Barbirolli conducted the New York Philharmonic from 1936 to 1943 and returned to New York in 1959 to conduct the orchestra in a series of concerts featuring English repertoire rarely heard by Americans. Here are the best performances of Sir John’s visit, previously unissued, in state-of-the-art digital restorations. Includes “Dream of Gerontius” with Richard Lewis, a very fine Gerontius.

“[Gerontius] anticipates the superlative studio recording Barbirolli and Lewis made together with Janet Baker five years later, though Maureen Forrester is a more than capable Angel here and the baritone, Morley Meredith, is arguably superior to his later equivalent...The mono sound is patchy but just about serviceable, but Barbirolli fans won't worry about that.” The Guardian, 23rd September 2010 ***

One gets a fair semblance of Arrau's artistry through a remarkable cache of recordings made for German Radio in 1937 and 1938. They are released here for the first time, with the exception of the Liszt E Flat concerto, which appeared on a long unavailable Russian Melodya LP and two rare commercially issued Parlophone 78s, added as encores. While Arrau made several important recordings prior to his emigration from Germany, his pre-war discography is small in comparison to his prolific output from the mid-forties on, when the pianist's international reputation solidified. The present compilation, therefore, adds significantly to what we know of Arrau's prime years.

Glenn Gould (piano)

This set documents Glenn Gould the concert pianist in unprecedented depth. The recordings range in date from 1951, when Gould was just eighteen years old, to 1960, a few years before he gave up concert life for good. They include all of the genres in which he performed live—solo works, songs, chamber music, concertos. And they cover almost the whole range of his repertoire: the earliest work represented here, by Bach, dates from the early eighteenth century; the latest, by Ernst Krenek (who befriended Gould, and outlived him), was composed in 1943. In between are composers who were central to the young Gould’s repertoire: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schoenberg, and Webern. Included here are some of his warhorses but also several works of which he never made an authorized studio recording or broadcast, as well as a few interpretations that differ significantly from those in his official releases.

All-American Youth Orchestra

Stokowski formed the All-American Youth Orchestra in 1940, its players' ages ranging from 18 to 25. He sought to combat Nazi propaganda touting the wonders of Hitler youth with an artistic statement from young emissaries of the free world. The AAYO toured South America in 1940 and North America in 1941 and was met with rave reviews. These performances boast a unique combination of past and future: the wisdom of Stokowski's vast experience allied with the pure, undiminished idealism of youth. In 1945, Stokowski founded the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra. The items included here, the only ones that had not been re-circulated on commercial CDs until now, are all brief, and for the most part within a range of varying degrees of lightness in content. Beautifully restored by Mark Obert-Thorn.
