This disc marks the first in a series dedicated to Julius Röntgen’s Piano Concertos. Röntgen’s second piano concerto is clearly obliged to German romanticism and combines the lighter form of a Mendelssohn Concerto with the somewhat weightier form akin to Schumann or Brahms. In contrast, reminiscences of Brahms or Beethoven are hardly heard at all in his fourth piano concerto. Both concertos appear here in their world première recordings.
CPO is proud to present the much sought after and bravura German pianist Matthias Kirschnereit playing alongside the NDR Radiophilharmonie of Hannover under the Dutch conductor David Porcelijn.

“Kirschnereit deserves all the acclaim coming to him these days...The first two phrases of the Second Concerto are enough to announce a player of uncommon discernment, and thereafter he treats every tarnished roulade as a sparkling jewel. The slow movements are not merely euphonious but have almost tangible intimacy. His accompaniments also sound thoroughly attuned to the idiom.”
