Oliver Triendl (piano), Daniel Gaede (violin), Hariolf Schlichtig (viola) & Peter Bruns (violoncello) Russian born composer Paul Juon is relatively unknown. A contemporary critic has termed this late-romantic composer the missing link between Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. His piano quartet Op.37 featured here on his CPO debut, brings together all the essential traits of his compositional style; a predilection for irregular rhythms, bold harmonies, and an unmistakably Russian folk tone in the melodies. The pianist on both quartets is Oliver Triendl, a regular on CPO. |
