Stokowski conducts Shostakovich

Stokowski conducts Shostakovich

Shostakovich:

Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47

20 April 1939 (first western recording)

Philadelphia Orchestra

Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 54

8/20 December 1940 (world premiere recording)

Philadelphia Orchestra

Symphony No. 7 in C major, Op. 60 'Leningrad'

13 December 1942

NBC Symphony Orchestra

The recordings contained in this set of Shostakovich's Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Symphonies were all made soon after the first performances of each work, and have an authenticity as well as a musical immediacy that later recordings inevitably have lacked, good as they may be. These recordings stand as unique sound documents in the history of the interpretation of Shostakovich's music. In addition they testify to Stokowski's own personal style as an interpreter of this composer's works. Shostakovich held Stokowski in high esteem as an exponent of his music. These performances were previously issued on other labels (no longer available); the present restorations are state of the art, from the best possible sources.

“In Shostakovich, Stokowski cultivates an uncommon strain of seductive lyricism. Excitement in the Fifth and Sixth is limited by timid timpani playing, while in the Seventh the sound is constricted.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2009

Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

20th November 1952

Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski

It was Fritz Reiner who once said that Leopold Stokowski was "the man who invented high fidelity" and it is certainly true that of all the great 20th-century conductors, Stokowski was unique in his fascination with recorded sound and his intense interest in the technical methods used to obtain the finest results. Two examples of his early stereo recordings appear here, both first releases, from stereo tapes made by pioneering American recording engineer Bert Whyte. The Smetana filler had only appeared as a mono recording on the Mercury label; the clarity and dynamic range of this stereo version are stupendous!

Mahler: Symphony No. 8 in E flat major 'Symphony of a Thousand'

Mahler: Symphony No. 8 in E flat major 'Symphony of a Thousand'

recorded April 1950

Frances Yeend, Uta Graf, Camilla Williams (sopranos), Martha Lipton, Louise Bernhardt (mezzos), Eugene Conley (tenor), Carlos Alexander, George London (bass)

New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Westminster Choir, Schola Cantorum and the Boys' Choir from P.S., Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski

Stokowski gave the U.S. premiere of the work and was a renowned exponent of Mahler's music. On its initial release, Kevin Conklin wrote of this recording in Stereophile: "this is the most consistently satisfactory performance of the Mahler Eighth I know, and a powerful argument for preferring a live recording of the work. It deserves to be known as widely as the famous Bruno Walter/Kathleen Ferrier Das Lied von der Erde of about the same vintage."
