Smetana Trio

New CD from BBC Music Magazine Award Winning Smetana Trio.

Following on from the recording of the complete trios of Antonin Dvořak (Supraphon), the renowned and critically acclaimed Smetana Trio have taken the logical step of recording a Johannes Brahms album of the same ilk. As a pianist, Brahms earned admiration back in his childhood and later on many occasions even premiered his own pieces. Almost four decades span the first trio Brahms wrote, at the age of twenty, and the last. Besides piano trios in the traditional configuration, he composed a trio for horn and a trio for clarinet. The sound of the horn, an instrument Brahms himself played, was reputedly loved by the composer’s mother and he wrote the horn trio as a response to her death. Brahms created the clarinet trio for the celebrated clarinettist Richard Muhlfeld, whom the composer esteemed immensely.

The Smetana Trio’s guests on the new recording are the outstanding clarinettist Ludmila Peterkova and the superlative horn player Přemysl Vojta, winner of the ARD Munich competition (2010) and holder of a Beethoven Ring. Brahms with the tenderness and engrossing romantic expressiveness of the Smetana Trio.

Recorded at the Martinek Studio, Prague, June 2011 (Trios Nos 2&3, Clarinet Trio) and June 2012 (Trio No. 1, Horn Trio).

“Overall, these musicians have an especially strong and fine sense of line. The Horn Trio is full of echt-Romantic vistas and half-lights...The Clarinet Trio is a revelation: not at all the austere, reserved piece it often seems, but deeply poetic and full of late autumnal colours.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ****

“What the Smetana may lack in polish they make up for in exciting raw edged playing. This rather sets them apart from other ensembles.” MusicWeb International, April 2013

“there is spontaneous engagement with the music and such a heroic sweep to the playing...(Peterkova's clarinet playing in the Op. 114 Trio is absolutely magical)...The Smetana Trio is thus at or near the top of my short-list of relatively recent recordings of these glorious works.” International Record Review, May 2013

Ludmila Peterková (clarinet)

Bennewitz Quartet

Classic FM favourite Ludmila Peterkova’s new CD!

Three compositions that came into being over the period of some 200 years yet have much in common; their creators had a penchant for the clarinet and in these works let the amplitude of their melodic inventions resound to the full. And all three composers were inspired by a superlative clarinettist.

Mozart wrote his quintet for the virtuoso Anton Stadler, Ondřej Kukal composed his catchy Clarinettino for the rising clarinet star Ludmila Peterková, who premiered the piece to great acclaim and now after two decades has returned to it on this recording.

For many of those familiar with some of the other innumerable recordings of the piece, this take on Mozart’s “Stadler” quintet may sound somewhat unusual since Ludmila Peterková has decided to play it on the deeper basset clarinet, an instrument of an enchantingly velvety timbre, for which it was originally written.

When it comes to Rejcha’s quintet, you will immediately realise that it is not included just “to make up the numbers” but is a piece that in its playful inventiveness holds its own even in juxtaposition to Mozart’s perfect equanimity.

A superb partner to the clarinettist is the Bennewitz Quartet, one of the finest continuers of the celebrated Czech quartet tradition, as evidenced by their successes at international competitions (ARD Munich in 2004, 1st prize and gold medal in Osaka, 1st prize at the Premio Paolo Borciani in 2008), as well as the rapturous responses to the concerts they have given on the most prestigious stages throughout Europe, the USA and Japan.

Martinu - Chamber Music for Viola

Martinu - Chamber Music for Viola

Martinu:

Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola (Duo No. 1), H. 313

Duo for Violin and Viola No. 2, H. 331

Sonata for Viola & Piano, H. 355

Musique de Chambre No. 1

Alexander Besa (viola), Bohuslav Matoušek (violin), Petra Besa (piano), Ludmila Peterková (clarinet), Jan Talich (violin), Jirí Bárta (violoncello), Jana Boušková (harp) & Karel Košárek (piano)

While Bohuslav Martinu dedicated himself to the violin and its brilliant tone from the very beginning of his oeuvre, the viola doesn’t appear until his later years, (all of the pieces on this album dating from the period 1947–59). It is as if he found in the viola, with its dark timbres, its ability to be harsh and rhythmic as well as sweet and lyrical, an instrument to express his feelings and sufferings in the last part of his life.

A Mozartian joy and temperament flash through the lyrical moods, nostalgia and “Czech” fervor of the folk-music motives, like reminders of his unbridled youth through memories of the homeland to which he was no longer able to return. The transparent structure of the Three Madrigals and Duet No. 2 gives way to the ardent song of the Sonata for Viola, while in the Chamber Music the viola is just a gossamer strand in the broad color palette of the combinations of all the instruments in the sextet.

Violist Alexander Besa is an excellent soloist, chamber player and orchestral musician (Camerata Bern et al.) with a number of recordings and awards to his name. The album features, without exaggeration, the best Czech musicians of the younger generation.

The lyrical viola, dark and brilliant, joyful and mournful in the later works of Bohuslav Martinu.
