Beethoven: Complete Symphonies & Selected Overtures

Beethoven: Complete Symphonies & Selected Overtures

From the legendary Oct-Dec 1939 cycle: new 2013 digital transfers

Beethoven:

Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (complete)

Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72b

Leonore Overture No. 2, Op. 72a

Egmont Overture, Op. 84

By 1939, after more than half a century on the podium and more than four decades conducting Beethoven, Toscanini’s approach to interpreting the canon could hardly have avoided extensive change and development. Precisely how he performed the symphonies early in the century is inevitably to some degree a matter of speculation, since no recordings survive from the first half of his career. This fine release can of course be judge and throughout the years this 1939 cycle recorded between October and December has been described as ‘legendary’.

“a remarkable testament to Toscanini” MusicWeb International

“The greatest Beethoven cycle around”” classicalsource.com

“Toscanini conducts the NBC Symphony Orchestra in this set from 1939 which for many is still the benchmark when it comes to conducting and performing Beethoven. Movements such as the last movement of the Second and the Scherzo of the Fifth are full of fire and riveting momentum. Considering the age of the set, the recorded sound is quite stunning.” James Longstaffe, Presto Classical

Reissuing one of Music and Arts’ best-selling discs: these are the best World War II performances of Beethoven’s symphonies under the baton of Furtwängler.

Previously released versions on our label were acclaimed in Fanfare, American Record Guide, Pulse!, Absolute Sound, Diapason, Musica, and numerous other journals. Symphony No. 9 has been completely re-mastered for this edition.

“Separating these performances from the circumstances in which they took place may be impossible – the booklet includes a photographs of Furtwängler conducting in Berlin, with Hitler and Goebbels sitting in the front row – but there is some remarkable music-making here, especially the surging, majestic Eroica, the exaggeratedly romantic Fourth and the furious, frantic Ninth” The Guardian, 28th March 2013 ****

Camilla Wicks (violin)

Upheld by many as a queen amongst her peers, violinist Camilla Wicks led a stellar career in the dozen years following World War II. At the peak of her fame she retired from the concert stage to devote herself to her family. Upon resuming her career she remained an outstanding if intermittent performer for several more decades. Wicks made few commercial recordings besides a famed 1952 performance of the Sibelius Concerto. Now this precious set, spanning five decades and a vast range of repertoire, offers the most comprehensive collection of her concert performances ever likely to be assembled. It offers an in-depth insight into Wicks’ evolution from captivating, devil-may-care young virtuoso to profound interpreter. Music & Arts is pleased to make these great performances available for those who have long wished for Wicks’ discography to be expanded, and to enable a wider audience to be stirred by this extraordinary violinist and artist.
