Colin Tilney (harpsichord)

William Byrd (c. 1543 – 1623) was considered by his contemporaries to be a musician without peer. The music he wrote for voices to sing is generally recognized as his chief glory. While there are no transcriptions of chansons or song intabulations among his instrumental works, every moving line in one of his fantasies or pavans is in essence a wordless voice, having different registers and needing breath. Presented here by acclaimed harpsichordist Colin Tilney is a delectable assortment of keyboard works highlighting the vocal character of Byrd’s writing including his exquisite setting of John Dowland’s famed Pavan "Lachrymae".

Ravel: Miroirs, Gaspard De La Nuit & Pavane

Ravel: Miroirs, Gaspard De La Nuit & Pavane

Ravel:

Miroirs, 5 pieces for piano

Gaspard de la Nuit

Pavane pour une infante défunte

Garlo Grante (piano)

When pianists think of Gaspard de la nuit, their hearts stop. Ravel’s masterpiece, as famous for its depiction of Aloysius Bertrand’s dark, hallucinatory poems as it is infamous for its stunning virtuosity. The title Miroirs (Mirrors) suggests the reflections of things or objects. In this case the reflections that we see are those of night moths, birds, a boat on the ocean, a Spanish song with imitation of guitars and the sounding of bells in a valley. These pieces create an intense atmosphere and the mood each piece sets evokes the exact images that each title suggests. Carlo Grante’s masterful artistry vividly brings to life Ravel’s highly imagistic and structured music.

Lamento sopra la dolorosa perdita della Real Maestà di Ferdinando IV Rè de Romani

Colin Tilney (harpsichord)

“People loved him because of his good nature, even if they did not understand his art.” Thus wrote Sibylla, Duchess of Württemberg, Froberger’s last patron and his “humble forsaken pupil”. She places a finger squarely on two fundamental aspects of Froberger’s life: his modest and unostentatious character and the extreme subtlety of his music. A pupil of Frescobaldi and exponent of Couperin, Froberger’s complete works remained unpublished until 1897 and it is only in the last half-century that more and more keyboard players have started to feel the persuasion of his secret and inward music.

The present recording explores some of the music in the earliest of the three surviving Froberger autographs housed in the Austrian National Library, the Libro Secondo of 1649.

Colin Tilney is internationally known for his harpsichord, clavichord and fortepiano playing, with many solo recordings on DG (Archive), EMI Electrola, Decca, Hyperion, Dorian, etc. For Music &Arts he earlier recorded Bach’s English Suites on an antique Italian harpsichord, the French Suites on clavichord, an album of fugues by Bach and his forerunners, and a Scarlatti disc.

“Poised, thoughtful and persuasive.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2014 ****

The selections on this recording come from a substantial body of work created by composers who left Europe for the United States during the 1930’s. Four of the exiles featured here were Austrian – Schönberg, Toch, Korngold and Zeisl and the remaining one, Castelnuovo-Tedesco was Italian. Along with over 30,000 other European intellectuals and artists, all came to settle in Los Angeles area when, for a time, Southern California was transformed into one of the cultural capitals of the world.

Wagner: Die Walkure: Act 2

Wagner: Die Walkure: Act 2

(abridged version - cuts in the Wotan/Fricka scene, Todesverkündigung and Wotan's monologue)

Kirsten Flagstad (Brünnhilde), Friedrich Schorr (Wotan), Lotte Lehmann (Sieglinde), Kathryn Meisle (Fricka), Lauritz Melchior (Siegmund), Emmanuel List (Hunding)

Orchestra of the San Francisco Opera, Fritz Reiner

With Kirsten Flagstad as Brünnhilde, Lotte Lehmann as Sieglinde, Kathryn Meisle as Fricka, Lauritz Melchior as Siegmund, Emmanuel List as Hunding, Conductor, Fritz Reiner, San Francisco, 13 November, 1936. First released by our predecessor organization, educational Media Associates of America, Inc., in 1976 on LP-426, this recording was subsequently reissued in a restoration by Maggi Payne in 1999 as Music & Arts CD1048, and was newly restored for the present edition in 2013 from recently discovered NBC transcription discs by Ward Marston and Aaron Z. Snyder.

William Youngren wrote of the previous CD issue in Fanfare magazine: ”Reiner conducts with verve; Flagstad is splendid throughout; Lehmann is in good form, but occasionally overacts; Meisle is powerful and convincing; Schorr sings well but sounds old and fluffs a few notes; Melchior is superb - he and Flagstad make the Todesverkündigung scene alone worth the price of the disc.“

“this 1936 live broadcast is still thrilling, with Reiner’s eloquent conducting and a cast to dream of: Friedrich Schorr’s dark, incisive Wotan, Lauritz Melchior’s Siegmund and Lotte Lehmann’s never-equalled Sieglinde.” Sunday Times, 26th May 2013
