The Malaysian Philharmonc Orchestra under Kees Bakels here present the two symphonies by Russian composer Vassily Kalinnikov.

In his short life Kalinnikov wrote several songs and choral and orchestral works, among which the two symphonies are the crowning glories.

The first symphony enjoyed a particular success even during the composer's lifetime, and is still part of the repertory of many Russian orchestras.

Kalinnikov’s gifts for melody, of a distinctly ‘Russian’ nature, and orchestration are frequently remarked upon, often in comparison to Tchaikovsky, who in fact supported his younger colleague.

Gramophone Magazine

March 2012

“I'm happy to be able to report that Kees Bakels presides over atheletic, shapely and involving performances of both works...there's not a hint of routine about the Dutchman's painstakingly prepared, bright-eyed readings; indeed, the playing of the Malaysian PO has both immaculate finish and engaging spirit to commend it. So, a thoroughly enjoyable coupling, boasting stunningly natural sound and balance.”
