Victoria: De Beata Maria Virgine & Surge propera

Palestrina:

Surge, propera amica mea, et veni

Victoria:

Salve Regina a 5

Missa De Beata Maria Virgine

Missa Surge Propera

Following the success of the Westminster Cathedral Lay Clerks in their sumptuous men-only recording of Victoria’s Missa Gaudeamus, the choir returns to full ranks for a further issue in their survey of the Masses of this undisputed Master of the Renaissance.

This new recording opens with Victoria’s five-part setting of the Marian antiphon Salve regina, followed by two of the composer’s Masses: Missa De Beata Maria Virgine and Missa Surge propera, which is preceded by its Palestrina model.

Released to mark the conclusion of a highly successful American tour, this album finds the choir in superb voice and the thrillingly involved sound is perfectly coloured by the Westminster resonance.

“They are nearly 30 strong and go for a particular type of effect - full-bodied, monumental, and replete with the best type of churchy, echoey sound, designed to transfigure a large building.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ***

“a few moments of unruliness apart, the performances of both the masses here are thoughtful and beautifully shaped, and neither the plainchant-based Missa de Beata Maria Virgine nor the parody mass Missa Surge Propera, based upon a Palestrina motet, has been recorded many times before.” The Guardian, 1st December 2011 ***

“Martin Baker has a lovely way with the musical phrases, letting them emerge from the dark recesses of the cathedral...It creates a sense of great timelessness and awesome splendour which does the music far greater service than something more focused on specific details...generally Baker's tempos are sufficiently measured to avoid too much being cast into the acoustic melting pot at the same time.” International Record Review, November 2011

“The Choir of Westminster Cathedral is on good form here...[the recording] distances the choir to such an extent that details are sometimes lost, and the lush vibrato of some lower voices (the basses in particular) adds a further halo of imprecision. Those who prefer to view the High Renaissance through this particular prism will not be disappointed; but those for whom Victoria is a passionate animal...may have wished for soemthing more focused.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012

“Each syllable and inflection has been obviously been painstakingly prepared; the complex 'Gloria' of the Missa Surge propera is as streamlined and faultless a rendering as one could hope to hear. But there's a chilly churchy reserve about a performance that herds everything towwards the emotional central reservation...but of course, there are many listeners for whom those criticisms are in fact positives.” Classic FM Magazine, February 2012 ***

Missa Ave Maris Stella

O quam gloriosum, motet

Missa O quam gloriosum

“This is likely to become one of your most cherished discs. It's notable for its spacious depth of sound, volatile unpredictability of interpretation, and above all the soaring sostenuto of the boy trebles, with their forward and slightly nasal tone quality.
With their magnificently controlled legato lines, the Westminster boys treat Victoria's music as though it were some vast plainchant, with a passion that excites and uplifts. The choir is recorded in the exceptionally resonant Westminster Cathedral, at a distance and with great atmosphere.
Ave maris stella isn't one of Victoria's familiar Masses, quite simply because no music publisher has made it available to choirs in a good, cheap edition. To have it rescued from obscurity is laudable in itself, but to have it sung with such poise and sensitivity is an unexpected double treat.
Unlike O quam gloriosum, this is a work that thrills with echoes of Victoria's Spanish upbringing, of Morales and his predecessors, even of Josquin Desprez, whose own Ave maris stella Mass was brought to the cathedrals of the Iberian peninsula earlier in the century. The plainchant melody, familiar through Monteverdi's setting in the 1610 Vespers, completely dominates Victoria's music, for it's placed most often in huge treble lines that wheel high above the general texture. Magnificent as the early parts of the work are, nothing quite matches the final five-part Agnus Dei, sung here with admirable support and exquisitely shaped by David Hill. Recommended without reservation.”

Westminster Cathedral Choir, James O’Donnell

Tomás Luis de Victoria was the greatest composer of the Spanish sixteenth-century ‘golden age’ of polyphonic music. This recording is of the six-voice Missa Dum complerentur, the five-part motet on which the Mass is based, and six further hymns and sequences including the great Popule meus, a setting of the Improperia (Reproaches) which form the heart of the liturgy for Good Friday.

This is music of compelling beauty, which illustrates well Victoria’s extraordinary capacity to create through simple homophony extremely moving music of great expressiveness.

“If your opportunity of hearing a first-rate choir sing this music in its liturgical context is limited, then listening to these splendid performances is the next best thing, and this is certainly a disc to treasure. It would be worth it for the soaring ‘Amens’ of the Credo alone!” Organists Review

“The greatest Spanish Renaissance composer is in the blood of this splendid choir—it’s hard to imagine any group doing him greater justice. A very welcome addition to the catalogue” Classic CD

“Once again, this is a superb and compelling disc that adds to our knowledge and appreciation of Victoria’s art” Gramophone Magazine

Westminster Cathedral Lay Clerks, Matthew Martin

A new recording from Westminster Cathedral features the gentlemen of their choir in a fascinating programme which brings to life the musical and liturgical traditions of this foundation.

This recording by the lay clerks of Westminster Cathedral presents a full choral, and instrumental, celebration of Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which falls on 15 August. It is based on music by two major composers, Tomás Luis de Victoria and Girolamo Frescobaldi. Victoria’s Missa Gaudeamus provides the central feature of an elaborate liturgical sequence in which other music—including motets by Victoria, Mass Propers and other passages of chant, and organ music by Frescobaldi in several forms—is interpolated between the movements of the Mass Ordinary. This festive celebration of Mass is intended not as a reconstruction of a known occasion in the early seventeenth century, but as a sort of musical offering that illustrates the complex liturgical structures becoming available in a period when the resources for the enrichment of the liturgy were growing steadily.

“New recordings of Tomas Luis de Victoria's intensely beautiful mass settings, the musical peak of the Spanish Renaissance, come along frequently enough. This latest, recorded in Westminster cathedral, places one of them...It makes a compelling whole, sung with rapt purity by the male voices of Westminster Cathedral choir.” The Guardian, 26th June 2009 ****

“This offers satisfying musical variety, sung with smooth elegance by the Lay Clerks of Westminster cathedral...the Gloria, Benedictus and Agnus Dei of the Mass itself do full justice to Victoria's sublime, seamlessly flowing polyphony.” The Observer, 19th July 2009

“A stunning disc that will become the new benchmark in this repertoire. Westminster Cathedral's 19 Lay Clerks give a beautifully paced rendition of Victoria's rarely performed… Missa Gaudeamus. Organ and choir come together in the final Recercar: Sancta Maria by Frescobaldi. The choral blend is - as might be expected - superb and exquisitely balanced. The countertenors soar to amazing heights without the slightest hint of strain.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009

“An elaborate musical mosaic, the appeal of which owes much to the atmospheric depths of the Westminster acoustic, beautifully captured on this recording” Financial Times

“Close-up, full-throated and passionate” International Record Review

“The male voices of Westminster Cathedral choir sing with a purity that emphasises every ounce of this beauty, while Hyperion’s sound captures the atmosphere of the Cathedral without ever losing focus.” Chris O'Reilly, Presto Classical, 6th July 2009
