, and is an elegant stylist. Hyperion has given him superb recorded sound” American Record Guide

“Intimately played and warmly recorded” BBC Music Magazine

“An enchanting and beautifully played recital” Hi-Fi News

Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 32

Piano Trio No. 2 in F minor, Op. 73

Rachmaninov:

Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14

arr. Julius Conus

Leonore Piano Trio: Tim Horton (piano), Benjamin Nabarro (violin) & Gemma Rosefield (cello)

Arensky’s Piano Trios represent a fine example of the Russian romantic piano trio, a form ‘invented’ by Tchaikovsky, Arensky’s close friend and influence.

Piano Trio No 1 is the more popular of the two, dedicated to the cellist Karl Davidoff. Davidoff is regarded as the founder of the Russian school of cello-playing, and Arensky’s dedication accounts for the fact that the cello plays such a prominent role, having most of the principal themes and often seeming to eclipse the violin in importance. Piano Trio No 2 is one composer’s last works, and marks a considerable advance in Arensky’s compositional techniques.

Hyperion is delighted to present the Leonore Piano Trio (Tim Horton, Benjamin Nabarro and Gemma Rosefield, who features as soloist on Hyperion’s Romantic Cello Concerto series Volume 3: Stanford Cello Concertos) in its debut recording.

“here is music for all those who weary of grappling with the complexities of contemporary works to rejoice in an all-Russian fountain of melodic charm...The Leonores play with truly glorious affection and security, and it is hard to imagine playing of a greater empathy.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2014
