This set of ‘world premiere recordings’, released in the Century year of Messiaen’s birth, is unquestionably the definitive tribute to the talent of Yvonne Loriod. It was for Messiaen’s former student, who became his second wife in 1961, that he composed his great cycles and important piano works. Messiaen once said “I knew they would be played by Yvonne Loriod, I knew I could dream up very difficult things, things quite extraordinary and very new. They would be played and played well” She gave the first performance in March 1945 of the Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus, and in April 1959 of the complete version of Catalogue d’oiseaux.

“Of all the various releases marking Messiaen's centenary, this is one of the most valuable. The central four discs, featuring Yvonne Loriod's first recordings of the two cast cycles Vingt regards sur l'enfant-Jésus and Catalogue d'oiseaux will have devotees going faint with excitement. Loriod and Messiaen's 1962 version of Visions de l'amen... utterly exuberant... The stunning performance of Oiseaux exotiques, the premiere itself, is little short of miraculous...” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 *****

“For those wanting to look deeper into Messiaen's evolution and history, the Accord set of early recordings featuring Messiaen, Loriod and contemporary acolytes is essential. Loriod's 1956 account of the Vingt regards has a thrilling atmosphere of discovery... Boulez's account of the insanely exactly Sept Haïkaï and a joyous performance of Oiseaux exotiques from Rudolf Albert, recorded at Domaine Musical events, enjoy a marvellous sense of time and place. Messiaen's own recording of the Quartet for the End of Time, featuring cellist Etienne Pasquier (with whom he was interred in Stalag VIII-A)... has a rooted emotional authenticity that never tries too heard to make its point.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009
