Giuseppe Verdi’s Luisa Miller is an opera in three acts based on Schiller’s Kabale und Liebe (Intrigue and Love). Just before Christmas 2012, it was recorded at the Malmö Opera, the leading opera house in the expansive region of Öresund in Sweden. Luisa Miller is the story of the lovers Luisa and Rodolfo. Their love is challenged by class distinctions between their families. Despite the couple’s struggle, the story eventually ends in inevitable tragedy.

The Russian opera singer and rising star Olesya Golovneva is breathtaking as Luisa and the Swedish Expressen writes that Luc Robert as Rodolfo “is a gold treasure from Canada. A real tenor!” Conducted by internationally acclaimed Michael Güttler, who works for opera houses and orchestras all over the world, including the Orchestre de Paris and the Wiener Staatsoper, this opera is a ‘must have’.

Blessed with a treasurable musicality, the Russian soprano also possesses the necessary agility...and stamina...Slight of figure, onscreen she looks barely 20...Any admirer of this wonderful opera will want to see and hear Golovneva's enchanting heroine.

The orchestra play well, the recorded sound is great but it is for the singing that this production is worth investing in...[Golovneva] makes her debut as Luisa and she sings radiantly. Her last act aria is heavenly...this DVD is a sure way of falling in love with one of Verdi’s most delectable scores.

Opera Now

The singers aren’t particularly big names but there are two good voices on display. First is Olesya Golovneva as Luisa, her soprano clear and fresh...As her father, Miller, Vladislav Sulimsky’s baritone has a firm core...Michael Güttler conducts with verve and the supporting cast is fine.
