Read Presto's complete review of this disc here, and watch Chris O'Reilly's exclusive video-interview with Steven Isserlis here.

Sir Edward Elgar’s sublime Cello Concerto receives an impassioned new performance from Steven Isserlis, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Paavo Järvi. With additional works by Sir William Walton and Gustav Holst, as well as a miniature suite for solo cello by Imogen Holst, this is unquestionably one of the year’s most eagerly awaited releases.

“This mesmerising meditation couldn't be in better hands” BBC Music Magazine, March 2016

“Isserlis’s playing of the solo part in the Elgar evokes an elegy for a lost world, while he captures perfectly the bittersweet languor of the Walton.” Sunday Times, 28th February 2016

“older, wiser and even more convincing [than his first recording of the Elgar]...Isserlis’s cello rages against the dying of the light, sounding angry yet still beautiful, and under Järvi the orchestra is full-bodied but focused.” The Guardian, 3rd March 2016

“So, how much has he re-thought the work during the past 25 years? The answer is not dramatically, but everything evolves a little with time, and there is definitely more musical conviction to the phrasing and general direction in the new recording - giving each movement (and indeed the whole work) a tighter and much more defined structure.” Chris O'Reilly, Presto Classical, 19th February 2016

“With his immaculate technical address and ravishingly songful, mellow tone, Isserlis strikes precisely the right balance between classical strength and private introspection, his contribution as full of radiant spontaneity and tumbling fantasy as one could wish...An unmissable release.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2016

“Isserlis gives a deeply touching account, the sort that restores faith in a too-often-performed work, here reclaimed as the masterpiece that it is, personal and private, yes, but outgoing in a consoling way without negating buoyancy or go-getting...There is universal appeal to this reading, thankfully without the mawkishness or exaggeration that some interpreters impose upon it.” classicalsource.com

“no praise can be too high for Isserlis’s splendid playing, eloquent without being indulgent and technically always in complete command.” MusicWeb International, April 2016

Hyperion’s long series of St Paul’s recordings is graced by an addition dedicated to music for Epiphany, a companion disc to Advent at St Paul’s. In the Christian Church year, Epiphany is the period after Christmas commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the Magi, celebrated on 6 January.

The programme embraces music from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, from Bach to Bingham, and includes many long-established favourites by Wesley, Cornelius, Howells and others.

“Luminous with a sense of goodness and well-being, brightest and best of choral records for the last many months … a distinguished record” Gramophone Magazine

“This series is the richest treasure trove an Anglican musician or English choral buff could hope to find. Texts and notes are an Anglophile’s dream. Sound is stunningly rich and ringing” American Record Guide

“Hurrah for John Scott and St Paul’s, who with this wonderful CD remind all how glorious the Epiphany repertoire is … every piece is approached as if it were the finest thing ever written, and joy is taken in rendering the simple beautiful … let us rejoice at the richness of this programme” Organists Review

“The choral tone is pleasant, the soloists are well chosen, and the recorded balance keeps everything in perspective” Fanfare

“The eclectic and thoughtful repertoire mix make for compelling listening … warmly recommended” Classic FM Magazine

“Fascinatingly diverse anthology … a tonal brightness and rhythmic vitality that sparkle with festive brilliance” BBC Music Magazine

“This sequence, first released a decade ago, of 17 hymns and carols for Epiphany admirably avoids seasonal cliché (these aren’t Christmas carols, after all) and, more than that, offers an intermittent stiffening of sublime polyphonic music by Byrd and Marenzio...Holst’s eight-part Nunc dimittis is particularly invigorating.” Sunday Times, 18th December 2011

This CD launches yet another Hyperion series. This time we are turning our attention to the rich heritage of music sung in the Anglican church, the English hymn, which has never been systematically preserved on disc. The hymns are recorded by the mixed voices of Wells Cathedral Choir under their director, Malcolm Archer, who has made a speciality of the music and is the composer of one of the hymns. This first CD presents 22 familiar hymns from the 20th Century. Composers include Vaughan Williams, John Ireland and Herbert Howells.

“The time spent listening to it has been delightful. Tone, enunciation, resourcefulness of arrangement and accompaniment, all are exemplary” Gramophone Magazine

Alice Coote (mezzo-soprano) & Graham Johnson (piano)

Alice Coote, one of the most distinctive mezzo-sopranos of today, makes her recital debut on Hyperion with pianist Graham Johnson, a stalwart of the label and tireless explorer of vocal repertoire. The Power of Love creates what Johnson describes as a ‘pageant of English song and poetry’. It’s a journey through half a century of song, surveying not just human love but love of nature and even of money. Some of the most touching pieces here involve the loss of love through death, not least Ivor Gurney’s Lights Out and Gustav Holst’s Betelgeuse. There’s serenity, too, in mellifluous settings by Roger Quilter, while high spirits are supplied by Maude Valérie White’s The Spring has come and Warlock’s sardonic Queen Anne, which includes the immortal lines ‘I am Queen Anne, of whom ’tis said / I’m chiefly fam’d for being dead’.

“From start to finish, the artistry of Alice Coote and Graham Johnson is of the highest order.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

“Almost every track on the mezzo’s recital springs a surprise” Financial Times, 11th February 2012

“['Love's Philosophy'] needs and receives a bolder and stronger delivery than its neighbour, rising to a showy conclusion. It allows Coote to introduce an almost operatic approach as her voice peals forth...the Holst songs, mesmerizingly captured by Coote, whose voice seems almost detached as she intones 'Betelgeuse', recorded, like the rest of the programme, in clear sound.” International Record Review, February 2012

“[Victorian parlour repertoire] proves both admirably suited to her distinctively creamy yet expressive voice, and occasionally revelatory...The well-structured programme concludes with Holst's late Humbert Wolfe settings, in which Coote finds surprising power. Journey's End is tragically bleak” BBC Music Magazine, April 2012 *****
