Palestrina: Lamentation III (Book III)

Palestrina: Lamentation III (Book III)

“Among the many other things for which the independent record company Hyperion deserves our gratitude is its long-standing engagement of Westminster Catherdral Choir, England’s finest Catholic choir, to record the masterpieces of sacred polyphony … Palestrina’s third of his four settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah is marked by sinuous vocal lines, harmonic richness, unpredictable modality and telling passages of homophonic writing … Martin Baker rightly emphasises the classical perfection of Palestrina’s polyphony … as usual, Hyperion’s engineers have worked miracles with the difficult acoustics of Westminster Cathedral. Jon Dixon contributes a first-rate booklet essay, which helpfully situates the performance of Lamentations within the complex rituals of Holy Week celebrations” International Record Review

“Everything about this disc, from the captivating sound to the sleeve notes, is of the highest quality. A must for choral fans” Classic FM Magazine

“very beautifully sung at Westminster Cathedral and superbly recorded...the trebles rise up into the heavens ecstatically. A memorable disc indeed, showing Palestrina at his most inspirational.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition

The Brabant Ensemble, Stephen Rice

The Brabant Ensemble, better known for uncovering works by forgotten composers such as Dominique de Phinot, turns to a giant of the Renaissance—perhaps the most celebrated name of the period. Yet within Palestrina’s huge output there are many hidden gems, lacking both recordings and modern performing editions, and it is from among these that the ensemble’s director Stephen Rice has chosen the repertoire for this album. A Mass—Missa Ad coenam Agni, from Palestrina’s first book of Mass-settings—is included, plus antiphons, motets and five Eastertide Offertories. Each work is, as Stephen Rice states in his typically informative booklet notes, ‘a finely crafted addition to the liturgy’.

The Brabant Ensemble brings a matchless blend of musicianship, scholarship and sensitive singing to this glorious music.

“This disc might be renamed 100 Ways to Sing Alleluia, such is the celebratory nature of this collection of Eastertide offertories, antiphons and motets...The spirited Surrexit pastor bonus, its accompanying antiphon Regina caeli and the gradual Haec dies are sung with a full-voiced, beefy intensity that lifts the music away from mere polite polyphony and gives it a really exciting energy” The Observer, 31st March 2013

“[in the Regina coeli] the singers enliven the texture with their nuanced renderings of the marvellous contrapuntal connections, and the recording make the most of the double-choir effects in the final section.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 ****

The music of the sixteenth-century composer Palestrina is still today at the heart of many of the Roman Catholic services sung all around the world. The congregation at Westminster Cathedral is particularly fortunate to hear on a regular basis this inspirational music sung by one of the finest choirs in the world, and this album focuses on music for Whitsuntide.

(Whit Sunday commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of flames to the Apostles, as recorded in the New Testament.)

This is glorious music and for it Martin Baker has drawn the best from his glorious choir.

“Here [Martin Baker] reinforces his reputation and that of the choir in energetic accounts of music by Palestrina celebrating Pentecost” The Guardian

“The renowned choir are on top form as they respond to Palestrina’s majesty … highly recommended” Gramophone Magazine

“Purposeful performances by a choir for whom this music is a staple diet, and whose slightly edgy, “continental” treble sound is ideally suited to it” Daily Telegraph

“This is a thoughtful, carefully analysed performance—Baker and the Westminster choir communicate a clear sense of the structural logic … the singers are excellent … virtually flawless … shut your eyes and you can almost smell the incense. Very warmly recommended” BBC Music Magazine

Tribulationes civitatum

Missa Ecce Ego Johannes

Magnificat quarti toni

“For sheer beauty of sound, this recording is unsurpassed.
The choice of a programme of music by Palestrina, the one composer ever to have been honoured by official ecclesiastical recognition, was inspired. This CD represents several high points of solemn liturgy; a six-part polyphonic Mass, Ecce ego Johannes, and two groups of motets, including a festal psalm, two penitential pieces, antiphons for the feasts of St Peter and St Cecilia and a solemn alternatimMagnificat. What's very admirable about the whole performance is the excellent integration of the choir. Ivan Moody underlines in his notes Palestrina's skill in the seamless interweaving of homophony and flowing counterpoint; the choir, in its turn, moves from one to the other with the utmost ease and art. In particular, the give-and-take of dovetailing produces a perfect balance.
In this respect, top praise for the trebles, with a firm, mature tone and assured flexibility.”

Still thought of today as the grand master of the polyphonic style, Palestrina was highly regarded and much published in his lifetime. His output comprises one hundred and four firmly attributed Masses, over three hundred and seventy-five motets, sixty-eight offertories, at least sixty-five hymns, thirty-five Magnificats, four (possibly five) sets of Lamentations, and over a hundred and forty madrigals.

The six-voice Missa Ecce ego Johannes presented here is based on an unknown model. The text ‘Ecce ego Johannes’, from the Book of Revelation, is used for the chapter (capitulum) at Vespers on All Saints’ Day, and it appears elsewhere (in the Sarum books, for example) as an antiphon at Matins for the same feast. The character of Palestrina’s setting, however, suggests that it might well have been based on a polyphonic model. It is a powerful, confident work on a par with the Missa Papae Marcelli and Assumpta est Maria—just listen to the very first notes of the Kyrie.

The motets that accompany the Mass show a more festive side to Palestrina, with exuberant melismatic writing. All of these pieces deserve to be better known and there can be no choir better equipped to show the world the beauty of this music.

“Even among the Westminster Cathedral Choir’s superb records this disc stands out. Perfect chording and ensemble, natural and musical phrasing, spot-on intonation and a glorious tonal blend, make this issue one to treasure” Penguin Guide

“Yet another superb disc from Westminster Cathedral … many consider not only the finest cathedral choir in Britain, but one of the best in the world. The sound is quite glorious” Goldberg

“For sheer beauty of sound this recording is unsurpassed” Gramophone Magazine
