The Romantic Piano Concerto 65 - Albéniz & Granados

The Romantic Piano Concerto 65 - Albéniz & Granados

Albéniz:

Piano Concerto No. 1 (Concerto fantastico), Op. 78

orchestrated with Tomás Bretón

Spanish Rhapsody, Op. 70

Granados:

Piano Concerto in C minor 'Patético'

adapted & reconstructed for piano and orchestra by Melani Mestre

Volume 65 (have you got them all?) of Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series journeys to Spain and the heart-on-sleeve world there to be found. The Albéniz Concierto fantástico owes much to Schumann and Chopin, albeit with an added drizzle of the Iberian peninsula; the perennially popular Rapsodia española, on the other hand, throws all such classical models to the wind.

Granados never actually got round to writing his piano concerto, so our pianist here—Hyperion debutant Melani Mestre—has done it for him. And it’s a romp. The first movement is pretty much ‘echt’, from Granados’ sketches for a putative piano concerto, but thereafter it’s a hugely enjoyable what-if …

“The ebullience of [the Rapsodia española] is infectious in the playing of Melani Mestre, who has also done the speculative reconstruction of Granados’s C minor Concerto...A sombre start, underlining Granados’s adjective patético, has the stamp of originality and its romantic sweep breathes Spanish air.” The Telegraph, 10th May 2015 *****

“The chief interest lies in the Granados, solemn and declamatory in the first movement before leaving its C minor sense of elegy to recall two earlier 'Spanish Dances' and the composer's one unabashed showpiece, the 'Allegro de concierto'. Musical adventure could hardly go further. Impeccably recorded, all the performances by Melani Mestre and the BBC Scottish Orchestra [sic] under Martyn Brabbins are of an unfaltering fluency and stylistic command.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2015

“Mestre plays [the Granados] with flair and the conviction of an evangelist, and is beguiling in the central allegretto. If neither of these works is a “great” piano concerto, both fall attractively within the rubric of Hyperion’s successful Romantic Piano Concertos series, of which this is a remarkable 65th volume.” Sunday Times, 19th July 2015

“Mestre's playing is limpid and convincing, with Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Symphony Orchestra giving discreet support.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2015

The Romantic Piano Concerto 42 - Alnæs & Sinding

The Romantic Piano Concerto 42 - Alnæs & Sinding

Alnaes:

Piano Concerto in D major, Op. 27

Sinding:

Piano Concerto in D flat major, Op. 6

“…these artists make the best possible case for these rarely heard pieces.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2007 ****

“For the 42nd issue in its 'Romantic Piano Concerto' series, Hyperion turns for inspiration to Norway and, in a first recording of Eyvind Alnæs's Concerto, they light up the sky like an aurora borealis. Here is music very much for those in love with the most succulent romanticism, with lush, lavishly decorated melodies and a fin-de-siècle array of props. The opening Allegromoderato follows one sumptuous gesture with another and in the central Lento the pianist weaves starry figuration around the orchestra's full-blooded outcry. In the finale all fashionable gloom is cast aside for a rollicking waltz guaranteed to sweep its dancers off the floor. So for those wishing to venture beyond the Grieg or MacDowell concertos such music is heavensent, particularly when played by Piers Lane with such enviable poetry, fluency and aplomb.
Few pianists could have entered into the romantic spirit more infectiously, though even he is hard-pressed to make a convincing case for Sinding's less heart-warming Concerto. Here, the music remains more effortful than inspired, huffing and puffing its way through one inflated gesture after another. Yet listening to Lane in the finale is to be reminded of playing as to the romantic manner born. Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic are a perfect foil for their scintillating and indefatigable soloist, and Hyperion's sound balance is impeccable.”

The Romantic Violin Concerto 7 - Arensky & Taneyev

The Romantic Violin Concerto 7 - Arensky & Taneyev

Arensky:

Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 54

Taneyev, S:

Suite de Concert Op. 28

This disc juxtaposes two significant Russian works for violin and orchestra, each written by a composer with a close relationship to Tchaikovsky, and each dedicated to the great violinist and pedagogue Leopold Auer. These two concertos are both formidable display pieces, designed to show off Auer’s transcendental technique. Ilya Gringolts, acclaimed as one of the great violin virtuosos of today and lauded for his debut recording on Hyperion, dazzles in this repertoire, ably supported by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Ilan Volkov. Arensky’s Violin Concerto is a original single-movement work, cast in contrasting sections. It is a model of the flowering of Russian romantic nationalism: Tchaikovsky’s influence on his friend is pleasingly evident, as is Arensky’s gift for melody and delightful contrasts of musical character. Taneyev’s much larger Suite de concert is a synthesis of different styles: it looks back to the Baroque suite with its different dance movements, the Märchen movement suggesting the high Romanticism of Schumann and the Theme and Variations a homage to Tchaikovsky. Particularly striking is the finale: an energetic and vivacious Tarantella, almost relentless in its onrushing rhythm. As the finale proceeds the dance becomes more frenetic, driving to a viscerally exciting conclusion that must have brought the house down in live performances.

“Gringolts came to attention when he won the Paganini prize ten years ago, His fluency, virtuosity and lyrical intensity have been much and rightly admired and this record… is his best yet. He is expertly and sensitively partnered by Ilan Volkov and the BBC Scottish Orchestra.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2009 *****

“Arensky's Concerto is a continuous, four-in one, 20-minute movement, Mendelssohnian in style, elegantly turned at every stage, and with a relatively undemanding solo part that would be perfect for students looking for something other than Bruch to limber up on. Taneyev's Suite is far more ambitious, not to say hybrid in form, encompassing a neo-Baroque Prelude and Gavotte, a Schumannesque 'folktale', a Theme with seven variations and coda, and a final Tarantella, all in a 40-minute structure that needs a soloist of outstanding technical command and expressive range.
Ilya Gringolts is fine advocate for both works, combining brilliance and idiomatic sensitivity, and enjoying fine support from Volkov and the BBC Scottish. In short, another superbly conceived and truthfully recorded addition to Hyperion's 'Romantic Violin Concerto' series.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“The concerto's second theme is an adorable idea that is both touching and difficult to dislodge from one's memory. Ilya Gringolts plays it with disarming elegance and warmth, yet elsewhere he offers effortless brilliance and is expertly and sensitively partnered by Ilan Volkov and the Scottish Orchestra.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition
